Dear Readers - Welcome to the latest edition! I spent my Christmas juggling between the excitement of an 8-year-old playing with his new toys and trying to get in as many training walks as possible for my next big challenge. I did manage to achieve some beautiful walks around Tegg’s Nose Country Park and also a very cold Snowdon, with a wind chill of -12! It’s now only 3 weeks away until my next big charity fundraising challenge – Climbing to Kala Patthar just above Everest Base Camp a height of 5,645 m (18,519ft), raising money for the AMMF cancer charity! We also have lots of amazing new businesses in this issue ready to offer you their services, including Bensons Travel Ltd, they have published their 2020 coach tour itinerary in this issue, so if you fancy a road trip take a look! We also have The Woodlands Hotel & Pine Lodges in the Lake District, offering some lovely accommodation at a very reasonable price too! So if you are looking for inspiration or just want to get those DIY projects kick started for the New Year, then there are plenty of businesses on hand to help. Please remember when contacting any of the businesses in this magazine to mention that you saw them in here too! I run 5 separate magazines covering Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Congleton, Winsford and Northwich, reaching OVER 46,000 homes across Cheshire. We now also deliver over 600 extra magazines each month to businesses across these areas too! If you are a business owner or know someone else that is, please let them know about us, our little magazines really do work. Our magazines can also be viewed in full each month on our website, helping your advert reach an even wider audience! Adverts start from just over £21 per issue (based on the 1/8th page advert), with lots of offers available for longer term bookings! Please Follow us on Facebook & Twitter too and keep up with our latest information and offers. Wishing you all lots of happiness and good health for 2020!

Dating for the over sixties... More and more seniors are entering the dating game, with very few tools to handle this process in the electronic age. The monthly column is to help some people, describing pitfalls and safety, with a fair amount of humour from my own personal experiences. This month is all about dating websites. Finding the ideal dating site is a minefield, I liken it to finding the perfect handyman for home improvements (another project of mine, but that subject needs its own storyline). Sometimes a free site can work for you, but does an expensive subscription offer a higher success rate? Do you have plenty of time to dedicate to this, in which case being on multiple dating sites will broaden your search. For the over sixties, being on a general dating site means hours of sifting through profiles of much younger people, though most sites allow you to filter your search. It’s worth asking friends for recommendations, or even posting on local social media. I was shocked at some of the subscription rates, but most offer a short free trial and it is worth testing several. I can speak personally of two dating sites and encourage readers to add their own experiences of other sites. This was my initial dating website....chosen because, yes, I live in Cheshire and I am mature, so thought a targeted site was the best option. Although this site sounds like it is just for Cheshire residents, you can filter your search on distance from your town, which can include other counties. If you are not lucky enough to live in the beautiful county of Cheshire, replace Cheshire with your own county in the weblink. I set up my profile (that subject will be covered in my next article), was able to see profiles of other members and even send one message to each person who sounded interesting, all at no cost. But (isn’t there always a but?), I couldn’t read any messages sent to me unless I subscribed, which was less than helpful, so I chose a one-month membership at a discounted rate to test the waters. Of course, always remember to cancel a short membership or it rolls into the next payment, without any discount. This dating site covers all of the U.K., but it states it is specifically for the over 50’s. Remember I told you to seek recommendations from friends? Well, my cousin Karen gave me this one, because a friend of hers found love here. Again, I set up my profile free but (and this is a good but), I can send up to six messages a day for free and can actually read replies! There are additional subscription options, such as seeing who showed an interest in your profile, something that the maturecheshiredating site offers for free, but I personally have found it unnecessary (unless you are a serial message addict who will go over the six message daily allowance). Please feel free to send me your own general comments to on these two dating sites, or any others you have tried. There are some rating websites for all the top dating sites, which I didn’t use, preferring to test them personally without any preconceived impressions. Now I need your help I have been contacted by a lovely man called Joe who read my first article. He doesn’t use a computer but wants help in finding a lovely lady of a similar age to his own (74).  Joe is a widower and for most of his life was a dairy farmer.  He enjoys eating out, dancing, gardening and crown bowling and lives in Holmes Chapel.  If you know someone who wants to meet Joe, please email me Thanks for reading and look out for my next installment! Lostock Lodge Care Home delighted with ‘Good’ CQC rating

2nd January 2020; Residents and staff at Lostock Lodge Care Home are celebrating after receiving their latest CQC Report, rating them ‘Good’ in all areas, following a recent unannounced inspection. Lostock Lodge Care Home provides long term residential and respite care for up to 66 residents in the village of Lostock Gralam near Northwich . The report noted that the culture of the service was caring and focused on ensuring people received person-centred care that met their needs in a timely way. One relative told inspectors, “The service is excellent with care at the very forefront” another person said, “It is noticeable here that no one is forgotten about, all credit to the staff.” Inspectors observed that positive and caring relationships had been made between residents and staff. One relative said, “I have spent a bit of time in this home and it is nice to see relationships build between residents and caring staff”. “Our team at Lostock Lodge put our resident’s health and wellbeing at the heart of everything they do every day, we are delighted that this is reflected in the report findings,” said Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court Care. Operations Director, Helen Richmond was very pleased that the report highlighted the home’s clear vision, putting people at the centre of the service. “We have a lovely homely atmosphere here at Lostock Lodge, staff go above and beyond every day to ensure people feel well cared for and retain their independence.” Residents told inspectors that they were happy living at Lostock Lodge. One person commented “Without question this home is well led, just like a 5* hotel”. Residents are often asked about their care and involved in decision making, one person told inspectors “From time to time they actually ask what we think of our care and I was pleased to compliment two staff members recently”. The inspectors also found that people were very happy with the food offered. One person commented “The Chef is very good here and knows exactly what I need in my special diet” another person said, “I really enjoy the food, which is well cooked, varied and always a good size portion”. The report stated that people were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests. People living at the care home had told inspectors they felt safe and received their medicines on time. One person said, “They are so diligent in making sure that I take my medicines at the right times ”. The publication of the report marks the culmination of months of effort from staff and managers to take the care home from the previous ‘Requires Improvement’ rating to now being rated ‘Good’ across all the CQC categories of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Read the full CQC report for Lostock Lodge Care Home here: INS2-6088808201.pdf

Dane Valley Community Energy (DVCE) Ltd, a “not  for profit mutual society”, is constructing a Hydro  ‐electric Power Generator at Havannah Weir, just  to the north of Congleton. The project will reduce  greenhouse  gas  emissions  by  producing  enough  electricity to power the equivalent of 60 homes.  Furthermore,  surplus  operating  revenue  will  generate  Community  Benefit  Funds  to  support  local charities and sustainability projects, as well  as  provide  a  valuable  educational  resource  to  increase awareness of environmental challenges to the next generation.  Indeed students  from  local  schools  have  already  been  engaged  in  related  projects  during  the  scheme’s  development.  The hydro installation will use potential energy created by the weir, diverting some of the  water through a 2.5m diameter, 8m long, fish friendly Archimedes screw which drives a  75kW  electrical  generator.  The  River Dane  efficiency  will  be  optimised  using  a  Generator & electrical  Inlet pipe  sophisticated  control  system  equipment  designed and built in Congleton.  The  water is returned to the river without  loss. The power will be exported to a  Archimedes Screw  local factory, who have agreed to pay  commercial  rate  for  the  power  (a  Weir  much better deal than selling it to the  Outlet to river  4m high  grid).  The  scheme  will  also  benefit  from  a  substantial  guaranteed  green  energy  subsidy.  Extensive  woodland  management  is  being  introduced  on  the  site  and  a  boardwalk  will  be  constructed  for  supervised school and public access.    DVCE has established support partnerships with local businesses, especially Siemens PLC  and HMK Ltd, local schools and Congleton Town Council.  Furthermore, the Environment  Agency have expressed strong interest in collaboration through the installation of a fish  pass around the weir.

The scheme will be built, beginning in August 2020, on land already purchased by DVCE  and has all planning and other consents in place. The £700k capital for the project is being  raised  by  a  Share  Offering,  presenting  an  exciting  opportunity  for  both  small  and  large  investors alike.

Billy Nomates... EATING OUT Have you, like me, become disillusioned with eating out? It used to be something special, something to look forward to and something you could get the satisfaction from coming home with a full belly and empty pockets. There was an element of romance in the wine list which explained the hefty price tag. The waiters used to know what they were talking about and the chefs knew how to actually prepare and cook good food. And we used to get dressed up in Sunday best. We had silver service restaurants producing magnificence from silver serving cloches. Remove the top to reveal ‘un petit morceau de geiner culinerary qui ne nourrira pas une souris’, that translates as a ‘tiny morsel of culminera Genius that would not feed a mouse’. The truth was the less food we were served at the highest price the better we felt. We were made to feel special because snobbery became an aspiration. Now it seems that the whole business is staffed and run by bits of kids who couldn’t get a job as a plank. As in life everything appears to be part of the race to the bottom to achieve a bottom price and fastest satisfaction for the masses. We dontt even have to wait to be seated. It has become the norm to fill up with hot dogs, burgers and fries. No welcoming, no plates, no decent cutlery only bits of plastic which the world now resents. I blame Mrs Thatcher for her role in helping to invent Mr Whippy Ice Cream to help boost the British seaside economy by placing more vehicles on the road selling a fast food solution. Of course we grew to accept food in paper, cardboard and polystyrene cartons (plastic). Don’t get me wrong, there is only one way to eat fish and chips and that is in paper with heart stopping portions of salt drowned in vinegar washed down with dandelion and burdock with sea air in the nostrils. But it costs a fortune to travel to the seaside for the experience. Gone are the good old days that were special when visiting restaurants. So now it is too often delivered TV dinners. But we can dream and I dream ever so well. I dream of flavours of the Orient served by Geishas attired in pure silk. I dream of being presented with lobster dishes of the highest order served al fresco by the ocean. I dream of steak so tender I fall in love with it but devour it just the same, with the aroma of Paris all around me. I dream of a banquet where nobody lifts a soup spoon until her Majesty has lifted hers. I dream of sipping Lancome Pink champagne while sampling oyster and caviar. But I awake to reality and drive to the local greasy spoon for a life threatening fry up for breakfast and count the hours to a bag of chips and curry for lunch, a few beers for tea and a donna kebab with a mountain of hot chilli sauce to guarantee another sleepless night! Updates from The Office of Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire….

PCC funding for prisoner rehabilitation programme

Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner has awarded a grant to a charity which uses performing arts to support serving prisoners.

Fallen Angels performing at the Storyhouse in Chester

Funding from PCC David Keane’s Safer Communities Fund will support Fallen Angels Dance Theatre to deliver a dance programme for Cheshire inmates at HMP Berwyn in North Wales.

The group supports people in recovery from addiction and poor mental health to transform their lives, and to share their recovery journey with the wider public, through dance, performance and creativity. They offer a structured pathway to promote recovery, through participation in community workshops and progression to volunteering and live performance. This particular project will see Paul Bayes Kitcher, an artistic director in recovery from addiction himself, deliver a six-week dance theatre project within the Wrexham prison. It will support residents to gain a sense of resilience and well-being in order for them to realise the power that movement and dance expression can have on their recovery. The group also hopes to use the project to develop referral pathways, encouraging inmates to get involved in their resident activities at the Storyhouse in Chester once they return to the community. PCC David Keane said: “Providing a positive activity for prisoners to engage in as they are about to leave prison and when they integrate back into the community will help reduce reoffending. “Fallen Angles do a fantastic job working with hard-to-reach individuals who wouldn’t usually engage with performing arts. Their activities help offenders or other people with complex needs engage in an alternative form of recovery which they can hopefully sustain long-term. “I look forward to seeing how this project will help people turn their lives around and bring an end to their criminal activity.” Claire Morris, from Fallen Angels, added: “We are extremely grateful that PCC David To advertise call 01270 765619 or visit

Keane is supporting this project which will make a real difference to Cheshire residents residing in HMP Berwyn. “The workshops will educate residents to make positive and healthier choices and give them an alternative to crime and anti-social behaviour. Furthermore, the support will not stop when they are released as they’ll be able to access our dance workshops in Storyhouse along with a self-support group for adults with complex needs.” Fallen Angels is one of hundreds of organisations across Cheshire which has received Safer Communities Funding over the last few years to support crime prevention or meet the objectives within the commissioner’s police and crime plan. Chicken Chow Mein.... This Chinese favourite takes a little bit of preparation but contains lots of delicious fresh flavours and is ready in less than 30 minutes. All the ingredients can be easily found in most supermarkets, but you’ll need a wok! Serves 2. First, prepare the sauce. Remove the skin from the ginger using a potato peeler and grate 1tbsp from the root. Mix in a bowl with the crushed garlic, ketchup, soy sauce, oyster sauce. Add 3tbsp water and stir thoroughly to combine. 2. Deseed and slice the peppers, remove the ends from the spring onions and slice into strips. 3. Immerse the noodles in a pan of boiling water, then remove from the heat and let soak for 4 minutes before draining. 4. Heat the wok until it starts to smoke, then add the oil and chicken strips and keeping them moving with a wooden spoon, cook until lightly sealed. Add the pepper, and stir fry for another minute. 5. Add the sauce to the wok and stir with the chicken until bubbling. 6. Remove the drained noodles from the colander and add to the wok. Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update… My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. There is only one charity here in the UK that offers help and support to people affected by this deadly cancer, called The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity. I have since made it my ongoing mission to raise much needed funds and awareness for them, along with my family and friends now nick named as #AndreasAMMFArmy! Since November 2016, we have organised lots of local fundraising events, including Charity Ladies Nights, climbing The Three Peaks, Firewalking, a Mad Hatters Cycle Tea Party, Letters to Santa, Bag Packs and running a regular charity stall at Sandbach Rock & Pop festival. We have also done some more significant challenges – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and more recently cycling over 450km from Vietnam – Cambodia! Charity Bag Pack at Morrisons in Middlewich - Saturday 21st December On Saturday the 21st December, we did a charity bag pack at Morrisons in Middlewich. I was joined by members of my family, and some of my friends known as ‘AndreasAMMFArmy’. Our fantastic team of Santa’s helpers packed lots of bags on the day and managed to raise a huge sum of £874! This was only made possible by the generosity of all the lovely Customers that shopped in the store on the day. I would also like to thank all the amazing staff at Morrisons in Middlewich for helping and supporting this charity too. All donations from this day have already gone directly to the AMMF charity.

Andrea & Sophie

The Next Big Challenge is just weeks away – Everest Base Camp February 2020! We are now just weeks away from this epic challenge, climbing to Everest Base Camp! On the 13th February we fly to Kathmandu to start our epic adventure and hope to climb just beyond Everest Base Camp to Kala Patthar – a height of 5,645 m (18,519 ft)! This will be a huge challenge to all of us, as February is one of the colder months to do this. I’m very lucky to have my 16-year-old son Sam, my husband Chris and my sister Mandy Morgan joining me this time, along with 11 other loyal friends (Michelle Johnson, Andrew Suter, Anne Holdcroft, Marie Williams, Sharon Newton, To advertise call 01270 765619 or visit

Lisa Taylor, Dylan Hughes, David Wiley, Oly Rhodes, Erica Cordock & Neil Pollock). Many of these amazing friends have already been part of my previous adventures, including the amazing Michelle Johnson, who has joined me on every trip so far! We all self- fund our places on these trips, so all the money we raise along the way goes directly to the AMMF charity. Since November 2016, when I first started my fundraising mission, we have now raised nearly £60,000! This has Everest Base Camp Team only been possible with the #AndreasAMMFArmy continued support from my family, friends and the generosity of the many local businesses that have regularly helped and supported many of my fundraising events. We would also like to thank the following businesses that have kindly sponsored the banner we will be taking with us – The Window Repair Centre, Bluebird Care Cheshire East, Auto’s Revived, Sandbach Roofing, Haslington Play Barn, Land Recovery Ltd, Lornfords, A.O. Events, Chelford Farm Supplies, Cowaps and The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance. Every penny raised has gone directly to the charity and helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly Thankyou to our sponsors! cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward! If you would like to donate to the AMMF please visit my just giving page AndreasAMMFArmyEBC Thank you so much for reading this story and please keep checking my JustGiving page to see details of our latest fundraising activities! - Andreas AMMF Army Please mention the Northwich Directory when responding to adverts
