Harrell Roberts, a Marine and Korean War veteran who fought at the Chosin Reservoir in late November-early December 1950, describes the conditions American and allied forces encountered during last year’s Veterans Day progam.

This year’s Veterans Day program for Effingham County will be held November 11 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Park of Effingham County in Springfield at the intersection of Highway 21 and First Street.

A Passion for History

Local historian pens book on World War I; is working on book about World War II

Norman V. Turner, a local historian, didn’t set out to write a book about World War I, but while researching a different topic several years ago, he happened to write a book anyway. Turner, who has produced 76 historical publications — books and pamphlets — completed World War I: Soldiers and Sailors from Effingham County, Ga., about 10 years ago. Turner said he has always been interested in history. “(It’s because) I come from this family,” he said. “We’re historians.” He said that during family visits at the historical Reisser-Zoller Farm, a place that has been in his family for many generations, he often heard stories passed around. “You come out here to visit … and that’s all they talked about, ‘aunt so-and-so went over there and married so-and-so,’ ” he said. As a youth he didn’t pay much attention to the oral history lessons, but as he has gotten older he thinks of those days sitting around the old farm house with his family listening to stories. “Man, I wish I had been writing it down,” he said. Over the years, Turner has spent much of this free time combing through archives at the probate court and sifting through microfilms at area libraries researching various topics. It was by chance he began compiling research for his book on World War I. “It was a byproduct of something else I was working on,” he said. He happened across some piece of information that interested him, and the project just grew from there. According to Turner’s research there were 401 World War I soldiers and sailors from Effingham County. “I was able research and find out how they died — for the most part — and where they died,” he said. “Three more people got added, so I guess I did a pretty fair job.” Not only has Turner’s family valued history, it has also valued service. Many of Turner’s relatives have served in the military — even as far back at the Civil War. Walter Zoller, Turner’s late uncle, was an airman in World War II.

“He was a right-waist gunner on a B-29, and flew 33 combat missions and two missions after the war ended.” Turner said. “He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for an air raid on Tokyo.” Turner was a member of the Georgia Army National Guard where he served as a chief warrant officer. He worked in uniform for 31 years and seven months and as a contractor for another eight years and 11 months for a total of 40 years, five months and 26 days, he said. Turner is a regular contributor to the Effingham Herald’s annual Veterans Day publication, this year submitting nine new additions (and a few clarifications). Turner believes it’s important to get the facts exactly right and values the stories of each veteran he researches, especially those who lost their lives. “There’s a difference between someone who lives to be 90 years old and comes back and does all kinds of things and that kid that (didn’t come back) … you don’t join the military to die, just the opposite, you join thinking that won’t happen to me,” he said. He currently is working on a book about local connections to World War II, but he says that book is still years away from being published. “I’ve got a lot to do,” he said. “World War II had way more people from Effingham County than World War I, and we had people after the war move here. It’s overwhelming.” One thing he has found particularly interesting with his research on World War II is the contributions people made on the homefront. Turner’s mother participated in an early alert system that monitored planes flying over Effingham. Other residents contributed to the war effort in other ways, donating materials, etc. He said he found the major contribution from this area to be paper because of the pulp harvested here. When Turner completes his various projects, he typically donates his work to libraries, including local libraries, Georgia Southern and others. Now that he has retired and is no longer traveling out of town for work, he hopes to have more time to spend focused on his projects.

Corporal Albert Ross Pomeroy, Battery A, 118th Field Artillery

Local historian Norman Turner provided several new additions to this year’s Veterans Day publication. One story he shared was about World War I soldier Corporal Albert Ross Pomeroy who tragically drowned along with six others at Hoboken, New Jersey, when the U.S.S. America sank on October 15, 1918.

‘Faithful to the last’

Corporal Albert Ross Pomeroy, WWI Corporal Albert Ross Pomeroy, of Clyo, entered the service from Effingham in May 1917. According to Turner, Pomeroy never made it to the battlefields of World War I. Pomeroy died along with six others when the U.S.S. America sank in October 1918. In a letter written home to his family, it was explained that Pomeroy died trying to alert his comrades of the danger. In the letter to Pomeroy’s father Jessie, Captain E.H. McElmurray wrote: “It’s with genuine sorrow that I write you the details of your son’s tragic death. October 14th, my Battery was sent forward as an advance detachment to occupy the transport America, the transport that was to carry our regiment overseas. In some way that has not

The U.S.S. America was acquired by the U.S. Navy for use as a troop transport soon after the United States entered World War I. She sank in 1918 but was soon raised and reconditioned. She transported almost 40,000 troops to France during World War I. After the armistice, she transported more than 51,000 troops back home from Europe.

been determined the boat became flooded and sank at the warf at 4 o’clock in the morning on the 15th. Your son and three more soldiers and three members of the ship’s crew were drowned. At the time the ship sunk your son was just coming off guard and it is my belief that he lost his life trying to warn his comrades who were asleep at the time. His was truly a soldier’s death, faithful to the last in the discharge of his duties.” In the course of his research, Turner discovered a letter Pomeroy wrote to a cousin dated June 19, 1918. In it Pomeroy wrote: “Hello Dear Couson (Cousin), I guess this is a little suprise, but you (need) not be surprised at any thing I do. I spent a few days at home with Cousin Clara, She told me (you) wanted to know my address. So as I am idle a minute I am going to try to drop you these few lines. We are trying to train 115 new men. We just got drafted in ... My goodness it is hot to have to drill now, most all these old ladies, they are now, are married. So it aint much pleasure to go home and stay long, of course it is all write to see the old folks but they are to serious to talk to. All that dont work for a man in the Army. Can’t ever feel serious about any thing. I understand uncle Julus is farming this year and he is so far away you all could not come to see me and it is impossible for me to get off to go around hardly at all. I sure felt like a bird (out) of a cage with my first Furlo (furlough) since I have been in (the) service. All folks were well and able to eat new Biscuits. Well news are very very scarce here for it is not having. But learning how to keep some one from killingyou here. Will close, Corp. A.R. Pomeroy Bat. A. 118 F. A.”

On Veterans Day, we pause to reflect on the courage, dedication and loyalty of our nation’s military veterans. Throughout history, their hard work and sacrifice have kept us safe and protected our freedom. We owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid, and we salute them for their service. To all of the brave men and women who have sacrificed to put their country first, we thank you.
