The atmosphere is warm and cozy. With couches and high top tables, you feel right at home as they serve you your choices. The best spot in the shop might be one of the tables that provides a view of the glass covered kitchen. Trays of chocolates line the wall that make it impossible for you to resist another bite. If you happen to walk into NuNu Chocolates around the winter months, you will be pleasantly surprised with their offerings of wine and chocolate pairings or some of their delicious glögg, a sweet and aromatic Scandinavian mulled wine that is perfect on a cold night.

he first word that comes to mind after tasting a NuNu chocolate is perfection. Well-known for their hand dipped salt caramels, these little confections are heaven at first bite. Dipped in dark chocolate, these caramels are soft and smooth with a surprise ending: the crunchy sea salt. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and salty. They also have a variety of other caramel delights that beg to be eaten as well. Moving on to the ganaches will be just as satisfying. With unique choices such as the mezcal chili truffle with smoky flavors to the jasmine ganache with it’s gentle floral quality, the senses are definitely aroused.

bsolutely adorable is the word that comes to mind upon entering One Girl Cookies in Cobble Hill. Walking down the short corridor lined with retrolooking photographs and walls painted the color of eggshell blue, one cannot help but feel nostalgic for the past, but excited for what awaits in the glass cases ahead. As the name might suggest, they are known for their assortment of delicious cookies, ranging from orange butter creations topped with a light glaze and covered in shredded coconut to chocolate cinnamon ganache sandwiched between two hazelnut cookies. These petit little wonders may be small with sweet girly names, but each one is as savory and scrumptious as the next. While cookies may be their specialty, there are other sweet treats available that are just as tasty as the rest. A nice transition into their cakes might be the whoopie pies. A cross between cookie and cake, these delicacies come in chocolate and pumpkin flavors with cream cheese filling–the perfect bite before you try their red velvet cupcakes with vanilla buttercream.

Cobble Hill 68 Dean St Brooklyn, NY 11201 (212) 675-4996 onegirlcookies.com

Of course, if you prefer something colder, they have a small gelato bar on the side and an assortment of beverages that will leave you satisfied.

acques Torres truly feels like you are in another world. The Frenchman has created an atmosphere that feels as if you have walked into a small European specialty shop. Shelves lined with everything from chocolate-covered cheerios to brownie mixes, make it almost impossible to make a decision–of course, there are tables where you can sit and decide while drinking a cup of hot chocolate. Adjacent to the store is the factory where you can see chefs happily concocting the day’s latest batch of chocolate. Behind a perfectly polished glass window, lay the endless array of bonbons for your choosing. With box options for different amounts, it is always better to go bigger. Their creations range from creamy champagne truffles to tiny hearts filled with passion fruit purée. It can be difficult deciding which morsel you want to indulge in, which is why it’s imperative try to more than one.

Dumbo 66 Water St Brooklyn, NY 11201 (718) 875-9772 mrchocolate.com

If something hot and warm is your fancy, Jaques Torres’ famous hot chocolate will appease your cravings. Made with real chocolate, (never cocoa powder!) the end result is a thick and rich creation. If you prefer a little spice in your cocoa, try the wicked hot chocolate that has cinnamon, and ground, sweet ancho chili peppers.

Perfectly arranged in glass cases, the beautifully wrapped bars sit upon cocoa beans begging to be tasted. With bowls of chocolate available for sampling, you immediately know you are dealing with something extraordinary. Someone is always willing and able to answer any questions that might arise after browsing the selections. For a gift, the dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt is recommended, and of course, any seasonal specialties such as the dark chocolate, pecans and maple syrup are encouraged to try. The dark chocolate with cocoa nibs is a favorite and sure to be a crowd pleaser. There is truly no better place in Brooklyn, or New York City for that matter, to get your hands on pure American craft chocolate.

What is definitely note-worthy is the previously mentioned black chocolate stout. While the thick, opaque, dark black liquid gushes from the tap, you know this drink will not disappoint. There are the noticeable notes of coffee and chocolate (of course), but also the sweet smell of molasses that is faint. The taste is bold with a roasted coffee flavor, toast, and the chocolate. It’s smooth going down and one glass is just enough to satisfy your cravings. Feel free to move on to their other selections, just remember why you went.

ine & Raw will surely give you a unique tasting experience if that is what you are looking for. With and emphasis on green and sustainability, the chocolate is fair-trade and comes from a small cacoa farmers co-op that practices sustainable farming. The ingredients are organic, which means no unnecessary toxins, chemicals or pollutants are pumped into the environment. Even the packaging is recycled and the inks used are non-toxic and vegetable based. But on to the flavor. Fine & Raw offers bonbons and bars. The cacoa & coconut bonbon is a chunky truffle with creamy chocolate and coconut flavors and a smooth, crumbling texture. The lucuma and vanilla bar has notes of bread pudding, toffee apple and burnt caramel–definitely a variety of flavors that pleases the palette. If you can’t choose between the delectable bonbons and bars, there is the perfect solution: the bonbon bar. A dark raw chocolate bar has a thin line of bonbon truffle running down the inside center for the best of both worlds. It may be more difficult to find this chocolate without a flagship store, unlike the others, but the search will prove to be well worth it.

ho doesn’t love sitting around a campfire with a marshmallow on a stick, graham crackers and chocolate? In Brooklyn, the possibility of this is a bit of a stretch. However, Tumbador has solved this problem with their s’more bar, which is just as good as the real thing. A graham cracker topped with caramel and vanilla marshmallow, finished in 72% dark chocolate takes you right back to that campfire. If you are still feeling nostalgic and want to try more, the home-made ring dings, or li’l devils, as Tumbador calls them, is the perfect solution. Devil’s food cake filled with vanilla cream enrobed in dark chocolate taste much better than the store-bought cakes your mom use to put in your lunch box. In fact, Tumbador has a whole “Nostalgia Collection” which includes toffee crisps, peanut rice crispy clusters, animal crackers, pb&j bars, key lime pie caramels, and much more.

hile there is a bit of mystery surrounding Ladybird Bakery, (formerly known as Two Little Red Hens) it is the same great confectionery with the same famous cheesecake, Brooklyn blackout cake, and specialty cakes. While the space may be slightly cramped and a bit kitschy, the baked goods do all the talking. Known especially for their blackout cake, which involves chocolate cake, chocolate pudding center, chocolate fudge frosting, and chocolate cake crumbs sprinkled on top, you see why this dessert is so famous–it is a chocolate lover’s dream and rightly so. It is so strong and rich, it’s almost impossible to eat a whole piece. If you have the guts to try something else after the Brooklyn blackout cake, and want to stick with your city, try the Brooklyn cream: a yellow butter cake layered with rich pastry cream, and covered in a chocolate glaze. If truffles are your thing then do not miss the chocolate raspberry truffle with its’ mocha chiffon surrounded by a rich chocolate raspberry truffle center. It is glazed with chocolate, and decorated with buttercream and raspberries.

Most known for their king bar and beer & pretzel caramels, these are the biggest sellers. The king bar is one of their signature items with soft peanut butter nougat sandwiched between a brown sugar-brown butter cookie and a layer of fresh banana ganache, and dipped in milk chocolate. The beer & pretzel caramels, which have a cult following all their own, consist of Brooklyn Brewery’s Brown Ale and East India Pale Ale, reduced and stirred into caramel along with crunchy chunks of salty Martin’s pretzels. After nibbling on these tasty delights you might forget they also have a selection of honeycomb dipped in either milk or dark chocolate, a variety of brittles, and countless other sweet treats you must try.

Another dessert outpost with green and sustainability in mind, Liddabit Sweets use Ronnybrook cream in all their caramels, Brooklyn beer and Martin’s pretzels in the beer & pretzels, and Miss Amy’s Preserves in the pb&j. ocoa Bar is a quaint little spot in the heart of Park Slope. With plush chairs and couches, it’s easy to relax and indulge in a little chocolate. With a notably extensive drink menu, it’s hard to choose between coffee, tea, wine and chocolate flavored beverages. You are encouraged to explore the wine and chocolate pairings they suggest, or experiment with your own. If alcohol isn’t your thing, their hot chocolate is some of the best in Brooklyn. While it is extremely rich and creamy, it’s easy to finish a whole mug while reading a book. Their “chocolate oven menu” includes everything from chocolate covered cheese cake to a hazelnut velvet cake with hazelnut genoise soaked with creme de cocoa, rum, and kirsch with ganache filling. As with many chocolatier shops, you can also find an assortment of the most decadent chocolate pralines, truffles and bonbons, as well as many baked goods. Glass jars filled with cookies, brownies and chocolate croissants line the pastry case and make it hard to choose.
