Els aniversaris són el millor moment per fer una ullada cap enrere i fer balanç d’allò aconseguit fins ara. La 40a edició de la Copa del Rei MAPFRE ens permet fer aquest exercici i poder dir, amb orgull, que la badia de Palma acull la millor competició de vela de la Mediterrània.

Amb aquest mateix orgull, com a presidenta de les Illes Balears, vull agrair als esportistes, organitzadors i patrocinadors l’esforç, la dedicació i el suport que durant tots aquests anys, també en els de més dificultats, han contribuït a fer d’aquesta cita un referent d’excel·lència en el món de la vela i l’esport.

En aquest agraïment és just fer una menció especial de la tasca capdavantera del Reial Club Nàutic de Palma. A la competició esportiva, en la qual enguany participen més d’un centenar d’equips d’una vintena de països, s’hi ha d’afegir la dimensió social i l’impacte econòmic que té l’esdeveniment per a Palma i per a les Illes Balears.

Vull animar un any més tots els participants i aficionats, i potser ara amb més il·lusió per haver recuperat la normalitat després de la pandèmia, perquè durant aquests sis dies gaudeixin de la competició, de la badia de Palma i de la nostra mar Mediterrània, que tant ens identifica. 40 YEARS OF THE BEST MEDITERRANEAN SAILING COMPETITION

Anniversaries are the best moment to look back and take stock of what has been achieved so far. The 40th edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE allows us to do this exercise and be able to say, with pride, that the Bay of Palma hosts the best sailing competition in the Mediterranean.

With this same pride, as President of the Balearic Islands I would like to thank the sportspeople, organizers, and sponsors for the effort, dedication, and support that during all these years –even in the most difficult ones– have contributed to making this event a reference of excellence in the world of sailing and sport.

In this gratitude, it is fair to make a special mention of the work of the captain of the Real Club Náutico de Palma. To the competition, in which more than a hundred teams from around twenty countries participate this year, we must add the social dimension and the economic impact that the event has on Palma and the Balearic Islands.

I would like to encourage all the participants and fans once again –maybe even more after having recovered normality after the pandemic– to during these six days enjoy the competition, the bay of Palma, and our Mediterranean Sea, which identifies us so much.

La Copa del Rey MAPFRE cumple 40 años como referencia indiscutible en la temporada de regatas del Mediterráneo. Los mejores equipos de las flotas nacional e internacional se citan cada verano en la bahía de Palma para disfrutar de unas condiciones de navegación inmejorables y de la legendaria combinación de hospitalidad y profesionalidad del RCNP.

The Copa del Rey MAPFRE celebrates 40 years as the undisputed reference in the Mediterranean regatta season. The best teams of the national and international fleets meet every summer in the Bay of Palma to enjoy unbeatable sailing conditions and the legendary combination of hospitality and professionalism of the RCNP.

La Copa del Rey MAPFRE nació en 1982, cuando la Asociación Nacional de Cruceros organizaba con el Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) la primera edición de una regata abierta a todas las clases en tiempo compensado. Aceptaron el reto más de medio centenar de participantes. El italiano “Nan” era el encargado de inaugurar el libro de oro de la regata, al que seguirían el “Barracuda” de Pepín González (1983) y el “Bribón” de José Cusí (1984 y 1985), sentando la tradición de que S.M. el Rey Don Juan Carlos navegase en “su” regata.

Tras incorporarse en 1987 al circuito mundial de la clase Maxi, en 1988 se alcanzaban los 106 participantes, divididos por primera vez en dos clases: IOR e IMS.

El principio de la década de 1990 fue de dominio español entre una flota internacional consolidada en el entorno del centenar de unidades. Fueron años de cambios en el sistema de compensación de tiempos, que desembocarían en los IMS Regata y Crucero, divididos según esloras. El podio hablaba casi exclusivamente español, dominado por nombres como Josele y Noluco Doreste, José Luis Suevos, Pedro Campos, Jaime Yllera, Pelayo de la Mata, Manuel Chirivella o José Manuel Cardesín.

Con el cambio de siglo, el IMS evolucionó hasta ramificarse en las clases 500 –posteriormente 570–, 600 y 670, llegando con fuerza las clases Monotipo y Box-Rule. El “Caixa Galicia” de Vicente Tirado hacía historia encadenando tres títulos consecutivos: 2002, 2003 y 2004.

The Copa del Rey MAPFRE was born in 1982, when the Asociación Nacional de Cruceros organized with the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) the first edition of a regatta open to all classes in corrected time. More than fifty participants accepted the challenge. The Italian “Nan” inaugurated the regatta’s golden book, to be followed by Pepín González’s “Barracuda” (1983) and José Cusí’s “Bribón” (1984 and 1985), establishing the tradition of H.M. King Juan Carlos sailing in “his” regatta.

After joining the Maxi class world circuit in 1987, in 1988 the number of participants reached 106, divided for the first time into two classes: IOR and IMS.

The beginning of the 1990s was dominated by Spain among a consolidated international fleet of around one hundred units. These were years of changes in the time compensation system, which would lead to the IMS Regatta and Cruiser classes, divided according to length. The podium spoke almost exclusively Spanish, dominated by names such as Josele and Noluco Doreste, José Luis Suevos, Pedro Campos, Jaime Yllera, Pelayo de la Mata, Manuel Chirivella and José Manuel Cardesín.

With the turn of the century, the IMS evolved until it branched out into the 500 –later 570–, 600, and 670 classes, with the Monotype and Box-Rule classes arriving in force. Vicente Tirado’s “Caixa Galicia” made history with three consecutive titles: 2002, 2003, and 2004.
