Japan's Resilience in the face of Catastrophe
eople around the world have witnessed the devastating disaster that ravaged Northeastern Coast of Japan on March 11, 2011. The town of Sendai, Honshu, is the nearest major city to the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that has triggered an extremely destructive tsunami waves that killed thousands of people. The tsunami was rated as a “major tsunami”, being at least 3 m (9.8 ft) high. The actual height predicted varied, the greatest being for Miyagi Prefecture the hardest hit place, at 10 m (33 ft) high. The T?hoku earthquake is one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world, so powerful that it moved Japan’s main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) closer to North America and shifted the Earth on its axis and shortened day by 1.8 microseconds. The tsunami also damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant triggering the government to declare a state of emergency following the failure of the cooling system at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, resulting in the evacuation of nearby residents. 50 workers are hailed heroes by the world as they braved the radiation, risking exposure to save the lives of millions from a possible nuclear meltdown. Countries all over the world are showing their sympathy and support for the victims of the massive earthquake and tsunami that rendered even the most technologically advanced country as Japan helpless. Twelve days after the disaster the death toll now climbed to 9,523 and still expected to increase, 2,755 injured and 16,094 people still missing. The fortunate ones who were lucky to escape are now living in shelters and still trying to locate their missing love ones and in dire need of help as food and water and gas become scarce and help are being slowed down by the threat of radiation. After seeing the tragedy that struck Japan the whole world have poured in their prayers and messages via tweet, facebook and other means of media to communicate their sadness on what transpired. 102 coun-
tries and 14 international organizations immediately offered their assistant in a rescue effort to help Japan seek for survivors from the massive quake and tsunami. Famous and ordinary people alike have joined together in their humanitarian effort to raise funds for the victims of the biggest disaster that Japan encountered since the great Kobe earthquake in 1995. Countries rush to send rescue teams and supplies as a humanitarian support in these desperate times. More than 450,000 are now living in shelters making the most of what was left and given to them. It is heart wrenching to watch the most documented earthquake and tsunami that unfolded but what is more heart wrenching to watch is how the Japanese survivors are facing what happened in a calm and dignified manner. The resilience and respect for each other of this people are admirable given their circumstances. Amidst the triple disasters that struck this country and with the growing fear of a nuclear meltdown, no looting or riots were ever reported. People fall in line for hours for just a bit of food and water and gas. There were no display of anger or outbursts, no complaints even in their pitiful condition. They always put the others first before their selves and share to others what they have even if they themselves need water and sustenance. They have displayed traits that the whole world cannot help but admire and love. Their determination and courage to rise above the occasion is definitely unparalleled. The disaster has made an impact on the whole world and we should be thankful to God that we still have the chance to make a difference. On this note, we should realize that this is the time to give back in any way we can to a country who is the second most generous giver of foreign aid in the world. Let us all offer our prayers for the loss of lives and livelihood and uncertain future. Let us pray that Japan may be able to rebuild their lives and come out of this crisis stronger and braver.

In the wake of the Japan Nuclear Crisis, what can we do to protect ourselves and our families from the potential risks?
Currently there are three operational Nuclear Power Plants in Taiwan and a fourth one is underway. And now the citizens have growing concerns amid the Japan Nuclear Crisis despite the assurances of the governement. The Jinshan Nuclear Power Plant is located in Shihmen District and the Guosheng Nuclear Power Plant is in Wanli both are in New Taipei City. No. 3 is the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant in Kenting. The Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant (formerly Gongliao Nuclear Power Plant and Fourth Nuclear Power Plant) in Yenliao Township and which is believe to be lying within an area known for its underwater volcanoes. Lee Chao-shing, a professor of applied geosciences at National Taiwan Ocean University, said last year that as many as 70 underwater volcanoes are located within an 80km radius of the soon-to-beoperational Fourth Nuclear Power Plant in Gongliao District wherein up to 11 of those volcanoes are active. Why talk about nuclear power plants? Nuclear power plants operate in most states in the country and produce about 20 percent of the nation’s power. Nuclear power plants use the heat generated from nuclear fission in a contained environment to convert water to steam, which powers generators to produce electricity. Nuclear radiation is a byproduct of nuclear fission, and radioactive particles released into the air can be harmful to people, animals, crops, and the environment. Although the construction and operation of nuclear power plants are closely monitored and regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), accidents at these plants are possible. An accident at a nuclear power plant could release dangerous levels of radiation that could affect the health and safety of the people living near the plant.
What is radiation?
Radioactive materials are composed of atoms that are unstable. An unstable atom gives off its excess energy until it becomes stable. The energy emitted is radiation. Each of
NO W April 2011
us is exposed to radiation daily from natural sources, including the sun and earth. Small traces of radiation are present in food and water. Radiation has a cumulative effect. The longer a person is exposed to radiation, the greater the risk. A high exposure to radiation can cause serious illness or death.
How can I protect myself in case of a nuclear power plant accident? The three basic ways to reduce your exposure are through: • Time. Decrease the amount of time you spend near the source of radiation. • Distance. Increase your distance from a radiation source. • Shielding. Increase the shielding between you and the radiation source. Shielding is anything that creates a barrier between people and the radiation source. Depending on the type of radiation, the shielding can range from something as thin as a plate of window glass or as thick as several feet of concrete. Being inside a building or a vehicle can provide shielding from some kinds of radiation.
company or government officials. • Evacuate if you are advised to do so. • Close and lock doors and windows. • Keep car windows and vents closed; use re-circulating air. • Listen to a local radio station for evacuation routes and other instructions. • Keep your pets with you and take them with you if you evacuate. You will not be allowed to return for them until local authorities say that it is safe to return. • If you are not advised to evacuate, remain indoors. • Shelter livestock and give them stored feed, if time permits. • Bring pets indoors with you. • Close doors and windows. • Turn off the air conditioner, ventilation fans, furnace, and other air intakes. • Go to a basement or other underground area if possible. • Keep a battery-powered radio with you at all times. • Use the telephone only to report life-threatening emergencies. Lines will be needed for emergency calls. • Wash uncovered food before eating it. If you suspect you have come into contact with radioactive particles: • Take a thorough shower. • Change your clothes and shoes. • Put exposed clothing in a plastic bag. • Seal the bag and place it outside. • If you suspect that your pets have also come into contact with radioactive materials, shower with your pet if at all possible. If you shower first and then deal with your pet, you may re- contaminate yourself. Be sure to lather fur and rinse thoroughly. Afterward, keep direct control of your pet to control what it contacts.
What to Do During a Nuclear Power Plant Emergency • Listen carefully to the warning. Not all incidents result in the release of radiation. The incident could be contained inside the plant and pose no danger to the public. • Stay tuned to a local radio or television station. Local authorities will provide specific information and instructions. • Be aware that local instructions should take precedence over any advice given on national broadcasts or in books. • Review the public information materials you received from the power
What to do after a Nuclear Power Plant emergency • If you were told to evacuate, do not return home until local authorities say it is safe. • If you were advised to stay in your home, do not go outside until local authorities say it is safe. • Get medical treatment for any unusual symptoms, like nausea, that may be related to radiation exposure. • Until local authorities say it is safe, do not return home or, if you are sheltering at home, do not allow your pets to go outdoors for any reason. What is the potential danger from a nuclear power plant accident? The potential danger from an accident at a nuclear power plant is exposure to radiation. This exposure could come from the release of radioactive material from the plant into the environment. The area the radioactive material may affect is determined by the amount released from the plant, wind direction and speed, and weather conditions. The major hazards to people in the vicinity are radiation exposure to the body and inhalation and ingestion of radioactive materials.

eople residing in Taiwan are very lucky since they do not need to go to other countries to enjoy the beauty of Cherry Blossoms. Taiwan is home to a wide variety of cherry trees that blooms from February until early weeks of April. So people should not miss the chance to see the full bloom of the cherry blossoms which is a romantic sight to behold. Cherry blossom or Sakura is a sign of good fortune and an emblem of love, affection, and represents the coming of spring. Cherry blossom viewing is an increasingly popular springtime activity. More and more cherry trees are being planted in hilly suburbs and downtown areas of New Taipei City. The city’s Tourism and Travel Department says that cherry trees start to blossom by the end of January, but people have already seen some trees blooming ahead of time in Wulai. Apart from Wulai, which is a well-known place for cherry blossom spotting, Sanjhih, Tamsui, Pingsi, Jinshan and Shi-

hding also provide plenty of observation points. Cherry trees in these areas come into blossom at the beginning of February. These places could be good options for outdoor walks over the Lunar New Year holidays. The tourism bureau says that there are several varieties of cherry tree in Wulai, with each variety blossoming at different times. The Taiwan cherry, Yoshino cherry and Yaezakura cherry come into flower one after another. The best time to view them is between February and March. Cherry blossoms are to be seen all over Wulai’s scenic area, as well as various kinds of mountain birds that flock among the flowers, so people can enjoy the cherry blossoms and go birdwatching at the same time.
area. The Cherry Blossom Avenue is about three km long, with 1,200 native Taiwan cherry trees and 500 of the Yoshino variety. They blossom in February, creating a stunningly beautiful scene when they are in full bloom. About five km from Tamsui lies the Tianyuan Temple, where 600 Yoshino cherry trees blossom in mid-tolate March. So many visitors come to see these flowers that the line of vehicles can stretch for several kilometers. Cherry trees have been being planted along roadsides in Sanjhih since 1996. There are now 15,000 of them along almost 70 km of road, and they can be seen in full bloom in early February. Source: www.taipeitimes.com

Whomever he will end up with, my main concern is pag pinakilala kay Bimby, di ba? magkaroon sila ng magandang relationship?”

The indie film was not me acting. It’s not about me getting into acting or being an artista. It’s about football. It’s about promoting football. Maybe she just misunderstood it.” So huwag nilang gawin way yun para murahin bastusin kami at tapak – tapakan ang pagkatao namin. So huwag nilang gawin sa amin yun.”
Sad.”

John Apacible’s Sudden Death

Japan’s nuclear crisis has sparked panic buying of anti-radiation medications on online bids in Asia, but health experts hosed down the hysteria and warned the pills are of limited use. Supplies of potassium iodide, a preventive against radiation poisoning of the thyroid gland, are running low at some manufacturers in the U. S. Here are some Q&A’s from the World Health Organization (WHO) about potassium iodide: What are potassium iodide pills? Potassium iodide pills are a source of stable (i.e. non-radioactive) iodine. The thyroid gland requires
iodine to produce thyroid hormones. The presence of stable iodine in the body in an appropriate amount blocks the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine (radioiodine), reducing the risk of thyroid cancer which may follow from exposure to radioiodine. Potassium iodide pills are not “radiation antidotes”. They do not protect against external radiation, or against any other radioactive substances besides radioiodine. They may also cause medical complications for some individuals with poorly functioning kidneys. As per the World Health Organiza-
tion (WHO) potassium iodide should be taken when it is recommended by public health authorities. If you are at risk or have been exposed to radioiodine, potassium iodide pills may be given to protect the thyroid gland from uptake of radioiodine. This can reduce the risk of thyroid cancer in the long run, when given before or shortly after exposure. As of now we are not advise to take the said pill since the threat of radioactive in the country is not eminent, only the people residing within a number of radius from the nuclear plants will be advised to take once the needs arises.

Food & Water - Remember to add plenty of food to your survival kit. Foods that are resistant to spoilage, i.e canned foods, beef jerky, raisins, etc. are the best choices for emergency kits. Place at least one gallon of water in each survival kit you make. Depending on the emergency, it may be hard to get to a water source or find water that is safe to drink. Which also makes adding a water purifier important to a disaster survival kit. 3. Radio - Place a small battery

How to love consciously
By Alex Blackwell nowing how someone wants to be loved and then providing that love are two separate things. Sometimes marriages and other relationships end because either one person does not understand how to love or meet the needs of the other; or one partner refuses to meet the needs of the other. To love consciously is a choice. Mary Beth and I often say being married is very similar to having another full-time job – you get out of it what you put into it. Our marriage is like a savings account. My wife and I make deposits into it never expecting we may need to make a withdrawal. However, when we do request a withdrawal there are no associated penalties. With over 23 years of marriage under our belts, we have found the following strategies work best to love intentionally; to love authentically and to love consciously.
Be Happy, Not Right
Here’s a question for you, “Would you rather be right, or happy?” Too often our pride and egos can keep us from enjoying intimate relationships. We stew over what we think are injustices, but are perhaps only misunderstandings. We carry grudges and do not show enough grace, passion or forgiveness to the person we care most about. Our need to be right can overshadow our need to receive, and give, love. Take a look at what your pride is costing you. If intimacy is strained and the relationship is off track you may want to reconsider the value of your anger or self righteousness. Here’s the thing: You may be right in the argument although you partner thinks otherwise, but you will never be wrong when you put your partner first. Happiness always feels better than vindication.
No Day But Today
What would you say to your partner if you knew this was the last day you would be together? Would you complain about the television being too loud, or would you remind your partner of their value and significance? Life does have an expiration date. This isn’t meant to be a downer – just a reality we all share. It’s what you do with this information that will make the difference. While it’s very difficult to sustain a high-level of connection and passion on a day-today basis, there are some simple things you can do to convey your partner’s importance to let them know they are important today: * Kiss your mate at least twice a day * Leave a quick note just to say “hi,” or “I love you” * Never do anything you wouldn’t want your partner to know * Be fully present when they need to talk or share something important * Make the effort to spend some time together each day

Price Hike for Japan airline tickets
In the wake of the nuclear crisis more and more Filipinos residing in Japan are deciding to evacuate and return to the Philippines in the hope of escaping the radiation threat. However, sky high prices of airline tickets are hindering our countrymen in their desire to be able to get home safely. They are requesting the Philippine government to help them pay half the amount of the plane ticket that soar up to P160,000 from the usual P30,000. However, Philippine Airlines, (PAL), said that they did not raise its airfare. They explained that ticket prices are usually much higher when purchased just days before the flight. PAL also urged people to buy tickets online instead of through travel agencies. The Airline will also waive re booking fees for those with advanced tickets who wishes to go to Philippines much earlier.
Banco Filipino sparks ire and panic from depositors
Depositors in branches in Kamias, Timog, and Munoz in Quezon City were surprised to find out the bank is closed Tuesday sparking panic that the thrift bank went on a bank holiday. But the Banco Filipino vice chairman Perfecto Yasay denied the accusation saying that some of its employees did not report for work on Tuesday. Since March 11 the thrift bank had difficulty servicing withdrawals and couldn’t clear checks. Banco Filipino admitted that there had been “extraordinary financial panic” and “heavy withdrawals” and blamed the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for not acting on their request for a P25 billion financial assistance. One of the client deposited her P80,000 that she is saving for her children’s tuition fee, but now feels frustrated because she cannot withdraw her money. Another one is a client who depends on her monthly interest to buy medicines for her diabetes cannot help but cry in despair.
Public warned vs. excessive iodized salt intake
A simple “thank you” in response to a trivial or ordinary item can make a significant difference. It only takes a few short moments to utter these two words, but the impact can be felt for a very long time. Showing gratitude is also the best strategy for ensuring the things you are most grateful for continue to happen. When we stop and tell our partners what we are grateful for, we are also telling the Universe. By making the effort, the conscious decision, to express our thanks we are in a better position of receiving more of it in the future. If you want your partner to be grateful, it starts by you showing gratitude, first.

* Give a compliment * Make your partner feel important * Smile
Judgments are often times rooted in perception, not reality. Judgments are also a piece of how you see the world, not the way the world, or in this case your partner, actually exists. The harm with judgments is resentment and anger are typically the outcomes – not the change that is expected. When a judgment is made, there is an implied belief the behavior or trait being judged should be corrected. However, the person receiving the judgment does not always share the same expectation. As a result, communication is impaired, connection is deteriorated and conflict ensues. To love deliberately and consciously requires loving your partner with a different filter – a cleaner filter that does not have the residue of past contaminants.
Be Aware of Your Own Thoughts & Feelings
Loving authentically is dependent on loving yourself, first. Before you share love, and share yourself with someone, it is important to beware of what you want. Reality suggests, however, we fall in love and begin relationships before we have a clear idea of our own true feelings. When this happens, there is still plenty of time to discover your needs – this is called growth. Give yourself opportunities outside of the relationship. Build friendships and pursue interests on your own. A good relationship exists when both people can live without the other, but choose to be together. A relationship built on a foundation of sharing different interests cultivates more life and depth into it. You own your thoughts and feelings. These make you unique and keep you grounded with who you really are or growing to become. By doing so, you are in a much better position to love freely and honestly. Nature has a way of taking care of those things we put the most energy in and want to grow even stronger. -----------------------------------------------------Alex Blackwell is the founder and primary writer for www.thebridgemaker.com, an honestly written lifestyle blog dedicated to finding faith, sharing inspiration, and highlighting stories of personal change.
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday warned people who insist on “protecting” themselves against nuclear radiation from Japan that an overdose of iodized salt could result in poisoning. It also allayed fears of radiation-tainted food products reaching the Philippines, saying it remains limited to the area near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. In an advisory posted on its website, the WHO said it is dangerous for people to take in large amounts of iodized salt if only to avoid the effects of radiation. “It is dangerous to take large amounts of iodized salt in order to increase the amount of stable iodine in the body. Increasing one’s daily intake of iodized salt will cause more harm than good,” the WHO said. It stressed that sodium chloride is acutely toxic in large amounts, that even tablespoon quantities of salt repeatedly taken over a short period of time could cause poisoning. Sun Star

House votes 212-46, impeaches Ombudsman
After eight hours of marathon debates last March 21, the House of Representatives impeached shortly after midnight Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez in a voting that more or less followed party lines. Voting 212-46 with four abstentions, the House impeached Gutierrez, eight months since the first of the two impeachment complaints was filed against her in July. Those who voted “no” came from both the administration and the opposition bloc, including former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, Siquijor Rep. Orlando Fua, and Deputy Speaker Jesus Crispin Remulla. There were unconfirmed reports that San Juan City Rep. Joseph Victor Ejercito changed his vote from “no” to “yes.” Among those who abstained were Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado-Revilla, wife of Sen. Bong Revilla, and Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar, son of Sen. Manny Villar. The abstention appears to be connected to the fact that both senators would be acting as judges when Gutierrez’s case goes on trial in the Senate. Most of the “no” votes came from the opposition bloc. Gutierrez is accused of betrayal of public trust for allegedly sitting on major corruption and human rights cases involving Mrs. Arroyo and some of her officials. The Philippine Star
Nakasaad sa desisyon ng CA na “The petitioner’s Urgent Motion for Clarification dated February 7, 2011 is granted”. NO W April 2011

” (Hebreo 6:18-19B) Ipinaliwanag ni John W. Ritenbaugh sa kanyang artikulo, Trumpets Is a Day of Hope ang talatang nabanggit.
