The Architecture of Target Field

 Build it and they will come! After many years indoors at the Metrodome, the Twins knew what they wanted: an outdoor, Minnesota baseball park. By all measures, they succeeded. In its first year, Target Field received many awards for its beautiful design and the high-quality fan experience. Join us at Target Field to tour the ball park with its engineering and design issues in mind, learning about its site, its materials, its architects and builders, its structure, and its function. Baseball on the Bench: Scorekeeping 101

 “Keeping the book” has been a part of baseball all along. This class is a must for all players, parents, coaches and anyone interested in keeping score. In addition to a tour of Target Field, the class will involve an inside look at and a demonstration of scorekeeping. You’ll learn how the information kept in the scorebook can hep the coach and players with the strategies in the game. For example: Where did that hitter hit the ball last time? How many pitches has the pitcher thrown? What did they do in this situation last time? Keeping score effectively can help players learn about baseball and keep their focus on the game. The Life and Trials of Native MN Bees

Featured Course

 Bees are in the news lately, but what do you really know about them, and how can you help? Come and learn about bees as a group of animals. Learn to spot the different kinds of bees that are in your garden. Then, learn about flowers and plants you can use in your own lawn and garden, and techniques for caring for them, to improve your home landscape and our community to support and preserve these crucial pollinators. Instructor Ian Lane is a graduate student in the Department of Entomology at the University of Minnesota. He is currently working with Dr. Marla Spivak and Dr. Eric Watkins to investigate how to incorporate flowering plants into grass lawns in order to promote pollinator conservation. 7003-S01 Wednesday, May 28 Edina Community Center

Quilting Bee

 Do you struggle to find time and space to complete your needlework projects? Join our group of quilters. We gather once a month to work on our own projects. Soap-Making: Using Additives and Colors

 Learn to use additives, colorants and coloring techniques to bring more visual appeal to your soap. We’ll also share specific websites for additional instruction. Soap-making Made Simple is a required prerequisite class, unless you already have a basic understanding of soap-making. We’ll cut the soap we made in last-week’s class into full-size bars to take home. Two additional bars of special colored soap will be available for you to take home the following week. Soap-Making Made Simple

 Learn the basics of making cold process soap in this fun and rewarding class. We’ll cover the basic oils used in soap-making, as well as the proper use of sodium hydroxide (lye). We’ll discuss current recommendations on essential versus fragrance oils, learn where to buy all the materials you will need, and share a host of trusted websites for soapmaking supplies. You’ll be able to take home a full-size bar of the soap we make the week after class. Instructor Deb Baron has been making cold processed, hot processed, as well as liquid soap for over 14 years. Build Your Own “Little Free Library”

 You’ve seen the these take-a-book, leave-abook mini libraries popping up in front yards all over Edina. Here’s your chance to build your own Little Free Library TM, and explore the Edina Community Center’s woodshop, too. Adults or pairs (an adult plus a child aged 8 and older) will work together to build and decorate the structure. Plant your library and help grow the love of reading and talking about books in our community. Plus, you can register your library at www.littlefreelibrary. org, and become part of an even larger community. Organic Lawn Care

 Come over to the “green” side! Learn how to grow a lush and healthy lawn that’s safe for people, pets and the environment. You can have a gorgeous lawn without using synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides and the health risks associated with their use. Topics include what products to use and where to get them economically, proper cultural practices for a healthy lawn, and why conventional programs are harmful to you and your lawn. We’ll have plenty of time for questions and discussion. Shrubs and Small Trees for the Home Landscape

 Join us to learn all about the best shrubs and small trees to use in the home landscape. Perennials for Everyone

 Join us to explore all the basics of growing perennials successfully. Paced for beginners, we’ll discuss preparing the soil and choosing the best flowers to grow, as well as where to buy them. We’ll cover using fertilizers and mulches, and offer tips and techniques for maintaining and keeping the garden blooming all season. There will be color slides, and you’ll go home with many handouts.  Instructor Jim Faustgen has been teaching garden classes for 25 years. Hobbies & Interests Woodshop Orientation

 No prior experience is necessary. Your first step in the world of woodworking is to sign up for this orientation workshop, where you will become familiar with the safe operation of all of the major power equipment and tools. You’ll learn the basic elements of woodworking as well as shop procedures. You will complete a wooden bread board during the orientation, and you will leave feeling inspired and empowered to do your own woodworking projects to share with those around you.  If you already know the fundamentals of bridge, from previous study or playing (within the last 10 years or so), this may be the class for you. Update and improve your game by learning modern bidding methods, including 5-card majors, convenient minors, and limit raises. No artificial bids (conventions) are included; all bids are natural.  Join us for a weekly, entry-level duplicate bridge game. This is not a class, but rather your opportunity to play and practice duplicate bridge in a cordial, nurturing, low-stress, fun environment.  French artist Henri Matisse had a Featured unique sensibility and creative vision Course that fostered a long, groundbreaking career that changed how we think about art. Explore Matisse’s 60-year career, his creative process, his techniques, and his innovative contributions to modern art. Learn how Matisse worked hard to make his paintings look like they took little effort. Understand why Matisse is considered the father of modern art. This course will serve as an introduction to the major Matisse exhibition now on view at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts through May 18, 2014. Collections and the Art of Russian Museums

 Examine the great Russian collectors and collections, the reason behind that activity, and the Russian museums that resulted. Maddy’s Canterbury Tour

 Prior to post time, you’ll join Maddy behind the scenes at Canterbury Park to watch the jockeys and horses get their racing psyche on. Next you will join announcer Paul Allen in the upper level as he calls the race. You’ll get to watch the pro in action, while you watch the racing action. Afterward, you can talk with Allen and ask questions about horseracing, betting or whatever strikes your fancy. Then it’s off to the winner’s circle. You’ll watch a race from where few other race attendees are allowed to go. By now, you have probably developed a hefty thirst or hunger. We will treat you to a cold beverage and bite of food at the Canterbury Cantina or the Finish Line Café to get you ready for the next race. This race is yours to wager on or just watch and cheer. Ricky’s WWII History Tour

 On this tour you will be driven to the Commemorative Air Force Museum in St. Paul where Ricky will educate you on the six aircraft stored there, a large motor pool fleet and a unique collection of World War II artifacts on display. Beginning Tai Chi with Fans

 Made popular by the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Tai Chi Fan is one of the fastestgrowing forms of Tai Chi. It combines the skills of Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Qigong, and performing arts, using sturdy fans as part of the exercise. The movements mix hardness and softness, attack and defense, fast and slow, feminine and masculine. The practice is filled with beauty and grace. Long term practice can improve immunity, reshape your figure, increase flexibility and coordination, and restore your sense of equilibrium. Take your first steps with us as we explore the basic and fundamental movements in this artistic and entertaining exercise. Course price includes the required Tai Chi Fan; you will receive your fan at the first class session. Instructor Sasha Szutu was born in Taiwan. She has practiced Chinese dance for over 30 years, focused mainly on Chinese Kung Fu dance. She has performed on the world stage at the Festival of Nations, Peking Opera, and many other Chinese cultural events. When she saw Tai Chi Fan performed on the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch travel, it was love at first sight. She also teaches dance in her own studio and at the Twin Cities Chinese Language School.

 Have you ever wanted to try scuba diving before committing to the whole certification course? Experience the fun and ease of moving underwater while wearing scuba gear in the pool. Aqua Boot Camp

 Join us in the pool for some high intensity training. Use the natural resistance of the water to improve your metabolism. It has been proven that participants using high intensity intervals vs. moderate intensity training have improved their metabolic resting rate. Workouts will be in both shallow and deep water. Kay is certified as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Instructor, and Water Fitness Instructor. As Edina Community Aquatics Supervisor, she helps adults and children feel comfortable in the water, build selfesteem, and understand water safety.

 Re-energize your evening with an active water fitness workout offering a sampling of exercise moves. Disco, pop, classic rock, country, hand jive, line dance--you name it! You may not even notice that you are improving your core strength and stability, and targeting all major muscle groups in this workout combining cardio segments and intervals to speed up and slow down the pace.
