big part of the Edison experience. The SMMUSD Music program serves students in grades 3-4-5 with instrumental music and/or choir for our 4th and 5th grade students. These classes begin Thursday, August 27 and classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Music Back to School Night is 6:00-8:00 p.m. August 31 at JAMS. Our third graders take a general music class once a week on Mondays and their music classes will begin August 31. Our youngest students (Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades) take a choral music class once a week on Mondays or Fridays beginning September 18 for 20 weeks. Edison uses its Stretch Grant from the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF) to provide this choral music program in Spanish. Music is another language and gives students a window into other cultures.

and catching up with friends they haven’t seen since last June. It really takes all of us – Parents, Students, Teachers and other school staff -- working together to provide the exceptional progress we want for our students. Our Student/Parent/School Compact outlines what we each pledge to do, so please review that with your child as you both sign and return that document. In the classrooms in September, we have conversations about rights and responsibilities about how we’ll work together. Our students develop classroom constitutions as part of this work and as part of our observation of Constitution Day each fall, we present them to each other and post them in the classrooms. As we talk about the US Constitution, we also discuss how many countries in our hemisphere developed their constitutions after they became independent from a colonial power. That was true in the US when we became independent from England, and it was true in Mexico, Central and South America and the Carribbean when they overthrew the Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch and Danish colonizers. Many countries who overthrew Spanish colonizers have their independence days in mid-September and we celebrate those days as the Días de Independencia. Please join us for Edison’s Back to School Night(s) – Thursday, August 27 for Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade families and Tuesday, September 1 for Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade families. Both days are minimum days, so please mark your calendars for early pick up on those days. On both evenings, we will have food for sale from 5:00-6:00 p.m.(support our 5th grade scholarships for Catalina!). From 6:00-7:00 p.m., join us in the cafetorium for a schoolwide parent meeting. From 7:00-8:00, visit your child’s classroom and meet his or her teacher. Learn about the daily schedule, classroom routines, what your child will be learning this year, how you can support your child and be involved. Welcome Back!
