MOODBOARD. FALL 2011 The design strategy for The Café Duran makeover was Redesigning it’s product line and Packaging To better appeal to the new York Coffee market. New Yorkers have sophisticated coffee tastes so I designed a cohesive product line that was sleek and modern, yet stayed true to the lively Panamanian culture.

Using prototype 1 as a digital sketch, I further developed it into Prototype 2. The designs Make a bold and colorful statement that represent the nationalism of Panama. To evoke a rustic aesthetic and texture, I printed on kraft paper The colorful pattern designs called Molas ARE found on the traditional costumes of the Native Indians. Families apart of The Gnoble Bugle Indian tribe have been harvesting the coffee beans of Café Duran since it’s establishment in 1907. When generating the names of each coffee blend, I wanted to pay homage to the roots of the Café Duran Establishment. The names represent the people and geographic regions where the Coffee has been grown, harvested, roasted and packaged for the last 106 years.

Prototype .03a & .03B SPRING 2013 After a year and a half of finishing Prototype 2, I decided my original design makeover needed a makeover. This time I wanted to create a SIMPLER AND MODERN prototype WITH ELEMENTS that made would make the package stand out. Taking a new approach with constructing this prototype, I used a more hands on approach integrating silk screening. Unsure of which color packaging would look better physically, I constructed two versions, one using the natural kraft paper and the other with a matt spray-painted finish.

This Moodboard represents the essence of Jarritos as it already exists with the addition of New design concepts. Seeking to extent its reach to a young and vibrant American audience, the new packaging needed to be as unique, fun and tasteful as the beverage it contained.


LOGO MOCK-UP .01 FALL 2011 In conducting brand research, I came across several iconic figures prominent in Mexican culture. One figure found commonly in Jarritos advertising is that of a masked Mexican wrestler called a luchador. IN the first round of developing a new logo, I used a luchador drinking out of a little jar as a mascot. Jarritos translates TO ‘little jars’ in English so I included one into the luchador design to evoke a sense that Jarritos is a Buff and fierce COMPETITOR.

Continuing the luchador concept, I combined both ideas by drawing a day of the dead inspired luchador mask. Disguised as the iconic skull, the mask IS DETAILED ACCORDINGLY TO THE SODA’S FLAVOR.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION. FALL 2010 The Hipster Voodoo kit is unique because it integrates hand craftsmanship with digital interaction. Although this kit requires each doll to be entirely hand-crafted, mobile video tutorials are provided via QR codes for the user’s convenience. Each QR code included in the instruction manual can be scanned by smart phones to automatically direct users to online video tutorials. Each video tutorial can be found on the Hipster Voodoo Vimeo channel.

LOGOS AND PROTOTYPE 1. FALL 2010 STAYING TRUE TO THE ‘DRAPER TOUCH’ STYLE, THE LOGOS AND PRELIMINARY PACKAGING INFUSED A MODERN-BAROQUE AESTHETIC. MY DESIGN STRATEGY WAS TO MIMIC A DOROTHY DRAPER INTERIOR INTO MY BRAND IMAGE. WANTING MY PACKAGING TO BE CHIC LIKE THAT OF A DRAPER INTERIOR, I INCORPORATED BOLD COLORS, BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES, FLORAL PATTERNS, and GOLD LEAF. For the Logo, I chose the name ‘Felicity’ because it describes a state of intense hapness or bliss and sounds beautifully when pronounced. To match the the name of the line and the packaging, the logo prototypes include flowers AND roccoco/BAROQUE-LIKE FRAMES.

LOOKING AT OLDER POSTERS THAT ADVERTISED THE RELEASE OF THE MOVIE, I FELT THAT THEY DIDN’T REALLY DO THE JUSTICE OF TRANSLATING THE STORY THAT LEAVES AUDIENCES IN AWE. HOWEVER, I USED THE FOUR COLOR-SCHEME USED IN THE POSTER ON THE RIGHT AS A BASIS FOR MY FOUR POSTER SERIES.

KIDS POSTER SERIES. Spring 2013 WHEN CONCEPTUALIZING IDEAS FOR A NEW POSTER, I FELT IT WAS MY DUTY TO DESIGN SOMETHING THAT REALLY CAPTURED THE LIFE OF THE STORY. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE POSTER DESIGNS HAD TO MEASURE UP TO OR ENHANCE THE MOVIE’S LONG AND ACCLAIMED REPUTATION. TO BETTER GRASP A BIGGER IMAGE OF WHAT THE MOVIE ENTAILED, I CAPTURED SCREEN STILLS OF THE MOVIE’S MOST SIGNIFICANT SCENES TO COMPOSE SEAMLESS COLLEAGUES.

KIDS POSTER 2. Spring 2013 Being that kids was released in 1995, I designed the graphics with a bitmap/VHS static feel to imitate the 90’s film aesthetic. WHEN CONSIDERING THE PRESENTATION OF THE FOUR POSTERS TOGETHER, I PRINTED THEM ACCORDINGLY TO THE COLOR ORDER OF THE FOUR-COLOR SCHEME USED IN ONE OF THE ORIGINAL KIDS POSTER. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, THE COLOR ORDER IS RED, BLUE, GREEN YELLOW. WHEN VIEWING THE SERIES AS A WHOLE, I ALTERNATED THE POSTER GRAPHICS WHILE IMPLEMENTING THE FOUR-COLOR ORDER.

DIGITAL GRAPHIC. Spring 2013 Nick vonWerssowetz, aka lurknyc, IS A well-known SKATE FILMER BASED IN NEW YORK CITY. THE STYLE OF HIS VIDEOS ARE BASED ON the Urban 90’S HIP-HOP AESTHETIC. TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF RAW SKATING FOOTAGE, NICK AND I DECIDED TO USE SCREEN STILLS FROM HIS MASTER TAPE TO PROMOTE HIS FILM. SIMPLY DESIGNED, THE POSTER GRAPHIC IS COMPRISED OF 2 COLOR IMAGES COMBINED.

PRINTING A COLOR IMAGE REQUIRES IT TO BE PRINTED AS A FOUR-COLOR PROCESS. IN DESIGNER TERMS, THIS MEANS MANUALLY PRINTING AN IMAGE IN CMYK, SIMILAR TO THAT OF A LASER PRINTER WHEN PRINTED DIGITALLY. SURPRISINGLY, A SILK SCREENED IMAGE WITH MANY DIFFERENT COLORS AND TONES IS ONLY MADE USING FOUR COLORS; CYAN (C), MAGENTA (M), YELLOW (Y) AND BLACK( K). THESE FOUR COLORS MUST BE PRINTED IN LAYERS DIRECTLY ON TOP OF EACH OTHER IN ORDER FOR COLOR BLENDING TO OCCUR. IT ISN’T EASY, BUT TO BEST ACHIEVE THE CORRECT COLOR TONALITY, THE LAYERS MUST BE PRINTED IN ORDER FROM LIGHT TO DARK.
