EXPO 2015

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Right from the first Expo, held in the Crystal Palace in London in 1851, the Universal Exposition has been the ideal stage for the most ambitious goals reached by man over time. It’s a chance to share innovation, technological progress and major discoveries, architectural projects or artistic movements, but also to create places that become true symbols of the culture and story of that age. The Expo began as a noncommercial event, aimed at creating a sort of sounding board for international dialogue between citizens, countries and institutions on topical issues of universal interest. From the very beginning, it was the prime occasion for displaying human creativity and talent via the presentation of the best that each country could offer the world in that particular historical moment, in a kind of magnificent fair of the knowhow and intelligence of every nation.

Universal or International? The Bie has defined two types of Exposition that differ in terms of frequency, duration, organisation and themes. Milano 2015 is a Universal Exposition, as were Shanghai 2010, Aichi 2005 and Hanover 2000, and the future Dubai 2020; between one Universal Exposition and the next, there is an International Exposition (Zaragoza 2008, Yeosu 2012 and Astana 2017).
