At the University of Hawaii, Manoa's College of Education, we are working on a research and development project with the goal of enhancing students' social presence through the use of a mixed-reality 3D virtual learning environment. Our project, the Holodeck, attempts to bring the virtual world and the real world together as a “mash-up”. Using the Holodeck, on-campus and online students will be able to come together virtually and take part in class activities. This article is the first in a series that will be published in three separate issues of the Virtual Education Journal. In the current article, we will tell the story of how we built the Holodeck, from concept to advanced working prototype. In the second article, we will describe how we are using the 77
