INMATES set fire to holding cells

IVISIONS within the Kokstad SAPS at the Kokstad police station are reported to have come about as a result of a demonstration by more than 30 inmates in the holding cells, bringing the town to a complete standstill on Tuesday, 14 January. They also set fire to the cells using matches that were given to them by their visitors. The incident took place at around 2.30pm. After the police heard that certain inmates had dangerous weapons in the cells, they conducted a search of the cells and recovered cellphones, drugs, weapons including knives and other dangerous objects. The inmates then began toyi-toyiing because of the search. They threw hot water onto the police, refusing to obey the rules, while singing struggle songs and burning blankets and other property. Ambulances and firefighters were dispatched to put out the fire in the smoky holding cells, resultinginthepolicestationbeingindanger of burning down. Hope Street was blocked for hours as firefighters and the police tried bring the situation to order. However,afterseveralhoursofattemptingto restore order, the police requested back-up from the Port Shepstone Public Order Policing Unit who used teargas to calm the inmates down, after which they were taken to Kokstad C-Max Prison. TheEastGriqualandFeversentquestionsregarding the incident via e-mail, to the provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker, who confirmed it, saying that the episode was under

investigation and that they were trying to find out how weapons got into the holding cells. He reported that the cells were slightly damaged, but there were no injuries. The East Griqualand Fever learnt that the incident happened after a heated SAPS meeting when some members complained about not being protected from the so-called “dangerous inmates” at the Kokstad holding cells.

However, it is understood that the complaints had fallen on deaf ears as SAPS managementpromisedtolookintothematter,butnoimmediate action was taken. It is reported, although not confirmed, that on Christmas day inmates were allegedly drunk. Naicker, when asked for comment on this report, replied via e-mail: “We are not aware of the allegations.”

The Fever then asked him about allegations thatcertainSAPSmembershadbeensmuggling weapons to prisoners. His reply via e-mail was: “We cannot comment on those allegations at this stage.” Naicker said that a case of arson and malicious damage to property had been opened for investigationandthatnoarrestshadbeenmade at the time of going to print.

ACROWDofloudprotestorschantedoutsidetheKokstadRegionalCourt last Thursday against Zuko Mlandu (31), a police officer who allegedly shot and killed one of two Ward 1 brothers who were selling fireworks on the street on New Year’s Eve. The crowd from Horseshoe, Ward 1, was led by Councillor Phumzile Nocanda. Phumlani Gumede survived the shooting, but his brother Jabulani didn’t. Nocanda said they marched from Horseshoe to demand that the police officer not get bail. “We are here to oppose the bail of this man. We don’t take him as a man of the law, but consider him a criminal,” he said. He said the police officer acted like a person who had the intention of killing. “How do you shoot one person with five bullets and the other with seven bullets? There is no justification for what he did and the reports that he was drunk is a sign that he does not take his job or the people seriously,” he said. “The police are trained on how and when to use a gun. This man was just trigger happy,” Nocanda said. According to Phumlani, as told by Nocanda, said they were selling fireworks on the street on New Year’s Eve when the officer asked them for their permit which allowed them to sell on the street. The men reportedly complied and showed the officer their permit, then he left them to sell their goods. “A while later a drunk man [Mlandu] bought fireworks from the men and went away, but after a few minutes he went back to them and told them he was a policeman and showed them his badge,” Nocanda said. Mlandu then demanded that they show him a permit for selling on the street. One of them told him they have a permit in their shop and they went to the shop and showed Mlandu the permit. Mlandu allegedly then told the men that the permit was fake and said he was arresting them. Then an argument erupted as the men insisted that the permit was valid. They told Mlandu he was drunk and said they didn’t trust that he was a police officer as he was not wearing a uniform. During the argument Mlandu allegedly slapped a girl in the shop. “The Gumede’s got angry and took Mlandu to the police station to confirm that he was a policeman because they doubted him as he was drunk and abusive,” Nocanda said. On the way to the police station with Mlandu, the Gumede’s were approached by another street vendor who told them that Mlandu was a policeman, and told them to leave him alone because he was drunk. Theylethimgoandhetookafewstepsbackandthenstartedshooting at the men. Nocanda said Jabulani died on the spot. Phumlani is fighting for his life in hospital. Kokstad SAPS police confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder had been opened and transferred to the Independent Police Investigations Directorate (IPID).

ALTHOUGH the government deployed soldiers to help fight stock theft,drugtraffickingandstolenvehicle crossing hotspots along the borders of Lesotho, Matatiele and Maluti two years ago, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is still committed to help fight this ongoing crisis. of safeguarding borders from the SAPS they have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success. “On 28 November we arrested one undocumented person at the Qacha’s Nek border. On the 29 we arrested another person in the same area when we conducted our patrols,” said Mboniswa. She said on 7 January they arrested 20 undocumented people at Qacha’s Nek. The stock-theft problem began in 1999 when the South African government withdrew the army. Before then the SANDF maintained a strong presence along the borders of Lesotho and South Africa. When the soldiers were suddenly withdrawn there was a surge of stock theft, drug trafficking and stolen vehi-

cles crossing the border. Now soldiers are back on the border,workingdayandnighttofightthis threat. However, some Matatiele resident urged the government to empower soldiers with helicopters and motor bikes enabling them to move faster, involve community village patrolandgivethemradiostocommunicate with the police and soldiers within the borders of South Africa and Lesotho. Farmers said they are targets of cross-border stock theft which is costing millions and believe that the government is not doing enough to curb stock theft.

A MATATIELE mother Catherine Peters is inconsolable after her two sons drowned in a dam last Thursday. According to Peters, the boys, aged nine and five, were playing with their friends near a bridge just outside Matatiele on the way to Maluti. She said the boys had been riding their bikes and decided to stop at the dam for a swim. “It was very hot that day so I am assuming they were feeling very hot, but with their little reasoning they didn’t think about how deep the dam is,” Peters said.

The dam had overflowed because of the heavy rain that fell the previous day, and at the time had not returned to its normal level. Peters had been in town shopping for groceries when the drownings occurred. “I left them playing around our neighbourhood, and I don’t know when they went to the dam. I was told by their friend that they jumped into the dam and but did not surface,” she said. The police were called by community members and rushed to the dam. Matatiele spokesperson Lieutenant Raphael Motloung

said they don’t have divers at the Matatieleclustersotheyhadtocallthe Kokstad SAPS to assist with divers. “One of our police officers Warrant Officer Mhloli, even though he is not a diver, jumped in to look for the children,” Motloung said. The five-year old boy was found by a community member who dived in to help look for the boys. The second child was found on the other side of the dam by Mhloli. The distraught Peters said she was heartbroken when

they found the younger of the two dead. “His lips were blue — he was lifeless. I lost hope that they would find the second one alive. It was devastating,” she said. Shesaidsheneverthoughtthatshe would have to bury her children at such a young age. “I miss them already — they alwaysfoughtinthemorningwhenpreparing for school, but they always walked together holding hands,” she

said. Motloung urged parents to always keep an eye on their children and tell them not to play in dams. “We need to be strict with our children when it comes playing around dams. There is a swimming pool with a small entrance fee and children mustbetakenthereonhotdays,”Motloung said. He said an inquest had been opened at the Matatiele Police Station.

As you all knowtheresultswerereleasedthisweekbytheDepartment of Education. It is very encouraging to see that our schools are improving their matric pass rate. It is agreatpleasureformetocongratulateKokstadCollege for achieving a 96,8% pass rate for the class of 2013. Let me also congratulate Shayamoya and Mount Currie High School for achieving 73,13% and 72,39% respec-

tively. There are seven high schools in Kokstad and four of those got more than a 60% pass rate. We thank the teachers, pupils, parents and stakeholders for making us proud. I encourage those who have passed to start knocking on doors for assistance and those who did not make it to try again. Back-to-school campaign The Greater Kokstad Municipality schools were fortunate to be visited by councillors, Sukuma Sakhe stakeholders as well as the members of the KZN Legislature to do community work.

Residents deserve answers THE SAPS need to explain how inmates attained dangerous weapons in holding cells if they want to keep the public’s trust after this serious and embarrassing incident. Kokstad residents deserve to know what is behind troubling accusation that there are divisions within the SAPS which resulted in the chaos in the holdings cells on Tuesday. There is undoubtedly widespread corruption and abuse of power in the police service. First, the question might be asked why police management failed to sit with junior police officers to iron out their differences and problems. Communities are losing confidence in the SAPS and their negative attitude needs to change to one of trust between the police and communities.

Matatiele Local Municipality news WARM greetings to all readers. Back to school President Jacob Zuma declared education a societal matter. The Matatiele Local Municipality, through the special programmes unit, is assisting disadvantaged pupils with registering at higher learning institutions of their choice. Matriculants who have been admitted at tertiary institutions are advised to takle their statement of symbols, acceptance letter from institutions, proof of residence, etc. As part of lending a helping hand to less privileged pupils from Matatiele, the

municipality has bursaries available for the following fields of study — Bsc. agricultural science and Bsc. civil rngineering. HE ShredBettys, a group of adrenaline-fuelled female athletes, will be tackling the heralded Matatiele terrain on dirt bikes from 31 January to 2 February. The group, who host and co-host events, comprises of all levels of action-sports athletes from beginners to some of the leading figures in South African women’s action sports. Their forthcoming event is a three-day biking adventure to the base of the Three Sisters. ShredBettys’ vision to form a female fraternity of action- sports athletes who train, travel and compete together in motocross, enduro and off-road racing, surfing, BMXing, mountain biking, skateboarding, sandboarding, flowboarding and snowboarding has seen the group skyrocket to 1 000 members from across the country. Nicole Salt and Lanza van der Mescht, co-founders of ShredBettys, say the group are as much about camaraderie as it is goal-driven and believe it’s this balance that is the key to their success and popularity. “Our events mission is to create a progressive and fun atmosphere and welcome all abilities and give girls a place to showcase their skills and learn and progress,” Salt told the Fever. Havinghostedeventsacrossthecountry,including an annual end-of-year trip to Lesotho over the past fewyears,theShredBettysmadeitoneoftheirprimary missions to finally visit Matatiele for the first time in 2014 and teamed up with Sakkie Maartens to ensure a memorable event. “We’re always amped to ride new places and meet new girls. We have heard great things from the country’s top riders about their time spent riding in Matat and after seeing the photos, we were determined to go see it for ourselves. “Girls want to ride different places and terrain, but

don’t always know where to go, so we organise the trip and take them with so they can ride in a fun, safe environment with other girls. “Sakkie will be supplying the accommodation, the guided rides and all meals. He is good fun and super hospitable, his daughter [Codi Maartens] is the youngest member of our team and we are looking forward to the view from his pool and entertainment area that we have heard so much about after the ride.” Salt said she’s confident the group will revel in the Matatiele terrain but said beginner and intermediate riders will be catered for nonetheless. “After a fun and hard four days of riding in Lesotho, Ithinkweareallreadyforanyterrain.Havingsaidthat, we will split our group into two along the routes where the more advanced riders can tackle the harder stuff and the weekend warriors and newbies can just enjoy a chilled, easy ride.” Salt added that although the group are passionate about introducing more females to action sports, men and children are welcome to join them on their trips. “The girls all say it’s so much more fun riding with other girls than just guys all the time. It’s a lot more relaxed and the camaraderie is awesome, but we also still enjoy guys and families joining us on all our trips as most venues cater for families. This ride doesn’t really cater for kids but we have a few guys joining us again as they do on all our trips.” The three-day event costs R480 per day (single) or R420 per day (sharing) and includes accommodation, breakfast, dinner and two rides.
