Edison Language Academy ARE YOU RETURNING TO EDISON IN 2018-19? IMPORTANT: RETURN TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE NO LATER THAN APRIL 26th 2018 Please complete and return this form by April 26th and help us get an accurate count of enrollment for next year. Our enrollment affects the number of teachers that SMMUSD allocates to our school and the way that we configure classes for next year. Your response lets us know whether or not we will have vacancies in Grades 1-5 next year so we can respond to families who have applied for admission. We also use this information to begin the process of building next year’s classes. This is your opportunity to share with us information you believe would be important for the school to consider in making a good class placement for your child next year. I appreciate your candor and will treat your response as confidential. WHAT TO DO:  

If you reside in the SMMUSD and you DO plan to have your child continue at Edison, all you need to do is complete and return this form. If your child is returning to Edison but you do not live in the SMMUSD and your child attends Edison on an interdistrict attendance permit, you must complete and return this form AND a send a Verification of Continuing Enrollment to SMMUSD. Verification forms will be sent to families with children attending on permit and are due to SMMUSD by June 1, 2018. You can also download the verification form from the district website (www.smmusd.org). Go to the link for Permits for 2018-19 School Year, click and go to the information about Verification of Continuing Enrollment and then print, sign and return. If you do not have access to the Internet or have questions, Community Liaison Yoly Gutierrez can help you. Contact her at (310) 828-0335, ext. 61-305. If you used to live in SMMUSD, but have now moved and live outside of SMMUSD and plan to have our child return to Edison, you must complete and return this form, apply to your new district of residence for an inter-district attendance permit and fill out a permit application with SMMUSD. There is additional information on the district website (www.smmusd.org) if you click the button for Permits for the 2018-19 School Year. Please take care of securing your exit permit right away as some district have very strict deadlines and if they do not grant you an exit permit, we are not allowed to continue your child’s enrollment next year. If you have questions, please see Yoly.

HOW DO WE MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT CLASS PLACEMENT FOR NEXT YEAR? Teachers work in grade level teams to make recommendations; the principal reviews and makes final placement decisions. When we build classes we consider: 1) the needs of individual children; 2) creating classes of equitable size with a good emotional and behavioral dynamics, a language balance, and mix of instructional needs, and; 3) separating children who may need a break from each other or who do not work well together in the same classroom. We also believe that it is in children’s best interests to learn to work with a variety of different teachers during elementary school and to have the opportunity to get to know as many as possible of the children in their grade level. Only information included on this form will be considered for placement decisions. DO I NEED TO PROVIDE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION ABOUT CLASS ASSIGNMENTS? No. Complete that section of the form only If you think there are things about your child (health, emotional needs, family circumstances, peer relations, etc.) about which we may not be aware and that this information would help us make a good placement for your child. Please be aware that parents do not pick their children’s teachers. If your only reason for writing is to ask for a specific teacher, please be aware that we do not consider those requests. Your child can have an excellent year with any of our teachers. However, if you have an older child who was placed with a teacher and you feel that the same placement for your younger child would not be a good fit, the please state that on the form and we will do our best to take that into consideration. We don’t make individual appointments or accept separate letters regarding placement to ensure that ALL parents understand the process and have the same opportunity to provide input.
