VOLUNTARY HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF GOA Non-profit organisation working towards health promotion for the past 12 years in Goa. Registered under The Societies Registration Act, Reg. No. 223/Goa/2001 State unit of the Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI), the largest healthcare NGO in India, linking together over 4,500 member institutions across India. VHAG has been very active in North Goa and a few parts of South Goa which includes Verna i.e. in close proximity to the resort. They are eager to spread their wings and reach out to the villagers of the rest of South Goa especially in the vicinity of our resort. i.e. villages of - Arossim, Consua, Cansaulim, Utorda and Majorda. The area of focus would be on health and wellness covering: • Nutritional health and wellness counselling • Preventive health education Under this, VHAG would like to implement the following activities: • School Health Programme • Malaria and other vector-borne diseases – Behaviour Change Communication • Tuberculosis awareness • Awareness and campaign on lifestyle diseases in the community

BREASTFEEDING PROMOTION PROGRAM Assist three hospitals (GMC, Asilo & Hospicio) in implementing the 10 steps / guidelines of UNICEF to become a Baby Friendly Hospital. Full time counselors in each of the hospitals. The counselors with the help of the flip chart, posters and other IEC materials counsel the mothers on the following: • • • • •
The importance of breastfeeding Disadvantages of bottle feeding Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months Nutrition for mother and child Family planning
A total of 13,631 mothers were counseled in the financial year 2012- 2013.
HEALTH PROMOTION IN SCHOOLS • Schools covered: Govt. Primary Schools and High Schools (std 1st to 10th ) • No. of schools covered: 13 • No. of students covered so far: 5000+ • Areas in which schools exist: Cortalim, Nagoa and Verna. • Check up of students for general health problems, anaemia, underweight/ overweight, heart problems, skin problem, thyroid, ENT etc. • Dental check • Eye check up for refractive errors • Follow up of cases needing attention (nonurgent/urgent), calling parents for counselling. • Talks on various aspect – proper nutrition, importance of physical activities, dental care etc.

MALARIA ELIMINATION CAMPAIGN • In collaboration with DHS 3, full time field staff of VHAG have been working both in North and South Goa • Areas: Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Corlim, Aldona, Candolim, Calangute, Talegaon, Porvorim, Chimbel, Bambolim, Cortalim Margao, Vasco etc. • No. of construction sites covered: 154 • Approx. no. of construction site workers covered: 1800 • Activities: BCC ( Behaviour Change Communication) on Malaria – talks/awareness session to workers, contractors • Detecting mosquito breeding sites in and around construction sites – alerting health staff in nearby Govt. health centres. • Ensuring anti larval treatment is done properly by workers • Checking whether workers have health cards
MOBILE HEALTH VAN PROJECT IN QUEPEM • Since September 2012 • Area of work: Quepem Taluka Activities done: • Health camps in schools / villages • Dental camps in schools / villages • Eye camps in schools / villages • Conducting health awareness talks in villages and schools • Dispensing free medicines as per needs • Doing follow ups and referrals to specialists and hospitals if necessary • Social worker on the project handles social issues and women’s issues • Identifying the disabled and checking/ helping them to get their disability certificate and schemes from the Social Welfare Dept.
