Welcome to the Educate Plus certified training program for 2019. We have been delighted with the response to this program. By the end of this year’s sessions over 400 members will have completed at least one of our courses. This reinforces our belief that practitioners working in Advancement need to be trained and implementing leading practice principles. We hope you find the sessions enjoyable, informative and aspirational. As these are adult learning experiences, we encourage you to contribute and network with your fellow trainees, as we can all learn from each other. PRESENTERS Jeff Buchanan

F.Edplus Senior Consultant, AskRIGHT Jeff moved from the teaching profession into a Development Officer role in 1999. Following a good year in this role he accepted a position at another school to become Director of Development for 5 years and then into consulting in 2005, moving to a role as a Senior Consultant at AskRIGHT in 2007.

At AskRIGHT Jeff’s clients have included universities, schools, health research organisations, aged care and religious organisations, and international aid organisations. He has worked with fundraising teams of just one person through to comprehensive programs with 20 or more staff and volunteers. He works with clients to build their capability to achieve better results across a range of fundraising activities, improve their donor/prospect engagement outcomes, and shift their thinking and behaviour to be more donor-centric. “I enjoy teaching people, challenging their thinking and developing better ways to bridge the divides that can impact good fundraising practice and productive fundraising culture.”

Russell Davidson

F.Edplus, Director of Development & Alumni Relations, Haileybury Russell commenced in his role at Haileybury, Australia’s largest independent School with over 4500 students, in 2008. Prior to his appointment, Russell was National Business Manager for leading childcare and events company, Camp Australia. Presently, Russell is responsible for implementing a diverse range of services, communication techniques, activities and opportunities for an assorted group of over 16000 members of the Old Haileyburians Association (OHA). The OHA is widely recognised as one of the leading alumni organisations in Australia.

In addition, Russell has overseen the Haileybury Foundation, the major fundraising platform for scholarships, building and library programs at the School.During the eight year existence of the Foundation, Russell has successfully implemented a strong Scholarship and donor recognition program as well as a Staff Giving and Class Giving campaigns. Russell comes from an educational background, having previously taught at Haileybury for 7 years with one of those years spent on exchange in Toronto, Canada. Russell is President of the Educate Plus Vic/Tas Chapter and is a Fellow of Educate Plus.


PRESENTERS Anne Robinson

BA LLB (Hons) FAICD TEP Founder, Prolegis Lawyers Anne Robinson AM is founder and a partner of Prolegis Lawyers, provider of legal services to the for-purpose sector, charities and philanthropists. She has advised on corporate law, governance, charitable trust structuring and tax issues for a wide range of Australia’s charitable institutions, and has acted for independent schools, churches and Christian charities for over 20 years. Anne also has over 30 years’ experience in governance of charitable organisations, and has sat on the boards of independent schools, hospitals and international aid organisations, including being a Director and then Board Chair of World Vision Australia for 12 years until 2012. She is now Chair of Bible Society Australia.

Anne was Deputy Chair of the Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council and a member of the NFP Tax Concession Working Group. Anne established and has been a director of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand from 2009, and is now a member of the Law Council of Australia Not-for-Profit and Charities Group Executive Committee and the ATO Not-for-profit Stewardship Group.

Luke Hall

B.Com LLB (Hons) Associate, Prolegis Lawyers Luke has experience working in a wide range of commercial matters, including charity establishment and governance issues, corporate restructures, advising on tax concessions and deductable gift recipient (DGR) endorsement. Luke has worked in government, not-for-profit and charity sectors since 2003, including managing a religious charity for five years. He has served as a Presbyterian church elder and on the Church’s Committee of Management (as Secretary and Treasurer). Luke was admitted in 2006, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws with honours from the University of Sydney.

Luke is Deputy Chairman of two independent girls’ schools, in Sydney and Armidale.


John Kramer

F.Edplus, CFRE Senior Consultant Philanthropy John Kramer is a highly respected fundraiser whose knowledge of his craft surpasses most. His deep understanding of fundraising allows John to speak the language of Board Members, Heads, Business Managers and Advancement Staff while appreciating the value volunteers can bring to organisations and advancement programs.

His career in fundraising commenced 28 years ago and John has built an extensive knowledge of philanthropy – from the psychology of giving to donor acquisition, to innovations in cultivation and stewardship. With a track record of achieving outstanding results on Capital Campaigns and large acquisitions, John’s holistic approach combines the science of philanthropy with the altruistic. John holds a Diploma of Fine Art, a Bachelor of Education, is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), and a Fellow of Educate Plus. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Trevor Wigney Award for Outstanding Leadership, Mentoring and Service to Educate Plus and twice pastpresident of the SA/NT Chapter of Educate Plus.

Margo Bastow

FFIA F.Edplus, Director of Community Relations, Santa Maria College Margo is the Director of Community Relations at Santa Maria College where she has been working for over three years. Margo previously worked at Launceston Church Grammar School for 14 years. At the same time she ran her own marketing consultancy where she managed a variety of brand’s marketing with a focus on social media.

Prior to entering the education sector Margo worked in the tourism and hospitality industry and had the pleasure of working with brands such as Novotel, Sheraton, Grand Chancellor and P&O Resorts. Margo is passionate about marketing and is a change advocate, she believes don’t wait for change, create the change.



F.Edplus, M.EdLead, MACE Registrar, St Andrew’s Cathedral School Bruce is the current Registrar and a member of the School Executive Committee at the St Andrew’s Cathedral School in Sydney. He is former President of the Educate Plus NSW/ACT Chapter as well as a former Educate Plus Board Member. Bruce has taught mathematics in schools for over 30 years, working in public, Catholic systemic and Independent schools. In the span of his career, he has also held Year Coordinator, Head of Department and Curriculum positions.

With eleven years of experience in development roles, Bruce brings a rich set of skills and experience in education to our advancement programs. At Educate Plus, Bruce played a key role to help establish the Certified Advancement Training Programs, including the initial set up of the Admissions Training. Over the past ten years, he has presented at three Educate Plus International Conferences and also frequently presents at Chapter Conferences.

Neil McWhannell

CEO Educate Plus, JP GAICD Neil is the current CEO of Educate Plus. Prior to his appointment he held the position of the foundation CEO of HeartKids Australia. At HeartKids, he transformed the organisation and was awarded the Equity Trustee CEO of the Year Award for first year achievers and runner up in the 2009 Australian Fundraiser of the Year Awards. Neil was also the recipient of a Harvard Business School minor scholarship. Neil initially came from an educational background where he was principal at some of the leading independent schools in Australiasia.

In his time in Educate Plus he has transformed the organisation, almost tripling membership, whilst developing a significant value proposition that now includes training programs. He has many interests and is a positive contributor to his community. He serves as a Justice of the Peace, is the immediated Past President of his local Rotary Club and has been State Chairman and National Board Member for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.


Kristie Welsh

BBusMan, BJ, M.EdPlus Director of Marketing & Communications, Brisbane Boys’ College Growing up on the Sunshine Coast, Kristie furthered her education at the University of Queensland, completing a Bachelor of Business Management (Marketing) and Bachelor of Journalism. Her career has taken her from a newsroom, to in-house and agency roles and her own consultancy business providing strategic marketing, communications and public relations advice to a client base spanning the education, technology, FMCG, health and property sectors.

Kristie ultimately found her passion in the independent education sector following seven years in senior roles at the private Bond University, and in 2015 joined the School Executive of Ipswich Girls’ and Junior Grammar as Director of Enrolments and Community Relations. As the current Director of Marketing and Communications for Brisbane Boys’ College, Kristie has overall strategic and operational responsibility for the development, direction and control of the College’s marketing, communications and public relations.

John Bacon

F.Edplus Dean of Admissions, Somerset College John joined the staff at Somerset College in 2003 from Melbourne Girls Grammar School. He has been working in school admissions since 1994 when he worked at Camberwell Grammar School. From 1997 to 2001 he worked in admissions at Trinity Anglican School in Cairns.

At Somerset College John is responsible for the admissions process for all students from Pre-Prep to Year 12. He also oversees the work of the College Foundation and the Somerset Alumni Association. Prior to working in Admissions John taught Chemistry and Physics at The Southport School and Hamilton College in Western Victoria.
