Today, bee pollen is already consumed by people due to its benefits. However, there are other bee byproducts that are also beneficial, one of which is bee propolis. Bee propolis refers to the resinous substance which bees collect from different sources. Some of these sources are sap flows and tree buds. Bees use propolis, which is basically a resin, in sealing their hives. Propolis is used to fill gaps from 6 mm in width or less in the hives. At room temperature, bee propolis is very sticky but it is cold, it is very brittle and hard.

Is honey good for you? Bees themselves derive lots of benefits from this substance. Bee propolis can actually reinforce the hives' structural stability. In this way, they may easily defend their beehives from different parasites that may enter the hive. Bee propolis can also reduce vibrations inside the hive due to the main component of the propolis. Bee propolis has a unique chemical makeup including 55% resin and balm, 30% fatty acid and wax, 10% essential oil and 5% protein. Also, bee propolis contains many nutrients and trace elements. Bee propolis has a basic benefit to human since it possesses antibiotic properties. There are bioflavenoids in bee propolis which aids in strengthening our immune system. As such, bee propolis can enhance disease resistance more so since bee propolis contains Vitamin C as well as other enzymes. There are also researches suggesting that bee propolis is very effective in fighting against various bacteria particularly those that cause salmonellae, pneumonia, tuberculosis and influenza among others. Bee propolis also has anti-fungal properties.


Chemically, bee propolis works like an antibiotic wherein it can break down the walls as well as the cytoplastic membrane of the bacterial cell. In this way, division of the bacterial cell may be prevented. Bee porpolis is a naturally occurring substance which means that any person may consume this on a daily basis. In the medical community, bee propolis is considered as a preventive medicine. The good news is that there are no known side effects to bee propolis. However, if you are allergic to resin, you should consult a health practitioner first. Our body is not able to build natural resistant to bee propolis.
