Our courses Our courses have evolved over the years to provide students with an unforgettable summer experience, balancing learning with leisure and recognising that making friends and gaining confidence go hand-in-hand with the acquisition of language skills.

English and Activity Our English and Activity courses for ages 8-17 have a wide appeal, combining English tuition with sports, excursions and a lively social programme. English is taught in small classes of 12-15 students and classes incorporate elements of drama, music, information technology, art and filmmaking to provide variety and a context for the application of language skills, especially through speaking and listening.

Soccer and English Our Soccer and English courses, run in association with Chelsea FC Foundation, are open to boys aged 8-16 and combine soccer coaching with English classes, a key attraction being a coaching session at Chelsea FC’s own training ground in Surrey and visits to Stamford Bridge and Wembley stadiums in London.

Global Young Leaders Our Global Young Leaders course, endorsed by The English-Speaking Union, is ideally suited to those interested in world issues and in perfecting their English and critical thinking skills through debating. The course is open to ages 14-17 and is aimed at students with an upper-intermediate to advanced level of English. Tailor-made courses are also available to native speakers booking as a group.

Global Young Leaders Course Boys and girls aged 14-17 Our Global Young Leaders course, now in its fifth year, combines English lessons with debating and critical thinking. The course is aimed at students with an upper-intermediate to advanced level of English and any level of public speaking and debating experience. The public speaking and debating activities are led by our mentors who are experienced debating coaches from top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. This two-week programme combines English, public speaking and debating to improve confidence in written and spoken English, and to provide a deeper understanding of important world issues.

The unique feature of this course is that it combines English classes, taught by qualified specialists, with debating and critical thinking seminars, workshops and competitive debates led by highly skilled mentors. Using this approach, students are mentored in developing arguments, applying persuasive techniques and expressing their ideas to convince an audience.

I had a really great time at Global Young Leaders. The classes, the competitions and the excursions were fun and I really hope to go back next year. I had the best time of my life in those two weeks. Debora, Switzerland.

Three hours of English for debating per day Three hours of debating lessons and activities per day Theme-related seminars and guest speakers Varied social programme: disco, quiz, talent show Two full day excursions per week to: London, Oxford and Cambridge

Each day, lessons take global themes such as politics, ethics, economics and law, providing the framework within which students can explore the policies and ideologies that influence the world around them. The international perspective brought to bear by our students, based on their diverse backgrounds, enriches the understanding of the group as a whole.

In debating lessons, students take part in group discussions, speaking activities and leadership exercises to develop key public speaking skills including structuring arguments, choosing appropriate styles and using rhetorical strategies. All of these are practised through competitive debates, after which mentors provide detailed feedback to individual students.

English lessons focus on vocabulary and grammar and by analysing different media sources, including texts, speeches and interviews, different opinions are examined whilst reading and listening skills are improved. All English teachers are suitably qualified and work closely with debating mentors to ensure that debating and English lessons are closely integrated.

In the evening, students relax and mix in social activities run by our activity leaders, including sports options and events such as quiz nights, discos and talent shows.

Social events Part of the special atmosphere of Our World English Schools comes from the close friendships which develop between students. Many of them keep in touch after the summer is over, and many come back year after year. The wide range of nationalities provides a fascinating insight into other cultures.

After a full day of English lessons, activities and sports, students and staff have the opportunity of relaxing together in the evening. Each week there is a disco, barbecue, music and drama night and a sports competition, but also some free time for the students to spend in the comfort of their boarding houses, at the swimming pool or in the school’s extensive grounds. There are special events, too, such as Blind Date, Quiz Night and the highly enjoyable Talent Show in which teachers, students and Our World staff find themselves on stage.

The Talent Show was amazing. I had so much fun, especially watching the staff take part. Ahmed, UAE
