lumnious

introduction

The Harrison Path Station is located minutes out of New York City, on a site that is in an up and coming area of New Jersey. Harrison is becoming a node on an almost endless line of public transportation. therfore it seemed fitting that a long span linear structue be the form of the project. in order to create a moment of reverence in the drag of the daily commuter as well as the visiting users, art that had a strong atmospheric presence was examined. with those ideas in mind the simplicity of the form allowed for a unique articulation of masonry and light.

Initially Retail and lobby volumes were places on grade to create commerce and interaction. Above those masses, the volumes that housed the plat form and intermediate levels were placed. To create a gathering area for the train passegers as well as the community the bottom volumes were carved through. Finally the ground plan was manipulated to create a hybrid area for pedestrian gathering and circulation separating it from the street's elevation.

At Ground level the landscape is relatively simple with only a fold that is treated by a variety of conditions. The plaza not only induces public gathering but simultaneously acts as a passage and shortcut through the fabric of Harrison. As you move through the open landscape you are greeted by a sculptural stair that begins your journey. The circulation is an adventure guided by light, it contracts and expands until you reach the platform level and are greeted by an atmosphere of colour and light diffused through louvers and masonry. Creating a moment of reverence and imagination as you look across the city skyline from the platform. platform level plan

Through the use of two simple materials, Brick and glass, this project did more with less. With an economy of means mind-set the brick and glass was used in a way that would produce a multitude of effects as the day progresses.

njit masonry competition The Masonry competition is an annual competition held for the second year Architecture studios of NJIT. In which studios develop a project collectively, in my case it was the previous project, Luminous. Then with the help of professional masons, tried to implement the ideas and notions of their projects into built masonry structures. This is the first time students begin to see the actual implications and regulations a design must undergo in order to be a structurally stable object. while at the same time learning to communicate through drawings with the construction industry

Transferring Loads

Through the use of lintels it allowed the structure to transfer loads than typical load bearing masonry. Instead of loads going straight to the ground, loads a transferred down through the vertical units, then horizontally through the lintels then, back into vertical units and ultimately to the ground. The masonry screen used on Luminous, changed scales and became the spatial structure you seeto the right.

the base of the model allows the design to have a floating effect. this central support holds up the fanning brick masonry louvers fan to create aperatures the horizontality of the lintels offset the vertical units. these also provide for layered seating

experiential layering

introduction

With a site located in an up and coming area of Newark, the challenge was how to create an environment that not only allowed graduate students a home away from school, but also a place that introduced these people to the downtown area in a multitude of ways. In order to do this the project was designed to act as a community at both a macro and micro scale. Creating a community at a city, block, building and ultimately individual floor scale. to reiterate the notion of community the complex is layered with a variety of experiences, all connecting back to the town centre, in the form of courtyards, circulation, views, and units. Thus creating a community that can be separate from its surroundings, yet always interactive with the city at the request of the user.

the form was derived from a very subtractive approach. First taking the site area and extruding it into floor levels. From there new pedestrian streets were created, all leading to a town square. Courtyards were carved out of each mass, creating a connection to the town square. the building heights were adjusted based on the adjacent masses. Then the town square was activated with seating and green space. Finally to maintain public control at street level, as well as visual connection to the town square from the street, the ground floor was setback creating an arcaded condition. Similar to those found in traditional cities.

N eric bieber

Commercial program was placed at street level to create public interaction and engagement, through the use of an open plan and cafe, dining, and retail spaces. As the buildings ascend in height, the spaces become less public. The introduction of lounges and terraces on the residential floors allows for a more intimate level of social interaction. at the same time they are private and ensure the safety of the residents.

The problem typical housing is usually faced with, is that of repeated stories, leading to static, stacked, "pancake" spaces. In order to break this assumed ordering of spaces, and to increase the spatial connectivity. The spaces were cut vertically by either lofted spaces, light wells, atrium spaces, and duplexes. In turn creating a unique spatial experience for the user as they circulate through the masses.

diffusing space

introduction

THROUGH THE USE OF MODERN SPACE MAKING, VERNACULAR CONSTRUCTION AESTHETICS, AND COLORED TEXTILES ; THIS PROJECT CREATES A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE FOR THE CHILDREN. GIVING THEM DIFFUSED COLORED LIGHT IN THE CLASSROOMS BY USE OF LOUVERS, AND BAMBOO CROSS SECTIONS. THE SCHOOL IS SITED NEXT TO A LAKE PROVIDING PASSIVE COOLING AND VENTILATIO THROUGH THE OPEN PLAn. ONE MUST HAVE ACCESS TO THE OPEN SKY TO ACHIEVE TRUE ENLIGHTENMENT AND GROW, INTELECTUALLY,SOCIALY, AND EXPERIENCIALY. IN AN ATTEMPT TO PUSH THOSE IDEALS THE LARGE STRUCTURAL COLUMNS OPEN UP AND BECOME INHABITABLE TO ALLOW FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION AND VIEWS TO THE SKY THE VARIETY OF SPACIAL AND LIGHT CONDITIOND ALLOW FOR A MULTITUDE OF WAYS TO EXPERIENCE THE SPACE.

The large columns serve as objects in space that not only serve as support for the textile structure above but also become place of interaction for student, teachers, and visitors alike. They are made of two different scales of bamboo. The large cross sections act as the structure for the columns. While the smaller cross section pieces are set inside the larger ones acting as a screen, resembling that of a thatch a common material in Indian villages.

introduction

sited in a rich culutural and historical neighborhood of newark, known as the ironbound. the goal of this project was to create a simple yet monumental form that honored the importance of the books in an era where books are becoming obselete, and responds to the context through site placement and materiality. while at the same time creating a unique atmosphere for the users that allowed a close visual and physical connection to the books. the erection of a large book tower in the center allowed for a clear ordering of program and event spaces. this tower simultaneously acted as the heart of the building both figuratively and visually. structure was encased withing the tower to give a notion that books are what hold the building together both functionally and structurally.

ATLANTIC YARDS

introduction

the site is an empty lot in brooklyn that is highly talked about by developers. this proposal is designed to set up a new model for high density housing. showing that a uran redevelopment project of this scale can not only provide high density house and ground level retail, but also give a considerable amount of civic green space back to the community.
