Camp to be

Spectacular

The 2011 edition of the Buddy and Anita Priesmeyer Cow Camp and the TJLA’s Lamb, Goat and Swine Camp will be a great one according to Cherie Carrabba, Executive Director of the TJLA. “This year the entire camp will be held at the Brazos County Expo Center,” Mrs. Carrabba stated. “That will prevent people from having to go back and forth to the campus and the Expo Center.” Camp will kick-off with the discussion by the Texas major livestock show managers about rule changes and updates for the 2011-2012 major shows that begin this fall. That will be held on Friday night at the Expo Center. “Camp will cover some very important topics such as mandatory Quality Counts testing for all of Texas’ junior livestock exhibitors. Dr. Chris Boleman has worked with Quality Counts from the beginning, and he will be explaining the new rules for being able to exhibit at Texas’ major shows.” In addition Mrs. Carrabba said that there will be a Livestock Judging segment at this year’s camp to accommodate the new livestock judging divions within the TJLA. “The TAMU livestock judging team and Dr. Boleman will conduct that session which should be extremely helpful for livestock exhibitors.”

Other camp topics include Agriculture Ambassadors, Careers in Agriculture, FSA loan programs available to exhibitors and their families, and the traditional break-out sessions on swine, lambs, goats, steers and heifers. “This year, for the first time, we plan on splitting our steer and heifer groups to get more specific about the things needed for each species,” Mrs. Carrabba said. Sullivan Supply’s new Livestock College will be producing the fitting and grooming part of camp on Saturday afternoon. In addition, we will again have Family Fun Night on Saturday – one of the biggest success stories that has come out of Camp in recent years.” The skills learned at Camp can be put into practice on Sunday when the TJLA will sponsor a show at the Brazos County Expo Center. There will be two rings of competition for steers, heifers, lambs, pigs and goats. Complete information on the show will be available at www.theshowbox.com by Monday, April 18. Camp is a joint effort between the TAMU Animal Science Department, the Texas Agrilife Extension Service and the Texas Junior Livestock Association.
