The ability to communicate internationally has never been more critical A recent survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit, “Competing Across Borders”, highlights just how much the current world economy is spurring companies to look internationally for their business. Why does English language training really matter? Although a terribly overused phrase, it’s still true that our world is getting smaller every day. We live on a planet that is already totally borderless when it comes to trade, economic interdependence and travel. As a result we already meet, interact and do business with more people and international organizations than ever before. And with a world population now standing at 7 billion with 2 billion speaking or learning English already, the need

for clear, consistent and unambiguous business communication is only getting bigger. Common understanding and clear borderless communication have become the bridge for international business and competitive economies.

Reasons and trigger factors for choosing english training

International expansion Achieving international success requires your work-force to be up to speed on their language skills, and able to handle client requests, negotiations and customer service in other languages.

Cross-border collaboration

Improved competitiveness

To facilitate cross-border collaboration organisations see an increased demand for improved language skills among staff members.

The most common reason companies sign up for our courses is to improve their competitiveness. Most companies operate in highly competitive and increasingly international industries, so their managers need to maintain excellent language skills to ensure that no business opportunities are lost in translation.

Mergers

Internal training programs

If your company merges with another company, having a common corporate language of English will assist the successful integration of the two cultures.

Language training courses often form part of a company’s training program for high achievers.

Corporate reasons 4 corporate.abroad@ef.com

Competing across borders A recent Economist Intelligence Unit report reveals how strong communication skills builds a strong business, and how English is the uncontested worldwide language of business. Other highlights include: • Nearly 50% of global executives surveyed admit that communication misunderstandings have stood in the way of major international business deals and resulted in significant losses for their company • Over 3/5 of companies surveyed think a lack of clarity in their internal cross-border communication often results in lost productivity • Even when recruiting for jobs in their home market, almost 1/2 of all companies say that prospective candidates need to be fluent in a foreign language • Effective cross-border communication and collaboration are becoming critical to the financial success of companies with international aspirations

Personal development Language training can form a part of a company’s reward system for team members who have excelled.

Promotion If you or a member of staff in your team is ready for the next career move, language training is often necessary. More senior roles usually demand more frequent interaction with foreign partners and colleagues.

Individual reasons www.ef.com/efc 5

Immersion abroad There are several reasons why taking a language course in a country where people speak the language as natives, is better than taking one in your home country. Faster learning Experts agree that the fastest way to make significant improvements in a language is to be immersed in a country in which it is spoken. This is largely because it is only through immersion that students are exposed to informal learning experiences. These experiences include interacting with locals and problem-solving in real-life situations, all of which help the students to put their lessons into practice and speed up the learning process. English-only environment Speaking English, and more importantly, being required to do so, boosts our cognitive language skills very quickly. That’s why in our EF institutes we keep a strict rule that English is the language

6 corporate.abroad@ef.com

spoken at all times. As the institute provides a professionals-only environment, you will have plenty of opportunity to apply your learning in the classroom to a more social context outside of it, while networking and communicating with fellow professionals from all around the world. Cultural exposure Immersion learning is the best way to gain exposure to the cultural traditions and customs of a nation. Sensitivity to such factors is critical for successful international communications. That is why we include host family accommodation as part of our standard course offer. That is also why we make sure to offer cultural activities outside of the scheduled classroom hours.

With over 2,000 hours of interactive multimedia tutorials, as well as specialized online tools to help with accent reduction, grammar development, vocabulary memorization and writing skills, EF’s iLab makes training more efficient by enabling you to make individual improvement beyond the classroom. Social interaction We know that long-lasting progress and true language fluency only really come when students become confident enough to converse in social situations, and understand cultural nuances contained within that language. That’s why our courses include exposure to cultural

Georg Ezegelyan Philips Healthcare, Germany

“Due to the increasingly international nature of business, my Manager and I realized that it had become crucial for me to improve my English language skills. After researching the options, EF’s Executive 1-to-1 course, with its personalized course content, stood out to me as the most effective way of improving my English. Within just one week of my stay at the beautiful Executive Language Institute at Cambridge, I realized that my English had improved a lot and that I could communicate confidently with the other people in the language institute. I’m certain that the fact that my teacher structured the course around my specific requirements was absolutely key in helping me reach this level.”

Our students 10 corporate.abroad@ef.com

Client 02 Sascha M. Kellerhaus Schaeffler Industrial, Germany “With EF, every student’s needs and objectives are taken into consideration when the course is planned. The classes were structured in such a way that I could quickly reach the English language targets I had set for myself. The set-up combining one-to-one lessons with group classes makes the program very dynamic. The private sessions allowed me to learn at my own pace and were focused on my individual needs. The group classes gave me the opportunity to learn together with other students at the same level through conversation-based lessons. My time with EF in Cambridge really helped me gain greater confidence when presenting in English, and has improved my general English communication skills greatly.”

Client 03 Liljana Savic Tetra Pak, Sweden “As a former student I was really looking forward to returning to EF’s Executive Language Institute in Boston. I had high expectations for my continued studies and I was really looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces at the school. Sure enough, I had a very warm welcome back to the school and felt at home right away. The classes have an excellent structure with lots of dialogue between student and teacher. The best part was that all the assignments were tailor-made towards my specific needs and desired skillset. I would wholeheartedly recommend a course at EF´s Executive Language Institutes to anyone considering improving their English language skills, they are really effective and a lot of fun.”

Client 04 Hilton Nunes Hilton Nunes consulting, Brazil “The atmosphere at the Boston school is very friendly and the classes are really well-planned. Staff and teachers work continuously to motivate you and make you feel comfortable. They really go the extra mile to make sure all your personal needs are catered for. The conversation-based classes have helped me gain greater confidence in speaking and presenting in English as well as meeting people from around the world with different cultural views and accents. The social aspect of the immersion program is not to be forgotten. Every Tuesday drinks are organized to welcome all the new students at the school. This is a great opportunity to socialize with other students and teachers and get a bit of extra conversation skills practice. The city of Boston has a vibrant social scene with hundreds of restaurants and pubs where you can enjoy a drink or two during your free time.”

The American Revolution began here in the 18th century and more recently Boston has become

a center of intellectual, technological and political ideas. To learn more about the history of Boston, we recommend a duck tour. A duck is a vehicle from World War II that has the capability to go on both land and water. The duck tours stop right outside EF Executive Institute. Local guides make learning the history of Boston fun! Sporting and cultural attractions Bostonians take pride in their sports teams. Boston’s baseball, basketball, football and hockey teams have all won national championships. Renowned Boston performing arts groups include the Boston Ballet, Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. Hit the slopes, beach, or Big Apple Boston is perfectly positioned for a fantastic weekend getaway. New York City, the “Big Apple”, is a just a high-speed train ride away, or take a boat to Cape Cod and relax on the beach. The mountains of nearby Vermont are a great place to hit the slopes and practise your skiing. Golf courses, tennis courts and hiking trails are also easily accessible.

The teachers and staff had exceptional knowledge and expertise in their field. They really made an effort to make me feel comfortable so I'd get as much as possible out of my stay.

EF will not be liable for loss, damage, or injury to persons or property howsoever caused, save where the liability is expressly imposed beyond exclusion by statute. EF’s Learning Guarantee Our experience shows that, on average, a student will progress to a new level of the EF scale upon completion of 2 weeks of language training. After level 8, progress from one level to the next may require longer (4-6 weeks) courses. This is due to the increased complexity of language acquisition at those levels Progress rate will also depend on individual qualifications such as mother tongue, attendance, time spent on homework and individual study techniques. If learning goals are not met, taking the above into consideration, our learning guarantee will allow you to study free of charge at our online school, until you reach your predetermined goals. The Learning Guarantee is valid for all courses offered in English at our Institutes in London, Boston and Cambridge. Validity of Brochure Prices Please note: the prices published in this brochure are based upon currency exchange rates in effect at the time of writing (May 31, 2012).
