Transnational Education – UK Qualifications in Malaysia

Transnational Education (TNE) – An Overview

Š Mat Wright

Transnational education (TNE) refers to the provision of education by one country offered in another. It does not include the traditional international student recruitment market where students travel to another country for their studies. In Malaysia, a UK TNE means that students based in Malaysia, are pursuing UK educational qualifications. All over the world, people want greater educational opportunities to enhance their lives and employment prospects. We live in a globalised world so our focus in education is on bringing an international dimension to education in schools, technical colleges and universities, on raising educational standards by sharing the UK’s expertise, and on encouraging the

9

best international students to obtain a UK qualification. As a result, TNE has become a major part of the UK higher education landscape, and sits at the heart of the internationalisation strategies of many UK universities. In 2011/12, the number of students studying for a UK degree overseas, i.e. TNE degree, was over 570,000 - a greater number than the number of international students studying in the UK (435,230). Out of these 570,000 students, approximately 80 percent are at undergraduate level and 20 percent at postgraduate level. Demand for TNE is predicted to continue to increase significantly in the coming years.

The terminology for UK programmes delivered outside the UK are used by UK institutions to mean different things and are often used interchangeably:

Dual / Joint award The UK institution and local partner provide programmes leading to two awards conferred by both institutions (dual award) or a single award jointly by both institutions (joint award).

Twinning / Franchising The UK institution licences a local institution to teach some or all of its course, so that students can receive the award from the UK institution without having to attend classes physically in the UK campus.

Validation The course is developed and delivered by the local institution. The UK institution assesses whether it is of appropriate quality to lead to its award. The UK institution will determine the extent to which it exerts direct control over quality assurance aspects.

Articulation / Credit Transfer This refers to a transfer arrangement between a UK and a local institution. The UK institution agrees to recognise and grant exemptions to the students, based on the subjects taken in the local institution.

International Branch Campus The UK institution sets up an off-shore campus located in another country. Students at the off-shore campus will be awarded qualifications in the name of the UK institution.

UK TNE programmes have been established in Malaysia for more than 30 years. Monitored by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in the UK and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), TNE programmes are trusted internationally. The establishment of a transnational model for Malaysian private higher education was spurred by the global economic crisis. In the 1980s, the global recession caused a major set-back to Malaysia’s rapid economic growth. The responsibility of financing students studying abroad became a heavy burden for many families and the government in Malaysia. Many of the students studying abroad were brought home and placed in local institutions. The sudden inflow of students

11

caused a demand for places in higher education. To resolve this issue, the government started encouraging local private institutions to explore TNE programmes with foreign universities.

Early birds In response to the government’s appeal, the first UK twinning programme was established in Malaysia. By the 1990s, the number of private colleges had increased from 20 (in 1985) to 227. The economic boom in the mid-1990s generated a huge demand for human resources in new industries such as services, trades and the manufacturing sectors. In 1992, polytechnics in the UK were promoted to new university status. Soon after, a consortium of colleges in Malaysia was formed to offer Higher

National Diploma (HND) engineering courses in partnership with a UK institution. All programmes were accredited by the Business Technical Education Council (BTEC) in the UK.

Transnational transition Twinning in Malaysia started with 1+2 programmes: the first year of the degree studied locally, while the latter two years of studies were completed overseas. By 1993, 2+1 twinning programmes emerged. Colleges also started offering full courses in engineering and business. These courses were known as Graduate Diploma Programmes, as private colleges were not allowed to award full degrees then. These catered for students who could not afford

twinning programmes that required them to continue their studies overseas. By the late 1990s, most colleges were developing into comprehensive course delivery institutions, offering academic, professional, semi-professional and internal programmes. New forms of TNE programmes such as credit transfer, twinning and validated courses emerged soon after. Some local colleges started providing internal programmes, for instance, Diploma, that were recognised by overseas universities, allowing students to transfer credits to these institutions.

Did you know? Students pursuing UK qualifications in Malaysia are 4 times as many as Malaysian students studying in the UK.

Š Mat Wright 12

Š Mat Wright

Paradigm shift In 1996, the Private Higher Education Act liberalised and privatised higher education. However in 1997, the country was hit by the Asian financial crisis and the government had to withdraw undergraduate scholarships for overseas studies. Soon there was a surge in student enrolment in local universities. Once again, the government urged private institutions to expand, and foreign universities were invited to open local branches. The price for exit visas was also increased along with the cancellation of tax rebates for parents supporting children studying abroad. To accommodate more students, places in public universities were expanded from 45,000 in 1997 to 84,000 in 1999 through the franchising of matriculation programmes. 3+0 degree programmes

13

were soon introduced in 19 colleges, allowing students to complete their entire course locally. The popularity of 3+0 degree programmes has increased consistently among Malaysian students throughout the years. This is borne out by the fact that the UK is the leading provider of TNE programmes in Malaysia, with more than 58,000 students enrolled in more than 800 courses. Such is the popularity that, of the countries that offer TNE programmes, Malaysia has become one of the largest providers. With the substantial stability of the 3+0 programmes in Malaysia over the years, Malaysia offers unique and attractive education choices to local and international students and is set to be an education hub. This has attracted a number of world-class

universities to establish their branches in Malaysia. In the late 1990s, The University of Nottingham established the first UK university in Malaysia. Iskandar Malaysia in the state of Johor is Malaysia’s premier education hub located in Nusajaya and comprises of foreign branch campuses which includes four UK institutions - Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, University of Reading Malaysia Campus and Marlborough College Malaysia. This ‘multiversity’ concept brings several benefits, not least of which is the fun and stimulating experience of living and studying in such a large and diverse student community.

With these developments over the past decades, Malaysia is quickly becoming an international education hub, tempting Malaysian students to study in-country for an overseas qualification while encouraging international students to come and study here.

Types of UK Qualifications in Malaysia Twinning : 1+2, 2+1

3+0

These programmes are all similar in structure, with part of the course being completed in the local Malaysian institution, and the remainder being finished in the UK partner institution. Graduates receive a degree awarded by the UK partner institution. Essentially, the difference lies in the length of time spent locally and overseas.

The 3+0 programme is an extension of the twinning programme. It is wholly completed in Malaysia. However, some institutions may have an option for students to spend a brief period at the UK partner institutions. The student completes the entire course in Malaysia and earns a degree awarded by the UK institution. There are significant financial savings as the student does not have to bear the cost of travelling and living overseas.

In 2+1 programmes, the first two years of the course are completed in Malaysia, with the final year in the partner institution in the UK. Similarly, in the 1+2, the first year is spent in Malaysia, with the final two years away in the UK. Students study exactly the same syllabus as their counterparts in the UK partner institution, thereby achieving an equal standard of education.

15

Dual / Joint award For both dual and joint degrees, the student completes the entire studies in Malaysia. In the case of dual award, the successful student is awarded two degrees for a single programme; each of the UK and Malaysia institutions makes one formally separate award. As for joint award, the UK institution collaborates with a local Malaysian institution in delivering a joint syllabus, leading to one award conferred by both institutions.

Credit transfer The student begins studying in Malaysia, accumulating three to four credits for each subject taken. The student can then transfer the credits to a participating UK university in order to be exempted from taking certain classes. This reduces the amount of time needed to complete the degree in the UK.

The student is generally not committed to a particular university. In some cases, changing courses without losing accumulated credits is possible.

International Branch Campus The branch campus, established by the UK institution in Malaysia, offers selective programmes from the home campus. In most cases, the essence and culture of the main campus, in terms of teaching and by the UK partner learning standards, academic and research, development and innovation excellence, is enforced. Upon completion of the course at the Malaysia campus, the student is awarded a degree which is indistinguishable from those awarded at the UK campus.

Why Choose a UK Qualification in Malaysia Š Mat Wright

Why Choose a UK Qualification in Malaysia

UK education is synonymous around the world with quality, not just for prospective students but also employers, thus enhancing the employability of our graduates. The high quality is attained through many layers of quality assurance that students in Malaysia can depend on.

World-class Qualifications UK qualifications are recognised and respected around the world. The UK enjoys a reputation for unsurpassed quality education throughout the world. It encourages skills that are relevant, marketable and much sought-after by today’s top companies which means students can look forward to better career prospects and higher potential earnings.

19

Quality Assured Not only does the UK have a centuries-old tradition in education, it is home to an unsurpassed pool of experience and expertise in this field. There are over 3,000 education institutions in the UK, including 130 higher education institutions such as universities and 550 further education, technical and vocational colleges offering over 50,000 courses in UK. Such experience and expertise has established the UK as the world leader in developing quality standards and performance measures for education, which in turn has been extended to its transnational education.

Dynamic Tradition UK’s past achievements are ensuring our present scientific and artistic successes. Ambitious achievers who are seeking a superior education choose the UK because its education is constantly changing while retaining the best of its prestigious 800-year heritage. UK education offers the best from traditions of the past in combination with an up-to-date approach to the latest developments in new fields of study.

Employability Research shows that employers generally prefer graduates who have international experience and they also favour graduates with a UK degree. Many transnational programmes offer the option of studying in the UK for a year, giving students the chance to gain additional international experience, and are therefore highly valued by employers in Malaysia.

Previous studies have reported that most employers ranked a graduate with a UK qualification at the top of their list. Additionally, employers recognise the reputation of the local partner institution offering the UK programme. English is the language of business, science and technology. A UK qualification will reflect to prospective employers that such graduates will possess a high degree of English competency.

Affordability For several reasons, many students prefer to study in their home country or region rather than overseas. This may be so they can live with their families, or retain their current jobs. Often, studying a full-time degree in the home country is significantly cheaper than studying abroad. Costs of studying in a foreign country include visa fees, accommodation and flights.

Cost of Living in Malaysia One significant advantage for students pursuing studies in Malaysia is the relatively reasonable cost of living. Malaysia is one of the least expensive countries in the world to live in. However, it very much depends on the student’s personal lifestyle. On average, a monthly budget of RM1,200 (USD375) will provide a student with a rather comfortable living in Malaysia.

Accommodation Accommodation per month can cost from RM300 (USD94) to RM500 (USD157). The rental varies depending on the geographical area, type of accommodation (e.g. single, twin-sharing), and facilities provided (e.g. with or without airconditioning).

Food The expenses on food are estimated at RM500 to RM700 (USD157 to USD219) monthly. However, it would be more cost effective if a student cooks and shares the cooking expenses with friends.

Transport Travelling to campus and within the city may cost approximately RM30 to RM50 (USD10 to USD16) per month.

Telecommunication The mobile service providers in Malaysia offer very competitive packages for

different needs. Some even provide special packages for students. On average, a student may spend about RM50 to RM80 (USD16 to USD25) per month on telecommunication.

Study Materials The estimated cost of study materials is at RM50 to RM100 (USD16 to USD31) per month, depending on the nature of course and coursework involved. Higher expenses for reading materials can be expected at the beginning of each semester/ term.

Other Expenses A student should set aside additional RM100 to RM200 (USD32 to USD62) for other expenses like social events, toiletries, movies, etc. This amount varies with the personal lifestyle of each student.

Without a doubt, the cost of tertiary education is financially taxing on students. As the cost increases year after year, it is imperative to make the necessary plans and consider available options to help finance a student’s education. There are many financial aids available to students; the most common being scholarships, grants, study loans and waiver of tuition fee by the education institutions. The following are some of the major sources of higher education funding in Malaysia.

Ministry of Education Bursary Starting from 2012, students who obtain 9A+ and above in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) are eligible for bursaries awarded by the Ministry of Education. The bursary covers the cost of one of the recognised pre-university programmes, including the GCE A Levels offered by governmentendorsed higher education institutions in Malaysia before the students pursue their undergraduate degree at local or foreign universities. Selected candidates will be offered a scholarship from the preparatory stage to the undergraduate degree, subject to the conditions set and the Public Services Department’s (PSD) recognition of students’ choice of studies at the tertiary level. www.moe.gov.my

National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN), Ministry of Higher Education

Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship

Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional

Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman (Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation) was set up as a commemoration to Almarhum Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister.

The National Higher Education Fund (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi National, PTPTN) was initiated under the National Higher Education Act 1997 to be fully operational since 1 November 1999. The PTPTN Education Loan Scheme was set up with the aim of providing education loans to students pursuing their studies at local higher education institutions (HEIs). Via this loan, students have the option to either fully or partially pay for their tuition fees and their subsistence for the duration of their study in HEIs. This is in accordance with the government’s mission that no student should be denied entry to a university due to financial constraints.

The scholarship is awarded to students who have completed the first year of a Bachelor’s degree programme at any higher education institution in Malaysia. It covers full tuition fee, monthly allowance, book allowance and annual return air fare to travel back to Sabah or Sarawak for those studying in Peninsular Malaysia or vice versa. www.yayasantar.org.my

The PTPTN Loan offers financial assistance to students based on their level of studies – from diplomas all the way to doctoral degrees. Students are given 5 to 20 years to repay based on the quantum of loan borrowed. Repayment of loan begins six months after the end of the loan period. All applications for PTPTN loans must be done online through the website. www.ptptn.gov.my

It is aimed at financially deserving students with satisfactory academic record, providing them the opportunity of quality private education. The scholarship is in the form of full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the programme completed in Malaysia. www.thesundaily.my

Sin Chew Daily Education Fund The Sin Chew Daily Education Fund acts as an umbrella for higher education institutions that are interested in providing free education in terms of fee waiver, for exceptional and needy students. The objective of the Fund is to provide free education to eligible students leading to the award of Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree qualifications, at local or foreign higher education institutions. The scholarship, in partnership with selected higher education institutions, cover tuition fees and other relevant fees. www.sinchew-i.com

Employees Provident Fund (EPF Account II) – Education Withdrawal Scheme The education withdrawal scheme allows EPF members to withdraw from their Account 2 of the EPF Fund to pay tuition fees for themselves or their children (including step-children and legally adopted children) to pursue further studies at any local or overseas higher education institution. Applicants or their children must have registered to undertake a course at Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree, Doctor of Philosophy or equivalent level. the service such as the government, banks, public listed companies and a whole host of other institutions.

Mention the word ‘accountancy’ and people immediately think of figures, numbers, adding, subtracting, and big lined books covered in dust. To most, accountancy is something dead, old and boring. In actual fact, if you understand the fundamentals, you will find that it is vibrant and can breathe new life into your struggling business. The UK and Malaysia have been producing world-class accounting graduates for the past 50 years. Accountancy qualifications open up many opportunities in different fields of human activity. There is probably no better entry to top jobs in business and industry, management and financial consulting than working to become a highly qualified and experienced accountant. From auditors to business advisors, the role of accountants has changed significantly over the years. With this

expanded role, their education and training have also changed. Apart from learning the traditional book-keeping techniques, they are now required to possess a wider scope of knowledge, for instance economics, management, marketing etc. To achieve this, a degree is not essential but degrees in certain subjects will earn exemptions from one or more parts of the professional accounting examinations. The variety and scope of the accounting profession can be broadly divided into four areas – chartered accountants, certified accountants, public finance accountants and management accountants. The differences among these sub-disciplines are mainly in the type of finance work that is done such as financial strategy, risk management, financial services, auditing, taxation and banking as well as the type of organisation that requires

In a nutshell, students will be trained to perform in an evolving industry and to exacting standards. There is a need for individuals with multi-disciplinary skills who are able and accountable. The UK has the most stringent financial regulations in the world, in a global climate where now even seemingly innocuous transactions come under the microscope. In a rapidly evolving global marketplace, UK educators are matching the pace of change to offer relevant courses to the brightest students. The field of art and design creatively expresses emotions and ideas through tangible objects and illustrations. Though the appreciation of art is often subjective, it is a powerful form of communication that has the ability to provoke, influence and inspire. In the digital era, art and design is integrated into almost every facet of our lives from paintings to advertising, to ordinary household objects. The UK has some of the finest art and design colleges (and best-known alumni) in the world. This has inevitably attracted countless number of students to pursue a degree in Art and Design from all across the globe. The equation is simple really. Art and design graduates are drawn to the notion of studying a UK qualification as it not only has some of the best-known and admired institutions in the world, but these institutions have produced some of the greatest artists and designers, both past and present.

With the tradition of art and design dating back hundreds of years, the UK continues to become a hub for a veritable who’s who of names in this area – people who have reached the pinnacle of their profession in art, fashion, design and animation many times over, from acclaimed designer Jimmy Choo to the ‘Prince of Fashion’ Bernard Chandran. It stands to reason, therefore, that the UK provides good quality courses and an excellent study environment for students in Malaysia. There are a number of programmes to choose from that encompass design areas such as architecture, graphic design and animation. Students will also be equipped with other skill sets such as the ability to understand and interpret art, and the acquisition of business acumen through additional subjects such as philosophy, sociology or history, and business subjects.

Studying for a UK qualification provides you with access to a curriculum and teaching methodology designed to provide you with a high quality education. Aside from the course content, students will also pick up leadership, communication, teamwork and problem solving skills as they work with different individuals and assignments. Typically, students can study subjects such as: CG Arts & Animation Brand packaging design Product Design Digital graphics Fashion & Textile design Malaysia has a demand for people trained in the arts and design. There are multiple industries looking for independent, reliable and forthcoming graduates of the right calibre. A relevant UK qualification presented to a potential employer shows that you have indeed achieved the necessary skills to set yourself apart from the rest and that you are ready for the next challenge.

Business and Management

Be the boss’s boss. Or, at least, be a boss. While you may not be the boss’s boss on day one, organisational gurus with stellar people skills and a head for business will flourish in business administration/management. Creating and perpetuating a successful business has always been a challenge. In this only-the-strong-survive world of modern business - rampant with new, ever-advancing technology, it is essential that managers possess unshakable knowledge, top-notch training, and a serious set of skills. All these set of skills and knowledge can be easily obtained via UK qualifications in Malaysia. The UK holds a rich history of having the world’s leading varsities in producing great minds, entrepreneurs and business tycoons. From Air Asia CEO and owner, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes to Lord Billmoria, the Chief Executive of Cobra Beer, the UK is one of the world’s leading nations in hosting and producing outstanding leaders of calibre in the business and management sector. 37

Management involves “the coordination of human, material, and financial resources to accomplish organisational goals”. A major in business administration/ management will provide That goal – focused training. You will get a thorough grounding in the theories and principles of accounting, finance, marketing, economics, statistics, human resources functions, and decision-making. You will also come away a whiz on how to budget, organise, plan, hire, direct, control, and otherwise manage various organisations. As a major in business administration/ management, expect to work in small groups – no room for wallflowers here. Count on problem-solving, theorising, and math-heavy number-crunching, too. You have your choice of areas in which to concentrate; many institutions require you to focus on one, while others allow you to sample several. Options might include operations management, human resources management, and general management.

Discipline

This major will also get you thinking about issues such as diversity, ethics, politics, and other dynamics that play a role in every work environment. As a manager-to-be, you are required to develop a balance between sensitivity and fairness. With that, you need to be innovative, creative, and a good problem-solver. These qualities, complimented with your winning personality, will put you on a path to successful management in any number of fields. The related majors of a Business and Management degree are: Actuarial Science Economics Entrepreneurship Finance Human Resources Management International Business Marketing Statistics To conclude, the UK is one of the world’s leading nations in providing top notch business and management qualifications. Business and Management graduates qualified with a UK degree are highly sought after by Malaysian employers and companies.

Engineering

Engineering combines the fields of science and mathematics to solve real world problems that improve the world around us. What really distinguishes an engineer is his ability to implement ideas in a cost-effective and practical approach. This ability to take a thought, or abstract idea, and translate it into reality is what separates an engineer from other fields of science and mathematics. Engineers are problem solvers, organisers, communicators, calculators and designers. They are capable of clearly defining a problem and its relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc.) and providing a simple solution. A senior engineer will usually perform less technical work (calculations and designs) but instead focus on managing a project or team of engineers. Without a doubt, the UK is a world leader in engineering. Engineers have remained at the top of the technological food chain and, in many cases, driving it forward. Naturally, such excellence has created a first-class education system, with engineering qualifications born out of sound scientific and technical know-how. Engineering institutions in

the UK are intertwined with industry in a way few other countries can match, conducting research projects worth billions of pounds every year. This research is not limited in any way, with universities engaged in all manner of projects involving aerospace, defence, marine, construction, automotive, nuclear and telecommunications technology. Such options are available to students on TNE courses in Malaysia. The scope of qualifications available here is varied, with courses available in: Electrical and electronic engineering Mechatronic engineering Civil engineering Mechanical engineering Telecommunications Automotive engineering Manufacturing Engineering management Chemical process engineering Communications engineering Meanwhile, something that has been evolving in the UK for some time is the level of qualification young people aspire to achieve. Many students now opt for a four-year Master of Engineering (MEng) degree, which

Discipline

has become the benchmark for graduate engineering positions in the UK. Nevertheless, Bachelors degrees (BEng) are still available. Students can choose to begin a MEng course and transfer to the BEng during their first or second year of study if they desire and vice versa. Similar options are available for students studying TNE courses in Malaysia, where a MEng qualification will really make young hopefuls stand out from the crowd. Added to this, many courses now offer the chance of industrial placements lasting from a few weeks to a year. This allows undergraduates to put theory into practice and gain first-hand experience of their future jobs – and receive a salary. The result is that engineers who have been trained to UK standards are a highly sought-after commodity with a unique skill set, which also makes them desirable to other professions – and other nations. The UK engineering honours degree is a truly global qualification. Useful websites Engineering Council, UK www.engc.org.uk Board of Engineers Malaysia www.bem.org.my

Healthcare

Discipline

The UK has been at the forefront of medical care and research for centuries. The UK’s ingenuity and commitment to this field has not wavered since. Medical professionals trained the UK way have pioneered new techniques and methods of helping those who need help most. In Malaysia, such work has helped, among other things, with curing and preventing debilitating or deadly diseases. Therefore, it is a foregone conclusion that doctors, nurses and medical scientists from the UK are held in high regard the world over for their level of training and depth of knowledge. The UK education system, which is available to Malaysian students through TNE, prepares the next generation for work in the medical profession through a network of first-class training facilities and university hospitals – allowing students to work directly alongside seasoned professionals. Students acquire in-depth theory and practical

39

training, along with a whole host of soft skills which will come as part and parcel of their course. It is an enviable fact, that numerous UK-trained healthcare professionals are poached by other nations, due to their expertise and dedication to the job. Nevertheless, the majority of Malaysians do stay to work in hospitals here in their homeland, providing expert care for those who need it. The Malaysian healthcare industry has been booming in the last two decades due to the development of chemical and biological sectors in the respective industries, thus creating a huge demand for skills and expertise within the domestic healthcare industry. The high quality training and education provided in the UK as well as the strong Commonwealth relations between the UK and Malaysia enable the young local graduates to easily thrive in the Malaysian healthcare industry.

Of course, the main healthcare professions people can identify are doctors and dentists. However, holistic medical care covers a host of other professionals that require specialist training. These courses are all available through TNE programmes in Malaysia, and it is understood that there will be a wider range available in the nottoo-distant future. The crucial role the health professionals play in our society cannot be underestimated, as we are still in short supply of suitably qualified staff to care for those who need their expertise. which, depending upon the course, could be anything from front office operations and food and beverage management, to organising and promoting large concerts.

Today, hospitality is part of the tourism industry and is a major part of the serviced provided by restaurants, hotels and airlines. The goal is to make the customer feel welcomed, comfortable and satisfied. People who work in food, restaurant and travel industries, practise it by providing guests with quality food, drinks and entertainment. Hospitality and tourism is a multidisciplinary field that prepares students with the skills, knowledge and expertise required for management, marketing and operations positions in this expanding global industry. The UK tourism and hospitality industry is one of the most established in the world, with high standards of training and education that are widely respected and in demand. Undergraduate courses in hospitality and tourism typically include a period of

industrial experience, where students get the opportunity to put into practice the theory learned in the classroom. Employers also see great value in this work experience when considering graduates’ employability. Many programmes available in Malaysia through TNE allow students to specialise in one or more particular areas in addition to the general hospitality subjects. These can include: Leisure management Event planning Conference management Facilities Management Tourism Human Resource Management

Hospitality and tourism is a big business in Malaysia, attracting customers from all over the world. In spite of a global recession, malls, parks and hotels continue to be built. They will need suitably qualified staff to run them. As a graduate, you can go on to work in a wide assortment of other service establishments, ranging from restaurants and cafes to integrated resorts, casinos, country clubs, convention centres and even cruise ships.

You will develop your capabilities through the study of basic concepts, problem-solving, decisionmaking, theory and management applications. You will also acquire specialised skills within the industry

Discipline Information and Communications Technology

The UK is the place to be for information and communications technology (ICT) ingenuity and inventions, with new ideas and innovations being developed almost on a daily basis. The UK has been at the leading edge of the computing and information technology (IT) industry since the first computing machine was conceived by English mathematician Charles Babbage in the 1830s. Many developments in integrated circuits, telecommunications and the Internet have been achieved by UK computer scientists. For example, the creation of the World Wide Web – revolutionising the Internet – would not have been possible had it not been for Oxford graduate Sir Timothy BernersLee, who had the idea of merging the Internet and hypertext. As we steadily cruise into the 21st century, the UK has the strongest ICT skills in Europe and the highest number of ICT graduates in the whole of Western Europe. The UK is a strong market for new technology and design with a sophisticated consumer base. UK

41

consumers are early adopters of new technologies and design, making the UK market an excellent ‘test bed’ for ICT companies. Therefore, pursuing a UK qualification in ICT, without a doubt opens up many opportunities for you to strive in a heavily competitive, yet rewarding market. There is also a vast range of ICT courses available right here in Malaysia. Some courses have a strong mathematical focus; others are more vocational in approach, or are more applicationsorientated. Numerous specialisations and combinations are available in ICT courses. These include: Artificial intelligence Business systems Internet and web development Software engineering/ development Systems analysis Mobile computing Multimedia Networking E-business technology and development

There is currently great demand for the skills needed to manage the huge amount of information that organisations collect and the volume of information on the Internet. Hence, institutions’ ICT and mathematics departments often collaborate with Industrial partners. Ensuring that their courses remain practical and their students highly employable. There is much to gain from the study of ICT. It is shaping our world, the way we live, think and make choices. The UK remains a world leader in ICT developments with its rich history of innovation. However, don’t just look back at this success, but look forward and be a part of an exciting future.

Law

Discipline

“A rule laid down for the guidance of an intelligent being by an intelligent being having power over him.” John Austin (English jurist born 1790) - a brief quote describing the function of law. In general, law as a body of official rules and regulations, generally found in constitutions, legislation, judicial opinions, and the like, that is used to govern a society and to control the behaviour of its members, so Law is a formal mechanism of social control. Legal systems are particular ways of establishing and maintaining social order.

The variety and combination of courses you can take, and the different institutions that offer pure law and combined courses make studying a UK law programme extremely flexible. Many institutions have their own dedicated schools of law.

The UK law qualifications are widely recognised and respected in many countries. The skills you learn could be useful in other careers – many management consultants have a legal background. You would certainly not be restricted to one type of work unless you choose to specialise.

There are essentially three types of practising lawyers in Malaysia:

Besides, the Malaysian legal system has striking similarities with the UK. A fellow member nation of the Commonwealth, much of Malaysian law is based on the English Legal System. This makes it easier for students studying a UK law programme to practise law in Malaysia.

Solicitors, who undertake a wide range of legal work, including corporate transactions, transfer of property and litigation. They may or may not specialise.

Those who specialise in litigation appear only in the lower courts (unless they have obtained an additional “higher rights” qualification enabling them to appear in the higher courts).

Barristers/advocates, also known as counsel, who are specialist advocates with unlimited access to the courts.

Legal executives, whose daily work is similar to that of solicitors, but usually work in a particular specialism, such as transferring property, litigation or probate. They work for solicitors, or in the legal departments of public or private organisations.

Mass Communication

Discipline

Studying mass communication can lead to a wide range of jobs. These include: Journalism Marketing Filmmaking Publishing Broadcasting TV, video, multimedia Media research Political research or speech-writing Media is a wide-ranging field which is still growing. Journalism, public relations, advertising, communication studies, information management, broadcasting, TV and film are some of its many subjects. Communication in all its forms is becoming more sophisticated, and demanding a more educated workforce. Interest in mass communication is an area of academic study that is growing steadily as it includes the study of the ways people and groups relay messages to a large audience. A number of education institutions in the UK offer majors in mass communication, and many graduates can find jobs in the news media, advertising or public relations agencies, publishing houses, and research institutes. With the growing popularity of the internet, the demand for writers who can generate content for the online space is growing steadily.

43

The UK leads the way worldwide in the study of media-related subjects, and is highly respected. It has thriving publishing, music, film, and TV industries, with a wealth of linked training courses. This inevitably provides young Malaysians a great opportunity to prove themselves in these industries after pursuing their degree. Moreover, many of these courses also offer practical work experience which is highly valuable for students aiming to gain employment in specific areas of interest. They are thus prepared to fill the ever-increasing demand for mass communication graduates worldwide and especially Malaysia, as it cruises towards a developed nation status by 2020.

You may be in doubt about the significance and prospects of pursuing a path in mass communication. However, as we cruise steadily into the 21st century, the future looks bright. Mass communication is important because it creates a global connection. As mankind grows increasingly reliant on information and technology, the UK programme is the perfect choice for young individuals aiming to obtain a qualification in mass communication.

Sciences

Discipline

The word “science” probably brings to mind many different pictures: a fat textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering, through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest and Einstein’s equations scribbled on a chalkboard. These images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture because science is multi-faceted. Science is both a body of knowledge and a process. In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, but that’s only a small part of the story. Just as importantly, science is also a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the natural world. A UK degree holder in Sciences reflects the recognition, expertise and professionalism needed to pursue great ambitions in the field of science. This is because the UK is one of the world’s

leading faculties in producing quality young graduates from umpteen years. Malaysia currently has a thirst for science. As the country strives for developed nation status by 2020, the need for qualified individuals becomes more acute. There are many roles to play in this development – doctors for hospitals, engineers for infrastructure, teachers for education – but one industry frequently overlooked is that of science.

together to offer first-class science qualifications through TNE, allowing Malaysian youths to get the best start in a cutting-edge career. Through this students can now study subjects such as: Science and technology Biosciences Food science Marine science Our science industry needs suitably qualified staff to keep pushing and developing new and innovative ways in which we can care for ourselves and sustain our existence. Local employers know that applicants with a UK qualification in this field have the prerequisite skills to meet the demands required of them in this expanding industry. A UK qualification will give you a boost in the right direction.

As a result, scientists are helping drive the country forward with the aid of a world-class education provided by UK institutions in Malaysia. The UK has been a world leader in scientific research for hundreds of years with countless discoveries. Recent major breakthroughs have included mapping the human genome, applying stem cell technology, advancing neuroscience and detecting meningitis. The UK and Malaysia have thus come

Time management is crucial both to survive in the college environment and to enjoy college life in its entirety.

” Ali Mustafa Hamid Al-Qaisy

My favourite subjects Chemistry and Biology

Looking ahead I will be going to Hong Kong in September to pursue a degree in Civil and Structural Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. I am excited about experiencing life in a new country and with people of a different culture as I prepare for my career. I will also need to keep up my grades to maintain the scholarship I’ve been offered. It will be a new challenge for me, but it’s one I’m looking forward to.

University life I was elected to be in the student council. The experience enhanced my organizing and inter-personal skills. I enjoyed the interesting conversations with my peers and staff, and the academic environment provided by my college. The activities and education available made my experience splendid.

My advice Make the most out of the college years. It is a time to mature and grow, develop your character, and prepare yourself for the future years. Learn as many soft skills as possible, build your networks and strengthen the academic aspects as well. You will definitely be going the right way!

About your UK-based programme I found the GCE A Level programme academically competent. It is integrated with up-to-date research that makes me even more interested in the subjects I am studying. I liked the division of papers over my three semesters as that allowed me to focus on each paper better.

An important skill to survive in a university/ college Time management; it is crucial to not only survive, but to enjoy college life in its entirety.

Institution Methodist College Kuala Lumpur Course GCE A Level (Edexcel) Stage of course Completed, scored 3A*s in Biology, Physics and Mathematics, 1A in Chemistry What drives me to succeed in my study: The constant efforts put by my family and lecturers and my desire to reward that belief in me. In addition, witnessing war atrocities in my home country, Iraq, made me realise the importance of knowledge and how we can build ourselves, and therefore the world, through it. Three things I’ll never leave home without: Phone, wallet, and book. The best thing about being a university / college student: Enjoy the mixture of nurturing myself academically and through various activities.

Success Story

The interest and passion I have for the subject matter, coupled with the need to be the best I can be, drives me to succeed.

” Anette

About your UK-based programme It is a (2+1) twinning programme with Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, England. The subjects are comprised of examinations and coursework/ assignments which are counted into the final grade. My favourite subjects • Constitutional and Administrative Law • Criminal Law

University life I was very much involved in the KDU Law Society and it had its ups and downs but I am glad that I had the experience because I learned a lot and made wonderful friends whom I cherished very much.

An important skill to survive in a university/ college The ability to wake up early and trudge through nightmarish morning traffic to make it for your 9am class. I have yet to master this skill. Looking ahead I want to do the best I can and hopefully come out on top of my class and perhaps go on to work at a law firm. I also want to specialise in Human Rights Law later on in my career. My future goal would be to become a writer or get involved in books publishing. My advice Work hard, but play hard too. Enjoy your university years and let them be the years that you want to remember.

Institution KDU University College Course Bachelor of Laws LLB (Hons) (Oxford Brookes University (2+1 Twinning)) Stage of course Second year What drives me to succeed in my studies: I enjoy what I learn. Studying Law teaches me to rationalise situations in a systematic and logical manner. It can be tedious at times, but I readily welcome the challenge. The interest and passion I have for the subject matter, coupled with the need to be the best I can be, drives me to succeed. Three things I’ll never leave home without: My mobile phone, a bottle of water and my wallet. The best thing about being a university / college student: It is the honeymoon stage in life where you are allowed to bungle up and make colossal mistakes, and no one can chastise you (too much) for it. Now is the only time in my life where I am free to enjoy the privileges of being a young adult without the responsibility of working full time and supporting myself. I am free to learn and make mistakes and absorb as much as I can...and still have fun.

Success Story

Having the right qualification from a highly recognised, well respected, and prominent university means better chances of securing an interview.

Johanna Ramli About your UK-based programme Studying with the University of London International Programmes is ideal for someone who wants to remain in Malaysia while studying the British way. I received subject guides directly from the University itself which detailed the course content and ensured that I studied the same topics as my peers in the UK and around the world. My favourite subjects Auditing was my favourite subject. My auditing class inspired me to pursue audit as a career choice. My lecturer at HELP was interesting, informative and shared real life audit stories with us from her experience working as an auditor. I was particularly attracted by the fact that auditing allows me to draw upon different areas of my study, from accounting, financial management to financial reporting. All these areas are interesting in their own right but even more so when they are integrated within auditing. University life HELP University, the local institution I attended. Had dedicated tutors with expertise and experience. They knew their topics inside and out, making learning intellectually stimulating and straightforward.   I enjoyed  the independence given to  me -  in terms of planning my studies in my own time.  The course was tough but I very much enjoyed it. At HELP I participated in lectures and tutorials. Having to write essays and complete various exercises and case studies each week that were then discussed at length in tutorials was

very challenging, but hugely rewarding as I was able to get a much more indepth understanding of the topic and discuss any problems I had with it. The tutorials are designed to push you, but are normally enjoyable.

Institution University of London International Programmes/HELP, Malaysia

I was involved in putting together the Department of Economics’ newsletter at HELP.

Stage of course Graduated

An important skill to survive in a university/ college I recommend that you combine individual studying with some peer group studies. Also, it is a good idea to practise past year examination questions in order to get a feel for what is expected of you. Looking ahead I think having a University of London degree immediately puts your CV at the  top of the pile, especially in  the Malaysian environment where having the right degree or qualification from a highly recognised, well respected, and prominent  university means better chances of securing an interview. I gained my first job after graduation with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Kuala Lumpur, and subsequently moved to PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK. I believe that having a UK degree helped me to get my job here in the UK.  My advice First of all, choose a degree you are interested in and focus. I would definitely recommend studying for a University of London degree. The University of London name and reputation carries a lot of weight and gives you an edge in job applications.

Course BSc Accounting & Finance

What drives me to succeed in my study: I was inspired by my father who wanted me to obtain a UK degree. My dad’s dream was to send me to the London School of Economics and Political Science, one of the Colleges of the University of London. However, the tuition fees were much lower if I studied locally so the University of London International Programmes was perfect for my circumstances. It allowed me to get a degree from a highly recognised, well-respected university while studying “off campus” – thus combining quality of education and convenience of location. Three things I’ll never leave home without: iPhone, house keys and common sense!. The best thing about being a university / college student: The best part about the University of London International Programmes is that you get to obtain a University of London degree at a fraction of the cost compared to if you were to study in the UK itself. However, having said that, you probably miss out on the life experience of living in the UK. However, I have no regrets with the route I took because I now have a job in the UK. Had I not obtained a University of London degree and landed a good job, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to get a transfer here to the UK.

Success Story

For every Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerbergs who dropped out to do something revolutionary, there are thousands who succeeded their studies and became someone of worth, contributing to society.

Kenneth Chung

About your UK-based programme The University of London External LL.B has been a brilliant experience. The course has taught me the importance of self-sufficiency, critical thinking, and an appreciation for Law. I recommend it to any aspiring law students that is up for an intellectual challenge and wants to be associated with academic and personal excellence.

won’t all be done the way you like it. So it’s up to you to roll with the punches! I used to think that I knew best; whether it was how classes should be conducted, what I wanted for a career, etc. It took be a couple of servings of humble pie to make me realise that there are plenty of people that has great advice to give you, only if you have the humility to listen to them, and the vision to apply it!

Institution KDU University College

My favourite subjects Definitely Company Law. Being sort of a stickler for the rules myself (I was a prefect in high school), I loved learning about the various mechanisms of corporate governance and the ways that directors and the companies themselves were accountable to shareholders and stakeholders. It’s so cool to learn about the various ways to sue the pants off faceless evil corporations!

Looking ahead I’m looking forward to pursuing the Bar in the UK this fall! And I’m most excited to find a profession that can merge my passions for the public sector (especially education) with the conducive and fast paced (and well remunerated ^^) environment a corporate position provides. But all this is just a plan drawn in the sand; for all I know, maybe politics could be fun!

What drives me to succeed in my studies: The fact that all of what I do now, trying to get good grades, learning all I can in my course of study, will resonate in the future. Whether in getting my first job, networking with others, or even teaching my own children, I am confident that working hard and doing well in studies will provide a stepping stone for a brighter future! For every Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerbergs who dropped out to do something revolutionary, there are thousands who succeeded in their studies and became someone of worth, contributing to society. I intend to join those ranks and make my mark in the world!

University life KDU University College has really helped me shine. I had a lot of support from the staff and the institute itself. From networking sessions to sponsoring my participation in external competitions, I have grown tremendously from the amount of investment KDU has poured into its student’s holistic development. I even obtained an internship placement at PriceWaterhouseCoopers as a direct result of KDU’s participation in a dinner at the British High Commissioner’s residence! As I prepare to leave KDU in the fall to study abroad, I will leave with many fond memories of the lessons and the people I’ve met here! An important skill to survive in a university/ college Adaptability! When you are in an institute of higher education, things

85

My advice Be ready to shed the baggage and preconceptions from wherever you were before. When you are pursuing a degree, start taking every opportunity that comes your way, whether something you love or something you have never tried before, and do everything to exceed expectations. The world is your oyster now. The choice is yours to either drizzle it with lemon juice and gobble it down, or leave it sitting there until it’s too late to savour. Remember, a lot of people can get a higher education. It’s about making the right choices: whether its picking an institute with a good track record, joining a club and getting out there, or making the decision pick up and develop a certain skill. These choices will make the difference between being mediocre and being exceptional!

Course Bachelor of Laws LLB (Hons) (University of London International Programme) Stage of course Third year

Three things I’ll never leave home without: My iPad 2, my Watch, and my Aviator Sunglasses. The best thing about being a university / college student: The amount of exposure you get! I used to think that stuff like high profile lawsuits and world issues were secondary to what was on MTV. All that changed when I was in my degree program. I was exposed to plenty of opportunities to rub elbows with the crème de la crème of the corporate sector, and even the Government, learning about and discussing issues that had an impact on our world. I have never been more inspired to get out there and follow in my mentors’ footsteps!

Success Story

As a university student, we should always balance ourselves between fun and studies.

About your UK-based programme I am taking BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering which is a dual-degree programme in association with Staffordshire University, UK – a result of the long-established partnership between APU and Staffordshire University. It provides me with a degree which is internationally benchmarked and assures me that this course is wellrecognised throughout the world. My favourite subjects Communication Skills & Mathematics (I’m a nerd who loves to talk!) University life There is only one word to describe: AWESOME. Throughout the 3 years in APU, I have achieved unlimited personal goals which I never thought I would achieve when I was in high school. I have organized and participated in activities with different roles such as Event Manager, Emcee, dancer and so on. I have discovered my potential further and day by day, it is making me a more confident person. I was exposed to the working environment earlier than my peers, as I am working as Student Ambassador in APU. This makes me a more matured and well-prepared person for future challenges that I am going to undertake in my career. Besides that, I got to know people from different parts of the world, such as Iran, China, Sri Lanka, India, Djibouti, Pakistan, Russia, Korea, Mauritius, Mongolia, Maldives, Kazakhstan and so on. This opens my eyes wider to learn to accept and treasure different cultures and exposure while I am in Malaysia.

where I go or what I do in the future, I will definitely look back to this experience as one of the happiest and memorable moments in my life. An important skill to survive in a university/ college Appropriateness in time delegation. Doing the right thing at the right time is important, especially when you are an active student, who participates in activities planning, who works part-time, and who has to rush for assignments and same time prepare for exams. I survived because I have drawn a clear-cut line between my studies, my activities, my personal life and my work duties. Looking ahead Next year is my graduation and I am looking forward to stepping into working life. I do not have a specific company that I wish or not wish to join, nor the job position that I am looking for. But I am very sure with my qualification with a dual-degree certificates and my experience will make an outstanding CV to the employers out there. At this point, I will still strive for improvement and success in my life. No matter how many years from now, I see myself as a person who is always open to possibilities and opportunities to learn. I believe that learning never ends.

Kok Cheng Mun Institution Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) Course BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering (Staffordshire University) Stage of course Second year What drives me to succeed in my study: The strong feeling of satisfaction and confidence when excellent results are achieved and I am getting closer to my dream career. Besides that, the environment, lecturers and facilities provided at APU ease my burden to score well in my studies. Three things I’ll never leave home without: My mobile phone, purse and laptop. The best thing about being a university / college student: Never stop discovering your limits, opportunity to participate and organise awesome activities and events, expand your friendship circle and platform for networking.

My advice Study hard and play hard! As a university student, we should always balance ourselves between fun and studies. It does not mean that you have to be a nerd to get good results, or to be a hyperactive person to participate in activities! When you do the right thing at the right time, you can be a hyperactive nerd, who has both excellent results and active participation in hand!

My university life changed me into a better person than I was. No matter

My desire to achieve my dream drives me to succeed. I believe the drive to succeed comes from within, the passion that an individual has for life itself.”

About your UK-based programme My UK-based programme is a double honours degree that allows one to choose a major alongside the core of business management. This programme differs from the other courses as it opens a student to all the various aspects of the programme. I am majoring in Finance but the course has also taught me about marketing and human resource. My favourite subjects My favourite subject would have to be international finance as it allowed me to learn about finance on a global scale. Moreover, I had the opportunity to learn about the history of monetary value. Additionally, international finance has taught me about efficient market hypothesis which has now become my favourite topic to read up on. University life University life is definitely a rite of passage. One learns to grow and be independent. University life is a stepping stone achieving one’s desired dreams. University life also provides an individual with the chance to socialise and form friendships that might last a lifetime.

An important skill to survive in a university/ college An important skill to possess in University is the ability to ask questions without having any repercussions. Many students have fear in asking questions. In order to survive, students need to be able to raise questions that will inevitably help them. Looking ahead There is only one direction now and that is to move forward. Dreams are created to be chased. My dream is to own my own marine and reptile reserve. My advice My advice would be to be yourself and to be 100% passionate in everything you undertake.

Nadiya Nair Institution KDU University College Course Double Honours Degree in Business Management and Finance (Keele University) Stage of course Third year What drives me to succeed in my studies: My desire to achieve my dream drives me to succeed. I don’t believe in being competitive as it indicates one’s desire to succeed is only caused by witnessing another’s failure. I believe the drive to succeed comes from within, the passion that an individual has for life itself. Three things I’ll never leave home without: Me, myself and I....haha and I usually take my phone, purse and lip gloss. Just the daily necessities. The best thing about being a university / college student: Being a university student is a privilege. I am very fortunate to be able to study in a university. The best thing about being a student is being able to explore the various aspects of life, from the knowledge aspect to even the social interactions of life.

Institution International Medical University

Looking ahead Opportunities to develop the core values and adapt them to the dynamic profession of medicine that enable me to succeed as a valuable member of the developing medical field.

What drives me to succeed in my study: I set my goals clearly and I strive for them. I have unrelenting curiosity and a strong desire to seek out new information rather than to merely rely on what is written in the books. I do not study for grades but for fun of learning and gaining new knowledge.

My advice Do remember that your studies should not be everything. Instead, use the precious time and opportunity that you have to gain new experiences, learn soft skills and make new friends.

Three things I’ll never leave home without: Mobile phone, purse and watch The best thing about being a university / college student: The freedom to select courses that I enjoy and the huge network that I gained. College life can be pretty stressful, so it’s important to be able to manage time wisely.

About your UK-based programme Provides me with a comprehensive and holistic view on the field I’m studying. My favourite subjects Criminal Law University life A lot of fun. My college provides adequate facilities both for studying and recreation. I get to meet new people and polish my ‘public relations’ skills.

An important skill to survive in a university/ college Being versatile. College life can be pretty stressful, so it’s important to be able to manage time wisely. Looking ahead I’d like to spend my final year in the UK to better understand the ways of the law, and perhaps even continue with my masters there. Success Story

You have to be proactive to achieve your goals and most importantly have a passion for a purpose.

About your UK-based programme It is a three-year program. Law is an extensive subject ranging from archaic subjects such as land law to more contemporary subjects such as human rights law. It is very stimulating as I can see many real life situational applications to my studies. One of the most interesting aspects of law is the challenge of researching it, interpreting it, and not only using it but being able to be critical and analytical of it. My favourite subjects At the moment my favourite subject is Civil Liberties. We are studying civil liberties in the context of the European Convention on Human Rights. I enjoy this subject because what we learn about is essentially human rights laws and their applications in not only the past (the Irish Republican Army), but also very recent contexts (Iraq War). We learn about varying types of rights – torture, slavery, religion and sexuality. As you can tell I have a deep passion for human rights. University life University life can be very engaging and equally it can be very mundane. It all depends on your level of participation and interest. I chose to be very active in the Students’ Union by being elected as the International Students’ Officer. This meant that, aside from my law degree, for the first term of my second year I had up to four hours of meetings a week not including the time I spent preparing for the meetings and planning events or campaigns. However, this turned out to be a very fulfilling experience. Don’t get me wrong – during this time I was under a lot of stress and felt drained but I have no regrets. This experience was one of the best in my life so far. I had the opportunity to meet amazing people from across the globe and I learnt so much from them and from the job.

91

An important skill to survive in a university/ college Being open to new experiences and being sociable. Most people will tell you to be disciplined, well-organised or hardworking. Don’t get me wrong, these are great skills to get that 2:1 or 1st you’ve been aiming for but I believe that one of the most important things of your University experience is meeting people and broadening your horizon. You will never ever have the opportunity to engage these this many people from such a variety of backgrounds ever again. Looking ahead At the moment I am rather conflicted between commercial law and human rights law. I guess you can imagine the reasons why. However, I am almost certain that I would like to practice law in Malaysia after completing the BPTC in the UK. There truly is no place like home. This may vary with each individual but to me family and friends are very important. As a friend once told me: different strokes for different folks. My advice Relax and be passionate. This may seem like two very different things but it’s important that you are calm and composed when making the leap to University especially in a foreign country. Things are different and you have to be flexible to change and accept things as they are. Equally, you have to be proactive to achieve your goals and most importantly have a passion for a purpose. It can be a passion for anything but as long as you believe in yourself and you are willing to seize the opportunity you will do well. Whatever happens I think you’ll do just fine.

Ushana Institution University of Reading Course Bachelor of Laws LLB(Hons) Stage of course Second year What drives me to succeed in my study: A good paycheck. Haha, well in all seriousness I thoroughly enjoy reading law. I find various aspects of law interesting, from human rights and public law where we learn about the oppression of individual rights in its many forms, to contract law and revenue law where lawyers exercise a level of ingenuity in circumventing the “system”. I have to admit however, the prospect of a good paycheck isn’t a bad motivator either. Three things I’ll never leave home without: A sense of humour, my wits and my iPhone for when both of those fail me. The best thing about being a university / college student: The opportunity to meet various individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and the opportunity to get involved in almost anything. In my first year I joined five clubs – Mountaineering, Caving, Rowing, Law Society, International Society - and I was a course rep for law through the Students’ Union. I had the opportunity to speak to and learn from many individuals and it truly was an amazing experience!

The future is going to be a very interesting journey with lots of opportunities leading to a fruitful career.

About your UK-based programme Studying in a UK-based postgraduate programme as opposed to local universities, taught me a lot about UK education system – how it differs and the benefits of it. It definitely broadened my views about the culture and approaches used in UK. My favourite subjects During my undergraduate studies in Malaysia, my favourite subject was the Evolution of Brain and Behaviour. From this module, I was able to learn all about the evolutionary perspective on certain areas of research in Psychology such as attractiveness, parenting behaviour, hormonal influences on behaviour and violence, etc. Also, my other favourite subject was our final year project. This was because I had the opportunity to apply all of the practical skills and the theories I had learned over the first two years of my undergraduate study, and to be able to come up with a research proposal, the design of an experiment, and the collection of data, and finally the outcome of the whole project. It gave me a sense of accomplishment in the end of the entire degree. University life My university life is challenging, satisfying, busy, and full of surprises. It’s all for the better, I mean, without the constant push, or the opportunities to keep myself busy consistently, I don’t think I’d be able to enjoy it as much as I would like or learn as much. So, all in all, I guess the word I’m looking for is ‘rewarding’.

Yvonne Teoh An important skill to survive in a university/ college It’s not so much a skill but an attitude – staying optimistic. I think when one is in a university, there will always be moments where you’ll be facing some complications or you’ll start questioning the choices you made, and the ability to always look forward, to move on when one fails, and to just remember how fortunate we are to be studying in such an institution. Looking ahead To be honest, I’m not much of a planner, but right at this moment, I think the future is going to be a very interesting journey with lots of opportunities leading to a fruitful career, and lots of travelling around, I hope. My advice To remember that everything will be alright in the end, as long as we keep on trying, and striving to make the best out of every situation, and to remember that there’s always something to learn, regardless how insignificant the event is.

Institution The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus Course PhD in Psychology Stage of course First year What drives me to succeed in my study: My passion in the field of research. I’m working on retro diction which is a study of people’s behaviours and to understand the cause behind any particular behaviours. Also I love the idea of being able to further investigate into the areas of human behaviour which I’ve always been curious about. Three things I’ll never leave home without: My camera, laptop, and iPod. The best thing about being a university / college student: I guess the best thing about being a university student is the opportunities and chances that you could find and get, not only in terms of education, but also the extracurricular activities, such as organising fundraising events, sports-related events, attending conferences and seminars by speakers from different backgrounds, and ultimately meeting people who are from different countries and cultures from all over the world. I was also part of the pilot batch of Nottingham Advantage graduates, a programme which is designed to make students more viable employees. This programme involves participation in extracurricular activities and also development of competencies and skills crucial for graduate employability.

About your UK-based programme The University of Hertfordshire provides excellent online studynet where I can access e-journals and ebooks to source information for my assignments. Without any doubt, the lecturers have vast experience in delivering the modules efficiently. My favourite subjects Contemporary Issues in Healthcare is my favourite subject and without doubt other modules such as Management and Leadership have given me deeper insight into management of people. University life University life is a very challenging one. It requires a great deal of self-discipline to plan, and set priorities and one has to set a balance between “leisure and work”. It does give me a sense of being a student again and to take my studies seriously in order to achieve my mission.

An important skill to survive in a university / college Having undergone a vigorous mental activity, it is important to discipline oneself in time management to ensure deadlines are met. Looking ahead As learning is a lifelong process, I wish to pursue my PhD level in order to achieve my dream to be a knowledgeable and skilful educator, as well as to share my advanced knowledge with my fellow students. My advice As I am currently majoring in nursing, I would like to advise nurses in Malaysia not to stop learning but to continue advancing their education in order to improve the standards of nursing in Malaysia.

Healthcare

Stage of course Second year What drives me to succeed in my study: It has always been my vision to excel in the nursing profession and at the same time, my personal development in life. As it has always been said, learning is lifelong; therefore, I aspire to excel personally and professionally. With the vision in mind, I persevere to increase my knowledge in nursing as well as the healthcare systems and services that can be provided in Malaysia. Besides, I can share this knowledge with the nurses and other healthcare professionals so that the services can be enhanced through teamwork. Three things I’ll never leave home without: I will never leave home without my handphone as it is essential keeping in touch with friends and coursemates as it is a link for us to update our knowledge with regards to matters related to the course. I would also need my diary to remind me of my daily activities. Lastly, I can’t go without my driving licence as it is essential for me to get to my destination such as the library of the University College where I study. The best thing about being a university / college student: The Master in Contemporary Healthcare is a very good course because it provides me with advanced knowledge on health issues, clinical decision making, management and leadership development. The academic writing of the course assignments taught me how to think critically and analytically. It has also enhanced my knowledge on writing research paper. I am glad that I have taken this course.
