A propósito de la composición sinfónica

Liu Xie, escritor chino que vivió entre los años 466 y 521 de nuestra era,enseñaba que el corazón - o la pasión en términos más modernos - era el principio fundamental de la literatura y por extensión del arte en general. Pero talgradodeexpresión,decíaél,debía estarcontenido,encerrado,aprisionado,maniatado,encadenadoyasegurado férreamente en la forma artística. De allí que él hablara de la composición literaria como del "cincelado de dragones", el acto mágico de congelar en la forma artística el drama del dragón inquieto. Nada es más intensoque undragón cincelado enjade,conlosojos llameantes ylisto paralevantarvuelo a ningunaparte.Delmismo modo, y salvando las distancias, una sinfonía tiene la necesaria responsabilidad de maniatar la bestia de la emoción con los rigores de la forma, y tal vez sea la imagen de un potro domado por la forma artística la figura más apropiada tratándosedeuna sinfonía argentina.Laobraque hoyseestrena congela consurigorformalalgunasdelasfuertes pasiones que nos caracterizan como pueblo. Tal vez sean particularmente notorios el desgarrado dramatismo del segundo movimiento y la violencia del cuarto. Todo teñido del color que nos rodea, y todo exasperado dramáticamenteatravésdeldurorigordelaformaartística.

Tal vez este sea el significado de componer una sinfonía en un país latinoamericano en los albores del siglo XXI: maniatar nuestras atribuladas pasiones y aprisionar los colores y paisajes - rurales y urbanos - con la disciplina de la forma, con el canon del orden artístico imprescindible para que exista mensaje. Desde los tiempos de Haydn la sinfonía como forma musical se ha desarrollado básicamente como una disciplina intelectual en su más pura esencia. Hoy esa disciplina artística se convierte en un verdadero imperativo moral que asegure un alto sentido estético, una clara comunicación y una fuerte catarsis comunitaria dentro de los límites de un vehículo capaz de ser socialmente compartido. Atrás deben quedar las cabriolas estéticas y los experimentos artísticos compuestos para la enciclopedia de Berlín o el crítico parisino. El compositor debe crear aquí y ahora para un público de carne y hueso; más precisamente de la misma carne y con los mismos huesos que el autor. Con un mensaje pregnante y responsable,consciente delas reminiscenciasy expectativasque lapalabrasinfonía despierta en el oyente habitual de conciertos. Algunos argumentarán que se trata de un retroceso; otros hablarán de un liberador avance. Pero lo cierto esque hay una hora del día en la que el crepúsculo y elamanecer tienen el mismo color.Ysolorevelasusignificadoconelcorrerdeltiempo.

Liu Xie, Chinese writer who lived between 466 and 521 A.D., taught that heart - or the expression, in more modern terms - was the fundamental principle of literature, and by extension of art in general. But such degree of expression - he said - had to be contained, chained and made firmly safe by artistic form. That is why he regardedliterarycreation asthe "chiseling of dragons",the magical art offreezing in artistic formthe drama of a restless animal. Nothingismore intensethanadragon chiseledinjade,with flaming eyes,andready to fly to nowhere. In the same way, a symphony has the responsibility of taming the beast of emotion with the rigor of form; and perhaps it is the image of a tamed stallion a more fitting image, coming from a Latin-American symphony. The work being premiered today intends to freeze up with formal rigor some of the strongest passions that characterize us as a people. Particularly notorious are the shattered emotions of the second movement and the violence of the fourth. Everything dyed with the colors that surround us, and everything expresseddramaticallythroughthehardrigorofartisticform.

May be this is the meaning of composing a symphony in a Latin-American country at the beginning of the XXI Century: to fasten our tumultuous passions and to imprison our colors and landscapes - rural and urbanwiththe disciplineofform,withthecanonofartisticorderindispensableforamessagetoexist.Sincethetimes of Haydn the symphony as a musical form has basically evolved as an intellectual discipline in its most pure essence.Todaythatartisticdisciplinebecomesatruemoralimperativethatmayassureahighaestheticsense,a clear communication, and a strong communal catharsis within the limits of a vehicle capable of being socially shared. The composer must create here and now for a audience of flesh and bones; more precisely of the same flesh and with the samebones of the composer. And all with a pregnantand responsible message, conscious of the reminiscences and expectations that the word symphony creates in the usual concertgoer. Some may argue that this is a regression; others will speak of a liberating advance. But the truth is that there is a time of day in whichtwilightanddawnhavethesamecolor.Anditonlyrevealsitsmeaningwiththepassageoftime.

Argentine-born composer and conductor Eduardo Alonso-Crespo was trained at the School of Musical Arts of the National University of Tucumán in Argentina, where he also received his Civil Engineer degree. He later came to the United States through a Fulbright Grant and obtained his Master degree in Conducting at Carnegie Mellon University, after studying with maestros Lukas Foss, Leonardo Balada and Samuel Jones. Further training included seminars and workshops with maestros MaxRudolf,GuntherSchullerandHenryHolt.

His works have been performed in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Brasil, Argentina, China, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, Israel, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Ucraine, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France, and at prestigious locations including the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the CarnegieRecitalHallinNewYork,theMadeleineChurchinParis,theDeDoelenGrandHallinRotterdam,theTeatroTeresa Carreño in Caracas and the Queluz Royal Palace in Lisbon. The list includes the Alejandro Shaw First Prize from the National Academy of Fine Arts of Argentina, together with the two Honorary Mentions especially created by the jury on that occasion (1981), the Second Prize from the Fundación San Telmo Composers Competition (1982), the First Prize of the First Competition of the Promúsica Foundation and the ArgentineMinistry of Foreign Affairs (1983), the Second Composition Prize from the NationalUniversity of La Plata Composers Competition (1983), the First and Second Prizes - simultaneously - in the Luis Gianneo Composers Competition (1983), the Cristóbal Colón International Prize for Symphonic Music (1986), the Third Prize in the Viotti-Valsesia International Competition (1986), the Honorary Mention from the Secretary of Culture of Argentina (1987), the Symphonic Commission Award from the National Endowment for the Arts of Argentina (1987), the Iris Marga Award for BestMusic for Theatre(1994)andtheFirstCompositionPrize of theBahía BlancaSymphonyOrchestra(1994).Amongotherdistinctionshe washonoredasMusicianoftheYear(Salta,Argentina,1990)andDistinguishedCitizen(Tucumán,Argentina,1998).

Due to the chronologicalinversion of the artistic seasons between the Northern and Southern hemispheres, Alonso-Crespo has served as Music Director of the Tucumán Symphony Orchestra in Argentina and Music Director of the Carnegie Mellon ContemporaryEnsemble intheU.S.A.fortwelve years.Hekeepsanintensivescheduleasguestconductor,with engagements with most of Argentine orchestras as well as orchestras and ensembles in Chile, Mexico, the United States, Portugal and France. In previous seasons he has been Resident Conductor at Carnegie Mellon University, Associate Conductor of the CarnegieMellonPhilharmonic,AssistantConductorofthe PittsburghCivicOrchestra,Music DirectoroftheCarnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble and Music Director of the Orquesta Estable de Tucumán in Argentina, the orchestra of the Tucumán Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1998 he made his debut at the prestigious Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires with a much acclaimed performance of Mahler's Fourth Symphony. Among his most recent conducting activities, Alonso-Crespo has recorded for the NaxoslabelleadingtheRoyalSymphonyOrchestraofSeville,Spain,inFebruaryof2005.

Besides composing chamber and symphonic music, he has produced an important number of works for the stage; among themtheballet Medea,the incidentalmusic for Macbeth - winner of the 1994 Iris MargaAwardin Argentina forbest original scorefordrama-andthe operasPutzi(1986),basedonananecdotefromFranzLiszt´slife,Yubarta(1988),ametaphoronthe survival of endangered species, and Juana, la loca (1991), composed for the 500 Anniversary of the Discovery of America, with régie and choreography by Claudio Aprile. In 1986 he was invited to present an opera and a ballet for the First Buenos Aires Summer Festival and in that same year he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts of Argentina to composehissecondopera.

His music is recorded on CD by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra (Overtures and Dances form Operas by Alonso-Crespo),theCamerataLazarte(Macbeth),theCarnegieMellonWindEnsemble(EpicDances),theArsNovaChildren and Youth Choir (Pachamama),and Andrea Merenzonand membersof theBuenos Aires Philharmonic (Concerto for bassoon and orchestra). His most recent conducting for compact disc - the recording of Leonardo Balada's Divertimentos with the CarnegieMellonContemporaryEnsembleforAlbanyRecords-receivedamostenthusiasticreviewfromFanfaremagazine.

Eduardo Alonso-Crespo served seven years as Composer in Residence and Principal Guest Conductor of the Salta SymphonyOrchestrainArgentina,andfifteenyearsinthefacultyoftheSchoolofMusicatCarnegieMellonUniversityinthe UnitedStatesofAmerica.
