With proper instruction, beginning writers compose pieces that demonstrate a deep understanding of the process, strategies, skills, and craft typically displayed by experienced writers. Through this presentation, we will explore developmentally appropriate practices that encourage and allow young students to see themselves as writers, doing what writers do. A writing workshop approach and carefully planned units of study provide an opportunity to meet the needs of our youngest writers and celebrate their growth and achievements as authors.
