Spring is in the air!

Lente is hier!

Spring is in the air! The sweet smell of Spring blossoms is everywhere. It’s so good to hear the birds chirping early in the morning now that Winter has packed its bags and is heading North. It’s been a long, cold Winter and we can begin to look forward to braaivleis, sunny skies and seasonal hayfever! Here are details of some of the RPA Members who are celebrating the new season by hosting functions at their places of business. Why not go along and support local business and have fun at the same time!

“Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” - Samuel Johnson (1709– 1784), famous author and poet.

We are growing! The Randfontein Publicity Association held its bi-monthly networking function early in August at Orion Olives in Elandsvlei.

RPA networking functions are becoming more and more popular with members as networking is an effective way to promote one’s business or organisation and get to know other business men and women in Randfontein.

The turnout was excellent - over 50 people attended and members were given the opportunity to “Show & Tell” in a type of mini-expo. Several members displayed their products and services while others brought pamphlets and flyers. Owner of Orion Olives, Hettie du Toit sponsored the venue, snacks, drinks and delicious lasagna, salad and dessert.

The RPA would like to encourage members (and Randfontein residents) to support local businesses to help build a strong local business community. Diarise: October’s networking function will be held at Griffin’s Estate on Thursday, 13 October in conjunction with the 2012 Randfontein Show launch. Invitations with all the details will be emailed in due course.

Hettie has thousands of trees on her property and produces a top-quality olive oil and olive byproducts and members queued to buy bottles of the home-grown olive oil.

Hettie praised the Publicity Association for the wonderful publicity she received during the Randfontein Show, as well as on the television programme, Fiesta. On 6 June this year KykNet’s Fiesta broadcast a half-hour programme about the 2011 Randfontein Show.

Follow up on charity donation Earlier this year the RPA held a Persian Carpet Auction/ Evening that included two carpets that auctioned in aid of charity. R7000 was raised for the Hillside Care Centre (an RPA member) and the centre’s founder, Sister Ronel Bondesio, said this money would go a long way to buying paint and for the centre and buying a few necessities. Local optometrist and RPA member, Jannus van der Molen bid on and bought both charity carpets. This month we give feedback on the Centre and on how the money was used. Hillside Care Centre “We bought paint for the interior and are busy painting the kitchen,” says Sister Ronel. “We used the bulk of the money to buy food for the Centre’s residents and also managed to buy some bookcases and much needed mosquito nets.”

Sister Ronel checks on a patient. The mosquito nets also protect the elderly and infirm from flies.

“We have between 20 to 40 people attending our movies nights and also receive a lot of support from the community,” says Ronel. “Often people drop off fruit, vegetables, tinned food, mattresses and blankets. I just wish there was more we could do to help more people who have no one to care for them. At least here they get lots of love and attention and medical care.”

The Centre caters for the elderly, homeless or mentally disabled who are unable to care for themselves. Patients who have undergone surgery or are ill and have no one to look after them while they recuperate, also make use of the Centre’s services. There are currently 17 patients/residents, but close to 40 people receive a cooked meal from the centre on a daily basis (children and adults from the surrounding community who are poverty stricken). Below is a typical ‘menu’ for residents: 06:00 - Tea and a rusk 08:00 - Juice, porridge, bread and protein. Coffee. 11:00 - Tea, coffee & biscuits 13:00 - Soup, a cooked meal (meat/chicken, rice & two vegetables. Dessert 4 x times per week, tea or coffee. 16:00 - Tea, coffee & biscuits 17:00 - Soup, protein and a sandwich and fruit 18:00 - Tea, coffee and night medication.

The Care Centre has an impressive collection of books to keep residents occupied. Some of the carpet auction donation went towards installing additional bookshelves

The facility is self sufficient and relies entirely on donations and income from residents (those who can afford to pay). Fund-raising is in the form of movie nights where a large sheet is erected outside (weather permitting) and supporters can watch two movies, receive a hot dog and cold drink for only R20. One movie and a hot dog and cold drink only costs R10.
