Abstract In this work the feasibility of cogeneration is analysed for the Alfonso VIII dormitories of the University of Valladolid. Considering actual consumption data, the thermal demand was obtained by means of dynamic simulation of the building. Different alternatives were discussed, sizing the cogeneration on the useful heat demand according to the Directive 2004/8/CE. Natural gas was considered as the fuel in all the cases. The resulting cogeneration unit was an internal combustion engine with 100 kW of electric power and 138 kW of thermal power. The current plant consisting of boilers feed by gas-oil, was selected as the reference case and different alternatives were set out. Thus, it was considered both the single substitution of the existing boilers by new high efficiency boilers and the integration of cogeneration in that new plant. In the latter, two cases were defined, the joint renovation of boilers and cogeneration and the stepped renovation where first the new boiler plant is implemented and then, the cogeneration is included in a second stage once that plant is amortized. It was observed that, although the last case does nof offer any economic profitability, amongst first two cases, the joint renovation of boilers with cogeneration was underlined as the preferable choice. This option, besides a significant economic performance, provides the benefits derived from distributed energy production. ARCHITECTURE AND CRISIS
