ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: MUSIC AT EDISON

Cold and Flu Season Reminders – We want your children at school every day that they’re healthy. But when flu and fever strike, please keep them home while they’re contagious. Children should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. And in cases of vomiting or diarrhea, they shouldn’t return until 24 hours after the last incident. Please make sure your child knows to use tissues to blow his or her nose, to sneeze into his/her sleeve, and to wash hands frequently with soap and warm water. Those are the best ways to avoid spreading germs. If your child does need to stay home due to illness, please call Iris Preciado (310) 828-0335, ext. 61-348 and let us know. If the absence is more than three days, please ask your doctor for a note so we can excuse the absences.

Congratulations to New Site Council Members – Betty Baboujon and Carolina Vila have been elected as new members. Young Storytellers The Big Show! – For a funny and inspiring evening, come and see th ten screenplays written by Edison 5 grade student performed on our stage by working actors. It’s a pleasure to be part of a school district that not only has rigorous academic standards and makes resources available for teaching and learning, and also has a truly outstanding music program. All students at Edison have music education opportunities – with the Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade choral music program supported through the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation and 3rd-5th graders participating in the District music program. And this December there are several opportunities for parents to enjoy and appreciate the progress our students have made with their music education. In 4th and 5th grades, every student has the opportunity to learn to play an instrument or to be in a choir, with twice weekly music classes during the school day. Parents of 4th and 5th graders will have the opportunity to see how their children are doing in music this year at a winter “informance” – Thursday, December 4 at 8:45 am for 5th grade and Thursday, December 11 at 8:45 am for 4th graders. Edison also provides a choral music program for students in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades. Our program is entirely in Spanish, taught by music educator and professional musician Jacqueline Fuentes and provides another way for our students to learn about the cultural heritage of the Americas. Please come and enjoy the K-1 Choral Concert on Tuesday, December 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the cafetorium. 5th Grade parents will be selling dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. On Wednesday, December 17, 2nd grade students will be performing as part of a Noche de Baile y Canto from 6:30-7:30 p.m. – also in the cafeteria. 2nd graders will sing and 5th graders will dance. Congratulations are in order for the 37 Edison 5th grade students who auditioned and were just selected for the District Elementary Honor Choir, Honor Band and Honor Orchestra! These students will be beginning weekly afterschool rehearsals culminating in performances in February, 2015. If you’ve never been, the Stairway to the Stars Concerts are really impressive and feature the top student musicians in elementary, middle and high school. The rigor of our District music programs and the caliber of our students will amaze you!
