The Synopsis The Song of Names is a novel about Dovidl, a boy prodigy from Poland who is stranded in London during the Second World War. Hearing that his family was wiped out in Hitler’s Holocaust, he cannot come to terms with the loss. In his search for comfort, he meets a Chassidic Rebbe and his group of survivors who preserve the memory of the dead in a never-ending ‘Song of Names’. Dovidl, redeemed by the song, reframes the rest of his life within an enclosed faith community. Norman Lebrecht June, 2012 The Music When I read Norman Lebrecht’s stunning first novel The Song of Names in 2004, I could hear music running through the whole book – especially in its dénouement: the power and beauty of the actual ‘Song of Names’, that leads to Dovidl’s abrupt and complete disappearance. It has taken eight years to find the right commission for it – I was over the moon when Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) consented to me setting ‘The Song’ for, very aptly, their Rememberance Day concert, this year. It transpires that Norman had, indeed, music in his head during the writing of the book – specifically an ancient pre-Christian “nigun” or melody, which was given to him by an Iraqi Hazan. He also had echoes of the prayer for the dead, El Mole Rachamim which I have used in a more concentrated form (courtesy of Dr Alexander Knapp). My heartfelt thanks go to PGS for giving me this long-wished creative opportunity, Norman Lebrecht for his endless patience in my pedantic questioning on his libretto and Dr Alex Knapp for his continued resources of Jewish music. The work is dedicated to PGS and LMP. Roxanna Panufnik June, 2012
First performance on 11 November 2012 at St Thomas’s Cathedral, Portsmouth, given by Portsmouth Grammar School Choir and the London Mozart Players.
This score reflects the state of editorial work and correction as at July 2012
Libretto Martin: The last time I saw Dovidl was the last day of my whole life. (Baritone Solo) Tenors:
Dovidl, Dovidl
Martin: Where should I begin? The day he turned up on our doorstep, the Sunday before the War. The month before his country fell, the season before the Blitz … the last chance to cycle through my city before houses came crashing down in flames. Altos: What’s your name? (as young Martin) Dovidl (Trebles): ‘Iz Dovid Eli Rapoport. You may call me Dovidl. Tenors:
Dovidl, Dovidl
Martin:
‘Dovidl, my heaven-sent almost-brother.’
Women’s chorus: Dovidl… Martin: And he lived with me – within me – like an artificial lung. He filled me with confidence and contentment when natural organs failed. (T& B: Dovidl) He was a genius and I was not. He put the breath into my soul. And that’s how I loved him – not as a brother, but like my hand, curved beneath my cheekbone as I drift off happily to sleep.’ Women’s chorus:Dovidl, Dovidl, why did he go? (a short lullaby of Dovidls underneath:) Martin:
And then we heard The word. The terrible reports. Not to be believed.
+ male chorus: Everyone herded into ghettos. Trainloads sent to camps. Murdered in their masses. The hour they arrived. + Altos:
