New Ideas in Education A conversation with Dr. Rahat Naqvi

New Possibilities for Our Children: Language as a Cultural Amplifier Thursday, November 18, 2010 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm (reception to follow) Room 179, Education Classroom Block

Changing Education for a Changing World Dr. Rahat Naqvi’s research agenda responds to the push for a more nuanced understanding of the cognitive and sociocultural complexities often faced by language minority children when becoming literate in a new language. Researchers have highlighted the need for a robust research agenda focused on the development of language and literacy interventions that serve as cultural amplifiers. They argue that these interventions should extend, rather than constrain, children’s repertoires of practice. Naqvi’s research embraces the notion of metalinguistic awareness and how a child’s language and culture can help develop literacy through a variety of initiatives building on multilingual resources.

Dr. Rahat Naqvi is an Associate Professor in Second Language Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education, University of Calgary. She holds a PhD in Didactics of Languages and Cultures from the Université de la Sorbonne, Paris. She has taught in various international settings that include the National Institute for Oriental Languages, Université de la Sorbonne, Paris and most recently at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. Dr. Naqvi is the Associate Director of the Language Research Center at the University of Calgary. Her focused fields of expertise are primarily in language and literacy pedagogy, identity issues and emergent literacy. In 2009, Dr. Naqvi was chosen to participate in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program sponsored by the State Department.
