Revive!

David Baxendale established his Revive franchise in 2003 and it has proven the answer to many a car owner’s prayer ever since.

Dan Hallam

Dan Lyons

he franchise covers East Cheshire from Altrincham, Knutsford and Wilmslow to Macclesfield and Congleton, and when I launched it I believed that it would prove popular because of the pricing – it’s cheaper than taking your car to a bricks and mortar body shop,’ says Knutsford resident David Baxendale. ‘However, we soon learned that in fact it’s the convenience of the service that our customers really appreciate. We come to you and do the work on your driveway, or place of work, at a time that suits you – it takes away all the pain and hassle of finding a bodyshop, booking it in and then being car-less for a day or more.’ David currently operates three vans; Simon Homer and Dan Lyons are the paintwork specialists, while Dan Hallam specialises in bringing alloy wheels back to their original glory. He is also currently in the process of adding a fourth technician to the business; who is completing the intensive ‘Head Office’ training required. ‘The real joy of being part of a nationwide franchise is that all the technicians are given intensive and ongoing

training,’ says David. ‘We’re part of a nationwide organisation, with all the benefits that this brings, but for our customers, they know that they’re dealing with a chap who lives locally, who is embedded in his – their - community.’ We all know the frustration when that smallest of scrapes results in a scratch that won’t rub out with a cloth and a bit of spit, and for many of us with cars that have pearl or metallic paint, the heart sinks when we realise we need to bring in an expert. With Revive, paint matching and mixing happens right there, on your driveway. ‘Paint mixing to get an absolute colour match is a given with Revive. We use state of the art equipment and the accuracy of the match is the best there is. We weigh each paint component to milligrams to get an exact match to the manufacturer’s published paint codes. And it takes real skill to prepare damaged bodywork before it’s sprayed. I’ve watched Simon at work and it’s a delicate task to have it as smooth as when it left the factory. We have many loyal customers who use us time and again.’ This is not to say that David’s customers

‘T

Simon Homer are a clumsy bunch; in this part of the world car leasing is quite common, and sending it back as pristine as it was delivered isn’t easy when two years of stone chips or kerbing those alloys have taken the shine off. I have had cause to use Revive myself on more than one occasion (and only one of these was a sneaky don’t-tell-the-husband job after I reversed our brand new SUV into a low wall and did something rather too visible to the back end. He still doesn’t know, that’s how quick and easy and financially painless it was to get it fixed.) ‘The pain and hassle of booking into body shops – not to mention the sometimes outrageous pricing – means that often people leave scratches or chips on cars that then affect their value or cost you when you hand it back. It’s just so easy to give us a call and get it sorted.’ I’ll second that. Not to mention escaping stony stares over the dinner table, ladies. 16 THE COST OF LONG TERM CARE HOW 100,000 FAMILIES ARE PAYING MASSIVE CARE HOME BILLS THAT THEY DON’T NEED TO Every 10 minutes an elderly person has to sell their home to pay for long term care. Currently if someone has assets over £23,250 they will pay for their own care. Despite various political parties promises that those who save will see their wealth ‘cascade down the generations’, today it is estimated that three out of four people whose parents go into a care home lose all or most of their inheritance to pay for the cost of residential care. As part of the assessment process councils have the power to investigate the way in which any capital or assets have been disposed of before going into care. What they are looking for is ‘deliberate deprivation of assets’ whether it be signing over a property to a relative or giving away large sums of money. There are things you can do legitimately to ensure that your family do not lose out. Make Sure a Relative Lives in Your House If you own your property but your spouse remains in it when you go into a care home or a relative aged over 60 or incapacitated your home may be disregarded as part of the financial assessment. Act Early Speak to a professional as soon as possible. Depending on the age and circumstances of a person, assets can be protected as part of long term estate planning. So act early, when you are fit and well and unlikely to require imminent residential care. How you own a property is crucial. Being ‘tenants in common’ will protect 50% of the property at least. Rely on a Family Trust A person could transfer the ownership of a property into a lifetime discretionary trust. Again this has to be done early and as part of your long term Estate Planning. There are many important benefits of setting up a trust such as helping mitigate and reduce probate fees, generational inheritance tax planning and sideways disinheritance. This will enable you to keep on living in the property and retain control with the ownership of the property going to the beneficiaries of the trust on your death. For a FREE no obligation chat with one of our experienced legal consultants please ring East Cheshire Estate Planning on 01625 410688. This can be at our convenient office or in the comfort of your own home.

Spring Your Lawn Back To Weed-Free Life! Spring cleaning your house is popular now, but your lawn also deserves the same TLC to keep it healthy, weed-free, and looking its best for the busy Summer ahead. As winter recedes, your lawn – which can start to grow in ground temperatures of 10 degrees – now needs some early attention. Rake any bare patches and carefully sow some grass seeds mixed with top-soil. Remember to water well while seedlings sprout. On dry, sunny days lawnmowing can begin again, so start yours with a highest blade cut, just to snip the tops. Cutting the grass too short, too soon can attract unwanted weeds and moss. Good Spring weather allows local lawn care specialists GreenThumb to apply a special seasonal fertiliser – formulated to work even in cooler temperatures – to give grass essential nutrients to grow strong with vibrant colour. They also control any emerging, young weeds – especially broad-leaved such as Daisies, Dandelions and Buttercups – with a selective post- emergence herbicide. Lawnmowing Tips Milder winters – with ground temperatures of 5-10 degrees – mean your grass has probably continued growing all year. GreenThumb Worcester advises correct lawnmowing on dry and sunny days can make a huge difference. It recommends: Always sharpen or replace your lawn mower blade regularly, to avoid tearing the grass. Never remove more than one quarter the grass height in any one cut. Too short can weaken the grass and encourage weeds, moss and lawn disease. Remove grass clippings which contribute to surface thatch, and then moss. Save Time And Water With Oasis Any hotter, drier weather can turn your lawn yellow and dry. If you cannot water regularly, GreenThumb has pioneered the Oasis water-conserver. It encourages moisture to move between the grass roots and soil, so reducing watering and helping your lawn stay greener for longer. It can cut water consumption on heavy soils by up to 23% and on sandy ones by 50%. Imagine how much time you’ll save too! You can measure your lawn online at www.greenthumb.co.uk/measure for a treatment price estimate; or contact your local GreenThumb branch direct on 01270 750857 to book their professional and cost-effective service. SPECIAL OFFER! Request your FREE lawn analysis now and get your first treatment for just £10* during Spring-Summer 2018. To claim this offer, quote Spring18. (*T/Cs apply.)

GARDENING- Worlds most expensive flowers Let’s face it, the value of your garden is no more related to structures, decorative pieces, size and plan than intelligence is to the colour of your eyes. What really counts is the treasures you have growing therein. Even if it’s the smallest space you could ever hope to cultivate anything in, anyone that considers themselves even halfway to being a serious horticulturalist will recognise the rarity of the petals blooming from those flowerbeds. But what are the world’s most expensive species? We decided to look into things, and think we may have the answer- at least in so far as flowers are concerned. Take a look below and if you spot anything that looks like these in your own plot remember to tread extra (extra) carefully. Gloriosa - $6-$10 per stem AKA the flame lily, or glory lily, there’s only one real problem here. Although stunning to look at with its deep reds and yellows, this is actually rather poisonous. Still, it really does look gorgeous. Saffron crocus - £2,200 - £1,500 per pound The clue is in the name here. Saffron is considered the world’s most expensive spice by weight, and this is the source, with 80,000 flowers giving growers just 500 grams of the end product. Rotchschild’s Orchid - £5,000 per plant After it was discovered in 1987, the Rotchschild’s orchid nearly became extinct, such was the frenzy to smuggle and sell. That didn’t happen thanks to careful cultivation, but the only place you can see one in the wild is now Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia. Shenzhen Nongke orchid - $202,000 per plant The priciest flower ever bought was actually developed in a lab by the Shenzhen Nongke corporation, before it was put up for sale at auction, and an anonymous buyer forked out 1.68million Yuan for it. Kadapul flower - beyond value Elusive, at least in part due to the fact it very rarely blooms- once a year if the planets are correctly aligned- this simple, elegant species is indigenous to Sri Lanka, and anyone lucky enough to catch a glimpse should consider themselves truly blessed. Fabric, Scissors Ruler/tailors chalk to mark or pen Pins &Needle ( or sewing machine) & cotton Tassle or buttons for decoration Step By Step Instructions‌ 1. Pic 2, place your fabric flat and measure 4 strips, 5cm in width and 20cm in length, turn the fabric inside out and sew the top and the sides, then turn the pieces back out using a long thin pen ( with the lid on otherwise it will damage the fabric) 2. Pic 2, start to place the strips on top of each other as in the picture. 3. Pic 3, start to plait the bookmark, making sure it is pulled secure, always good to pin as you go along, I also pressed to keep the plaits in place. 4. When you have your desired length for the bookmark, finish off at the bottom with a small hem, and add on the tassle, I made mine from a small piece of leather, give the bookmark a good press to flatten. 5. 37 Visual Arts Cheshire award win

Local arts group Visual Arts Cheshire has received a prestigious award in recognition of the projects and exhibitions it has delivered over the last year.

The organisation scooped the ‘Visual Arts Award’ at the annual Cheshire West Community and Voluntary Arts Awards for 2018, held at Chester Town Hall on Tuesday 5th June.

Visual Arts Cheshire was recognised for its community arts projects including the summer Northwich Art Trail, Heritage Open Day events, and exhibitions at Weaver Hall Museum amongst other events.

The group was also commended for its work with college students and a set of workshops being held at Turning Point, while special reference was made to its Children’s Art Trail too.

This involved the participation of over 1,000 primary school children and led to their artwork being featured on the walls of the Northwich subway at the completion of the trail.

Visual Arts Cheshire chairman Alan Carr was delighted to accept the award on behalf of the group.

He commented: “This is a prestigious award and it’s such an encouragement to us all that that the Voluntary Arts Network recognises the hard work that our volunteers have invested in our many projects, all of which are intended to beneÞt the community.Ó

For more information about Visual Arts Cheshire and the many projects it delivers throughout the year, check out their Facebook page.

42 DIY & Home Improvement: DIY mistakes you don’t want to make It can be tempting to take on home improvement jobs for yourself. It gives a greater sense of satisfaction when things go right, and saves you money on hiring someone else to do it. Or at least that’s true in theory. The reality is, though, if you don’t really know what you’re doing even the most relatively simple jobs can soon become nightmarishly expensive due to damaged tools and materials, breakages, and the damage you can cause. Here are 10 major mistakes that are easy to avoid with a little preplanning, so take a look and be sure to take in the advice rather than risk falling foul of these DIY crimes. Forgetting a spirit level If something needs to be straight and level then make sure it is. Always use a spirit level for jobs like putting up a shelf, ensuring you won’t wind up with objects falling off. Neglecting to use primers Not everyone knows that watermarks cannot be covered up by painting over them with a waterbased emulsion, regardless of how many coats are applied. But now you do. Instead use an oil-based primer first to seal the stain in, then move to the emulsion. Failing to plan for the future It’s easy to forget that you might need to access something further down the line, particularly when it comes to boxing in or adding panelling to any plumbing related area. There will be leaks at some point, and you will need to get at the pipes, so think ahead and use one removable panel or concealed door in your design. Spending more (or less) than you need You don’t always need to have top of the range kit, but nor do you want sub-standard stuff either. Scrimping on items like paint brushes is a surefire way to cause yourself a headache- they have less bristles, and the bristles they do have are likely to come off and get stuck to your paint. That’s just one example, too. Not protecting surfaces Let’s say you have a skirting board to paint, but a carpeted floor that might suffer if you get any gloss on it. The obvious solution is to pull the carpet back, for example, but this is probably also highly impractical. Cover up what needs to be protected with masking tape, and any other joining surfaces that don’t want to be touched. Ignoring the need to support shelves properly If you want (or just need) a shelf on a partition wall it’s vital to first find the studwork behind the plaster, and use this for support. Fail on this and the screws and nails will come out with the slightest weight. The wooden posts you’re looking for act like a backbone and hold the screws tight. If these are in an useless position, though, you can also use cavity fixings that anchor screws to the plaster. This article was downloaded from http://www.freefeatures.com.

Andreas AMMF Army – Next Big Challenge, Cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia! My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers, much more research into finding an earlier way of diagnosing it is desperately needed. The AMMF is the UK’s only Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity, dedicated to tackling this devastating cancer on all fronts: providing information and support, campaigning to raise awareness, and encouraging and supporting research. Over the last 2 years with the help of my friends, I have organized lots of varied fundraising events, from Charity Ladies Nights, to climbing The Three Peaks in the middle of winter, Firewalking and more recently (Feb18) my ultimate challenge of climbing the world’s largest free-standing mountain Mount Kilimanjaro! On February the 23rd 2018, myself and some of AndreasAMMFArmy reached the summit (19,441 feet!). People and businesses have been so generous with their support, and all together so far, we have raised over a whopping £28,000! February 2019 is my next big mission – To cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia with some of my Kilimanjaro team and the new recruits to AndreasAMMFArmy, making us a strong team of 18 including my 16-year-old daughter Amelia. We will all be self-funding our places so 100% of funds raised will go directly to the charity. This will be a massive challenge for us all, as some of us don’t even own a bike yet! Many of my team have also been affected by cancer and have lost loved ones and wish to help me raise awareness and much needed funds for the AMMF cancer charity. Introducing my Vietnam-Cambodia Team!

I’m continuing to have scans every few months and have been told this devasting cancer could come back at any stage, setting myself these challenges has helped me to stay positive and focused. Keep checking our page as we will be planning some great fundraising events along the way before our big bike ride! If you would like to donate to the AMMF please visit my just giving page www.justgiving.com/Fundraising/ AndreasAMMFArmyVietnam2019 Thank you so much for reading this story – Andrea and her AMMF Army!
