A fishing rod is the heart of your tackle. There is an unlimited number of fishing rods to choose from but there are ways to narrow down the selection without having that overwhelming feeling ofwhere do I begin? Having the right rods for your style of fishing will be sure to increase the success of your outings. The frequency in which you fish, what species of fish you are fishing for and the environment you are fishing in, all play important roles in choosing the proper rods. There are multi section rods or collapsible rods, telescoping rods and single piece rods. If you fish on a regular basis and normally close to home, then single piece fishing rods will normally be your best choice. Single piece rods are normally more sensitive and more durable then the others. If you have to travel further to fish and you can't easily fit a single piece rod in your vehicle, then a multi piece or telescoping rods may be your best choice. Although, these types of rods aren't as sensitive as a single piece rod. Multi piece rods may also be a good choice for the beginner or one who doesn't fish often. These fishing rods are easier to transport and as a beginner, the sensitivity may not be as much of a factor as it would be to the seasoned angler. The type of reels you prefer to use will also determine the type of fishing rods you need. If your choice reel is a casting reel, then you will need a casting rod. If you are going to use a spinning reel, then you will need to have a spinning rod. The significance here is that the reel seat is on the underside of the rod and likewise with the ferrules or line guides. Maybe fly fishing is your favorite, then a good fly fishing rod is going to be needed. Rods made of bamboo make good fly rods. Fly rods are also chosen according to the weight of the line that you want to use. A fly rod with a smaller number such as three will only throw a very light fly and cast a short distance. One with a higher number assignment, such as an 11, will throw a much heavier fly and cast further. Fishing rods are made of different types of materials including graphite, fiberglass, steel, wood and bamboo. Fiberglass rods are great for kids and beginners. They hold up well and require little to no maintenance. Fiberglass rods are more flexible and can withstand more abuse that is generally brought on due to improper care and handling. They are also better to use when the rod is going to be under constant pressure and sensitivity is not as much of a concern, such as when you are trolling. Graphite fishing rods are a preferred choice for the more experienced fisherman. These fishing rods are lighter in weight and very strong. They just don't hold up very well to the abuse incurred from mishandling. If you are going to be saltwater fishing, you don't want to use any tackle that is made of corrosive metals. The rod handle is also important when choosing a fishing rod. The handle can be composed of materials such as cork, foam and wood. It should feel comfortable in your hand, and at the same time, be firm enough to feel the sensitivity of the fishing rod. You also want to make sure that the grip of the handle won't be susceptible to your hands slipping off when they are wet. You definitely don't want to throw your rod out into the deep water. That would not be good unless you just don't

want to use that rod again. If you plan on flicking a top water bait, you are going to want a short handle, comparable to a trigger handle. This will allow for more wrist action. If you plan on using lures such as crank baits, you are going to want a longer handle. These types of lures and similar, require more power when pulling the line. These handles should reach a spot somewhere between your wrist and elbow. If you are fishing in heavy cover, you will want a handle that reaches your elbow. Another major factor in choosing the right rod is the action and taper. This relates to how much the fishing rods will flex or bend. Fast action rods will bend closer to the tip and slow action rods will bend over the whole length of the rod's shaft. Medium action fishing rods will bend from the tip to the middle. The taper of the rod controls the action. A slower action rod will have a fast or short taper where as, faster action fishing rods will have a slow or long taper. Your hook setting power is directly affected by this. The hook setting power of a fast action tip is closer to the tip of the rod while the power of a moderate tip is more in the middle of the fishing rod. The amount of force needed to bend the rod is referred to as the power. This is mostly determined by the thickness and material that the fishing rods are made of. The power of the rod should complement the ratings of the line weight. As you can see, there are quite a few factors involved in choosing the right fishing rods. The frequency in which you fish, what species you are fishing for and the environment you are fishing in. The type of reel you like using, the material the fishing rods are made of, the handle and the action all come into consideration. You will learn which types are best for you through a little experimenting. In the end, it's all going to come down to personal preference, the specific factors that are important to you and the style of fishing you enjoy. I hope this article helps allow you to better understand the factors involved in choosing the right fishing rods. I hope your fishing experiences are as great as mine and Happy Fishing to All.
