ANNOUNCEMENTS VALENTINES DANCE – On Friday, February 12 from 5:30-8:30 pm come for delicious food, a family dance, lotería, karaoke, raffles, and more! And sign up to help at one of the activities – it takes a village to run a great Valentines Dance!! AFTERNOON VALET FOR KANSAS AVE– Wanted: a responsible adult to staff a Kansas Avenue afternoon pick- up zone from 2:303:30 on M-T-Th-F and from 1:20-2:20 pm on Wednesdays. If you have those times free and are interested in helping Edison children depart safely from campus in the afternoon (for a modest hourly rate), please contact Principal Orum for more details. AFTERSCHOOL MUSIC CLASS 3RD AND TH 4 GRADES – If your 3rd or 4th grader is interested in the after school Choral Music program in Spanish with Maestra Jacqueline Fuentes on Wednesdays (2:00-3:30)and Fridays (3:00-4:30) beginning on Jan. 27, please return a registration form asap. There is no charge for this class but we would like to have at least 20 students to offer the program. PARENT SUPPORT NETWORK – The UCLA School Function Project at Edison provides a bilingual monthly parenting support network on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:30 am in Room 208. There is a topic for each session, but facilitator Bobby Verdugo (MSW) will respond to other questions/concerns as well. Topics for each of the four remaining meetings: 1/27 Improving Your Child's Self-Esteem and Emotional Resiliency; 2/24 -How to Improve Communication Between Parents and Children; 4/28 – How to Support Your Child’s Social Development and Friend- ships; and 5/25 - How to Reduce Children's and Parents’ Anxiety towards Upcoming Challenges. No RSVP needed.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: EDISON’S INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTS Edison is fortunate to have not only an outstanding team of certificated teachers leading classroom instruction, but also an impressive cadre of Bilingual Instructional Assistants (BIA). We have eight BIAs working with small groups of students to support differentiated small group instruction, and/or support students who may need a little more individual attention. I want to make sure you know who these wonderful and talented individuals are. The Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF) provides funding for all eight of our BIAs. Thanks to all who support SMMEF so that we have the resources for these important members of our staff. Vicky Valadez - Former PTA president and parent of three former Edison students, Vicky has been at Edison for over 30 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the immersion program. She works with Maestras Fullerton (Kinder), Jimenez (2 nd) and Maiztegui (4th). Juana Stucchi has been at Edison for mor than 15 years. A long-time teacher in her nativeperu, she supports students with Maestras Cueva (1st), Melendez (2nd), and Tejeda (1st). Laura Barreras Graciano has worked in SMMUSD since 19 years ago and since 9 years ago at Edison and is an afterschool teacher in the School Age Child Care program at Edison. She supports Maestras Banks (Kinder), Brumer (4th) and Martinez (2nd). Emma Casillas has been part of our Edison team for over 5 years. She supports the students in Maestras Meade ‘s (Kinder) and Mojica’s (1st) classrooms, supervises a before school reading support program with Lexia Reading, and supports Edison’s intervention program. Geralyn Goodman is beginning her second year at Edison A retired teacher and rd th teacher coach, she supports Maestras Boxer (3 ) and Naranjo (5 ) and works with Maestra Watring (Reading) in after school intervention. Virginia “Johanna” Brown attended Edison (as did her daughters) and is in her second year working at Edison as an instructional assistant, supporting Maestra Williams (3rd) Maestro Morales (5th) and students in the computer lab in the after school intervention. Alexandra Brandoli joined us two years ago after having worked for many years as an assistant in the immersion program at Grandview Elementary in LAUSD. She rd th assists Maestras Alvarez (3 ) and Murcia (5 ) and supports students in the computer lab after school. Cara LaBarbera, our newest instructional assistant, came on board in December. She has a Masters in Spanish and is now working on a Masters in Education and supports th Kindergarten reading intervention and Maestro Nepomuceno’s 4 graders.
