Spring Your Lawn Back To Weed-Free Life! Spring cleaning your house is popular now, but your lawn also deserves the same TLC to keep it healthy, weed-free, and looking its best for the busy Summer ahead. As winter recedes, your lawn – which can start to grow in ground temperatures of 10 degrees – now needs some early attention. Rake any bare patches and carefully sow some grass seeds mixed with top-soil. Remember to water well while seedlings sprout. On dry, sunny days lawnmowing can begin again, so start yours with a highest blade cut, just to snip the tops. Cutting the grass too short, too soon can attract unwanted weeds and moss. Good Spring weather allows local lawn care specialists GreenThumb to apply a special seasonal fertiliser – formulated to work even in cooler temperatures – to give grass essential nutrients to grow strong with vibrant colour. They also control any emerging, young weeds – especially broad-leaved such as Daisies, Dandelions and Buttercups – with a selective post- emergence herbicide. Lawnmowing Tips Milder winters – with ground temperatures of 5-10 degrees – mean your grass has probably continued growing all year. GreenThumb Worcester advises correct lawnmowing on dry and sunny days can make a huge difference. It recommends: Always sharpen or replace your lawn mower blade regularly, to avoid tearing the grass. Never remove more than one quarter the grass height in any one cut. Too short can weaken the grass and encourage weeds, moss and lawn disease. Remove grass clippings which contribute to surface thatch, and then moss. Save Time And Water With Oasis Any hotter, drier weather can turn your lawn yellow and dry. If you cannot water regularly, GreenThumb has pioneered the Oasis water-conserver. It encourages moisture to move between the grass roots and soil, so reducing watering and helping your lawn stay greener for longer. It can cut water consumption on heavy soils by up to 23% and on sandy ones by 50%. Imagine how much time you’ll save too! You can measure your lawn online at www.greenthumb.co.uk/measure for a treatment price estimate; or contact your local GreenThumb branch direct on 01270 750857 to book their professional and cost-effective service. SPECIAL OFFER! Request your FREE lawn analysis now and get your first treatment for just £10* during Spring-Summer 2018. To claim this offer, quote Spring18. (*T/Cs apply.)

Stay safe splashing about at the beach Splashing, wading and paddling at the beach, a water park or a lake can be a real treat on a hot day. Swimming is a top activity with all ages and can be lots of fun, especially if the sun’s shining. But drowning is a real danger and even people who know how to swim can get into difficulties if they fail to take safety precautions. The British coast is spectacularly beautiful, rich in wildlife and hugely popular, attracting people from considerable distances to enjoy a range of recreational activities. But the seaside isn’t most people’s usual environment so it’s easy to miss some of the hazards, warns the RNLI. Rip currents and offshore winds can drag you out of your depth while jellyfish, sea anemones and weever fish can leave you with a seaside souvenir you didn’t bargain on. Peter Dawes, RNLI Head of Lifeguards, says: “We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time at the beach. The RNLI’s advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach if possible, and swim between the red and yellow flags. “We also advise people not to use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas - and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates an offshore wind that could carry you out to sea. “If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help - and if you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.” The charity, which is funded entirely by donations and run by volunteers, is hugely busy in holiday periods so is asking people to take precautions to cut unnecessary risks. One lifeboat sent out in Exmouth rescued a couple from an inflatable dinghy with no equipment - not even oars. Blackpool’s RNLI volunteers were kept busy too rescuing two inflatable boats which got into difficulty when strong offshore winds swept them away from the beach. Other rescues included people who had been cut off by the tide, dinghies taken out to sea by rip currents and a man clinging to one of the legs of a pier. RNLI top tips to stay safe on the beach * Wherever possible, always swim at a lifeguarded beach. Go to www.goodbeachguide.co.uk to search for listings. * Always read and obey the safety signs to help you avoid potential hazards on the beach and identify the safest swimming areas. * When on a lifeguarded beach, find the red and yellow flags and always swim or bodyboard between them - this area is patrolled by lifeguards. * If you get into trouble stick your hand in the air and shout for help. If you see someone in difficulty, tell a lifeguard, or, if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. * If you can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach, find out about your chosen beach at www. goodbeachguide.co.uk Check weather and tides before you go. * Don’t use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas - and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this signals an offshore wind which could carry you out to sea. Whitegate Village Fair - Saturday 30th June Whitegate traditional village fair is being held as usual on the village green and in the school building and playground and the playing field on 30th June, from 12.30pm. This year we are commemorating the 63rd consecutive event in our village but we have moved the date to the end of June. We hope this will mean that the weather is perfect and more child centred games can be held on the school field. There will be maypole dancing on the green where the ribbons will be woven into an intricate pattern around the decorated pole. The King and Queen’s parade is always a colourful spectacle with many of the children from the school taking an active part in these traditional ceremonies. The many stalls will be packed full of toys, games, plants, bric-a-brac, books, cakes and other produce. Delicious teas will be available in the new school hall and the refurbished Mews during the afternoon. Homemade cakes, scones, biscuits and a variety of sandwiches will be served with tea, coffee and soft drinks, come and see our new facilities as well as the colourful and traditional fair. Some new and also traditional games will be set out for children of every age to try and there will be a raffle with many valuable prizes. Raffle tickets will be available on the day or in advance from a committee member. St. Mary’s Church will be open and there will be an organ recital for you to enjoy during the afternoon. It will be a most enjoyable and colourful event so come along and join us for the afternoon. All proceeds contribute to the upkeep of St Mary’s Church, Whitegate and the village school. If you require any other information please contact: Carole Sweet on 01606 883257 or by email, c.m.sweet@outlook.com or from other members of the committee and our church web site. Customers Reluctant To Cheque Out Payment options for British shoppers have never been more plentiful - or as complex - as they are today. Credit and debit cards, contactless cards, mobile wallets and now Pingit - technology innovations are coming thick and fast. But the latest research from Mintel reveals that despite all the advances in payment technology, consumers are hugely reluctant to give up on the humble chequebook. In fact two thirds of consumers believe that banks should be forced to continue to offer customers the option of having a chequebook. However it appears we are more reluctant to relinquish the idea than embrace the reality as consumers are keener on having the option than they are on actually using the service. An incredible 21% of the population have never even written a cheque and, in total, less than half have paid for anything by cheque within the last few months. Predictably, there’s a strong link between age and cheque use: some 52% of under-25s have never used a cheque, and a further quarter haven’t paid for anything by cheque within the last few months. Toby Clark, Mintel’s Head of Financial Services, says: “There’s a strong conservative streak among the British public, as confirmed by the the outcry and subsequent climbdown when banks tried to withdraw support for chequebooks. “But offering cheques costs banks money, and in the end, that costs all of us money. If people had to pay a little extra if they wanted to have the option of writing a cheque, I’m not sure that they’d still be as set on keeping that service going. “At the moment, consumers are mainly sticking to the tried and tested. Even people who have been issued with contactless cards are more likely than not to ignore the contactless feature. “However, Mintel’s research shows there’s also huge potential for change. There’s particularly strong interest in many of the features offered by mobile wallets. Payment providers need to prepare for a period of rapid change if they’re not to lose control of the customer relationship.” One of the reasons for people’s conservatism is an understandable fear that new payment methods could lead to greater levels of fraud. While 57% agree that they are worried about payment fraud, only 31% have actually been a victim of any kind of payment fraud in the last five years. Individually, the most common type of loss is card fraud with 14% having been a victim of this kind of theft. But it’s not just new payment technology that comes with security risks. When thefts of cash and losses as a result of being passed forged notes or coins are combined, the proportion of consumers who have been victims rivals that of card fraud - eight per cent have had cash stolen, and five per cent have lost money thanks to forgery. Clark adds: “The issue of payment fraud is absolutely central when it comes to convincing consumers to adopt new payment methods. Understandably, people are wary of any change to the status quo, but consumers’ fears are not always grounded in reality. “Notional threats associated with newer technology are often overplayed, while people are prepared to overlook very real security flaws in established payment technologies. But rational or not, these fears must be countered if new payment technology is to thrive.” This article was downloaded from http://www.freefeatures.com.

Fabric, Scissors Ruler/tailors chalk to mark or pen Pins &Needle ( or sewing machine) & cotton Tassle or buttons for decoration Step By Step Instructions‌ 1. Pic 2, place your fabric flat and measure 4 strips, 5cm in width and 20cm in length, turn the fabric inside out and sew the top and the sides, then turn the pieces back out using a long thin pen ( with the lid on otherwise it will damage the fabric) 2. Pic 2, start to place the strips on top of each other as in the picture. 3. Pic 3, start to plait the bookmark, making sure it is pulled secure, always good to pin as you go along, I also pressed to keep the plaits in place. 4. When you have your desired length for the bookmark, finish off at the bottom with a small hem, and add on the tassle, I made mine from a small piece of leather, give the bookmark a good press to flatten. 5. 34 Look up! and use All the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living amongst clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. What if there was a way to get more space for just a few hundred pounds and ready to use in less than a day? Sounds great. And in truth, the space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL installers to open covers the CW,CH & ST postcodes (Crewe, Chester, Stoke on Trent) and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about £280 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50 square feet of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. And by sourcing materials at the best prices, MTLL is confident it offers the most competitive prices in the area. That confidence extends to the quality of its materials and installations, with all parts and labour fully guaranteed. “We deliver on all our promises. That’s why we guarantee all our work,” adds Adam. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 15,000 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need in their home.” For a free survey and quotation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! 42 Charity golf day raises £40,000 for CAFT

Local children’s charity, The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust, has its amazing supporters to thank for raising a record breaking £40,000 at their 18th Annual Golf Day which was held at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa on Thursday 3rd May. 29 teams had a fantastic day of golÞng at the prestigious club followed by a fun prize-giving dinner in the evening hosted by the man behind Mere Golf Resort & Spa, Mark Boler. The corporate community came together to support the event to make it a huge success, with companies paying £100 each to become hole sponsors. The day teed off with a hearty lunch in the club before the teams took to the course for a wonderful afternoon of golf - where the golfers were kept entertained with a number of fun competitions such as Nearest The Pin, On The Green In One and the Longest Drive. There was also the opportunity to take on PGA professionals in Beat The Pro – the winner of which (Adrian Alves) went away a lesson plus a round of golf with the Mere Golf Academy. Events organiser at CAFT, Pippa Watton commented: “We were blown away to raise a record breaking amount this year, with proÞts ensuring we can provide free holidays at The ChildrenÕs Adventure Farm Trust, bringing fun and laughter to thousands of young children in need this year.” She added: “We really can’t thank our sponsors and golfers enough for making this possible.”

Andreas AMMF Army – Next Big Challenge, Cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia! My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers, much more research into finding an earlier way of diagnosing it is desperately needed. The AMMF is the UK’s only Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity, dedicated to tackling this devastating cancer on all fronts: providing information and support, campaigning to raise awareness, and encouraging and supporting research. Over the last 2 years with the help of my friends, I have organized lots of varied fundraising events, from Charity Ladies Nights, to climbing The Three Peaks in the middle of winter, Firewalking and more recently (Feb18) my ultimate challenge of climbing the world’s largest free-standing mountain Mount Kilimanjaro! On February the 23rd 2018, myself and some of AndreasAMMFArmy reached the summit (19,441 feet!). People and businesses have been so generous with their support, and all together so far, we have raised over a whopping £28,000! February 2019 is my next big mission – To cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia with some of my Kilimanjaro team and the new recruits to AndreasAMMFArmy, making us a strong team of 18 including my 16-year-old daughter Amelia. We will all be self-funding our places so 100% of funds raised will go directly to the charity. This will be a massive challenge for us all, as some of us don’t even own a bike yet! Many of my team have also been affected by cancer and have lost loved ones and wish to help me raise awareness and much needed funds for the AMMF cancer charity. Introducing my Vietnam-Cambodia Team!

I’m continuing to have scans every few months and have been told this devasting cancer could come back at any stage, setting myself these challenges has helped me to stay positive and focused. Keep checking our page as we will be planning some great fundraising events along the way before our big bike ride! If you would like to donate to the AMMF please visit my just giving page www.justgiving.com/Fundraising/ AndreasAMMFArmyVietnam2019 Thank you so much for reading this story – Andrea and her AMMF Army!
