Happy New Year Last month my husband asked me what my New Years resolution would be and as I sat to ponder what type of resolution I could make he quickly informed he had already picked one out for me. Hhhmm..you know it is never good when someone knows exactly what you need to improve upon and they are quick to tell you. As it turns out I have a huge flaw and in case you did not know this….I am a control freak. I’m known amongst my friends, family and coworkers as being the one who herds the group and gets everyone focused on the task at hand. I’ve been called bossy, though I’d argue that I am a decision-maker. I don’t allow myself to be pushed around. I am stubborn, I always need a plan and I am quick to pass judgement. Here’s the question I have. Is it so bad to be a control freak? Why does it sound so bad? Would things get done if there wasn’t a control freak in the midst? On behalf of all control freaks, I’d like to say that it’s not a bad thing. I’d also like to take this opportunity to dispel any myths or misconceptions about control freaks. Myth #1: Control freaks are uptight. Far from it. I like to let loose just as much as the next girl. Although I am a control freak, I can also be spontaneous and daring. I do try new things (as long as it is something I choose to do). Myth #2: Control freaks are bossy. The worse thing to a control freak is a person who can’t make decisions. Control freaks simply try to help indecisive people make up their minds through logical situation analysis (or in my case I make the decision for them). Myth #3: Control freaks are hard to work with. Not so. Control freaks are highly productive individuals who thrive with others who are highly productive. If there is a weak link in a group project, a control freak is likely the person to kick that lazy person out. Myth #4: Control freaks are bitches. Bitchiness has nothing to do with being a control freak. Control freaks might get annoyed if decisions aren’t being made, but everyone can get irritated. (I just speak my mind more than most). Myth #5: Control freaks can’t take criticism. Control freaks strive for the best experiences and overall improvement. Control freaks understand that they don’t know everything and are willing to learn from others. (Though my way is usaully better.) They are not always perfectionists, but similar traits may apply. So as I promise to try to be more patient and understanding this year I am going to take deep breathes, bite my tongue and probably acquire a huge ulcer all in the name of letting go and giving up my horrible habit. And being a control freak means I have to see this through to the end… which means… there is going to be a lot of unorganized chaos happening this year!

Karen Carpenter biographer to sign Little Girl Blue in Amarillo January 15th

Randy L. Schmidt began his career as a music educator in Amarillo ISD at Carver Elementary Academy in 1998. On Saturday, January 15, the Denton-based elementary music teacher and author returns to Amarillo to sign copies of Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter, his criticallyacclaimed biography of the singer whose life he’s researched for more than two decades. Recently published by Chicago Review Press (US) and Omnibus Press (UK), Little Girl Blue has been featured on “Entertainment Tonight,” “Inside Edition” and other television programs. The New York Times named the book one of its prestigious “Editor’s Choice” titles and called it “[A] heartrending biography . . . [A] compassionate book, which gives a tortured waif the third dimension she deserved.” People magazine gave Little Girl Blue three stars and said the book adds “new dimension and some alarming detail to a familiar story. . . . Schmidt succeeds in bringing a gifted, troubled musician to vivid life.” Little Girl Blue is an intimate profile of Karen Carpenter, a girl from a modest Connecticut upbringing who became a Southern California superstar. Karen was the instantly recognizable lead singer of the Carpenters. The top-selling American musical act of the 1970s, they delivered the love songs that defined a generation. Karen’s velvety voice on a string of 16 consecutive Top 20 hits from 1970 to 1976including “Close to You,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “Superstar,” and “Top of the World”—propelled the duo to worldwide stardom and record sales of more than 100 million. During their short musical career, the Carpenters released ten studio albums, toured more than 200 days a year, taped five television specials, and won three Grammys and an American Music Award. But that’s only a part of Karen’s story. Little Girl Blue reveals Karen’s heartbreaking struggles with her mother, brother, and husband; the intimate disclosures she made to her closest friends; her love for playing drums and her frustrated quest for solo stardom; and the ups and downs of her treatment for anorexia nervosa. After her shocking death at 32 years of age in 1983, she became the proverbial poster child for that disorder; but the other causes of her decline are laid bare for the first time in this moving account. Schmidt will sign copies of Little Girl Blue from 2:00-4:00 on Saturday, January 15, at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 2415 Soncy Road in Amarillo.

Paramore's Hayley Williams Names New Touring Bandmates Two weeks after departed Paramore members Josh and Zac Farro aired their dirty laundry in a scathing blog post, singer Hayley Williams has confirmed that the band has locked in two replacements for its upcoming South American tour. Former Tait guitarist (and brother of Paramore's Taylor York) Justin York, will take over for Josh Farro during the run, while veteran drummer Josh Freese (the Vandals, A Perfect Circle) will replace Zac Farro. Williams revealed the news to fans on Twitter on Thursday (Dec. 30), explaining that "neither Josh freese nor Justin York are joining as members, just helping us for the South American tour." Paramore's tour, which kicks off on Feb. 16 in Brazil, follows the sudden departure of the Farro brothers and a controversial blog post attributed to Josh Farro, which claims that the band's label and management made Williams' bandmates feel like hired guns. "The band was in the dark the whole time," reads Farro's post. "After many meetings between Hayley, her manager and the labels they decided to sign her to Atlantic records. We didn't understand why Hayley was the only one signing the contract since we were told this was a 'band', but we were too young to grasp all of this." Despite the ugly split, Williams, Taylor York and bassist Jeremy Davis are apparently pushing forward with the follow-up to their third album, 2009's "Brand New Eyes." In a later Twitter post, Williams says that York "sent me the 1st official demo for me to write lyrics to. And I am so hopeful and motivated for the future!!"

Kim Kardashian Debuts 'Turn It Up' Song on New Year's Eve Kim Kardashian rang in 2011 by making her first foray into the music world, as the reality TV star premiered her new song at a New Year's Eve party at TAO nightclub in Las Vegas. In a video that captured the song's unveiling, Kardashian is seen giving the crowd a brief introduction before launching into a new song that advises, "Turn it up, DJ!" "I didn't mean to, but I did this song with The-Dream, and it's really fun! I hope you guys like it!" Kardashian, 30, tells the crowd. Reportedly titled "Turn It Up," the song features a steady dance beat, R&B-inflected pop production by The-Dream and a percussion-heavy breakdown. Kardashian, who has parlayed tabloid and reality TV fame (her family is documented on E!'s "Keeping Up with the Kardashians") into a business empire, also alluded to her musical side project on Twitter over the holidays, writing, "2011 is all about trying new things and going for it! I'm starting mine [with] something fun and crazy!" Along with The-Dream, Kardashian is rumored to be working with Kanye West on her forthcoming debut album, after the two were spotted outside a California recording studio. Kardashian also posted a pair of photos on Twitter that are believed to be the first images from her first music video shoot: in one, she sports a white fur and "Bo Derek braids," while the other shows her rocking sunglasses and red highlights.

Alicia Keys Drops New Song 'Speechless'

Mo Motherhood has put Alicia Keys in the mood to write new songs. Hubby Swizz moo Beatz debuted Keys' latest, "Speechless," Bea on hhis website as part of his Monster Mondays. Mo The ballad samples Kanye West's "Devil in a New Dress" and finds Keys doing what she does best: singing about love. wha "I'm at a brand-new time in my life and a brand new feeling, and it's like this little bran guy, man, he takes my breath away," Keys guy says before starting the first verse. The say pian piano-heavy tune gets funky once the chorus kicks in. cho On the chorus, the R&B singer expresses her joy over the new love of her life, singing, "Makes you speechless, baby/ i Don't know what to say/ I'm just speechless, baby/ The poet in me has gone away."

away," as the song fades out. In a video posted on the site, Keys opens up about writing the song, saying, "I always start writing at the piano, because I just feel like it's the best way to get the song out. It makes me take everything else away, and it just makes me, like, I get into it." Beatz also appears in the video, noting that the song is just a fun little gift to Keys' fans. "This should be a treat for the fans," he said. "This will be a treat."

After she gave birth to Egypt, Keys noted that she felt inspired to pen a song for her son. "Every moment is beautiful; delicious even! Every moment I'm learning and living in a way I never have before. Being present in a way I never have before. Existing in moments I never have before," Midway through the track, Eve makes an appearance. The tough rapper shows her Keys wrote in a blog. "Never have I felt so calm, so purposeful in taking the time to soft side, spitting rhymes like, "In the morning when I rise up/ Go to the window truly observe the world around me, to live in it fully and watch it, discuss it, put time and I smile, put my eyes up/ Stare in the toward it. It feels really incredible — so clouds, like, 'Wow, look at my luck.' " peaceful, so complete and long overdue." Keys finishes the track with the song's chorus. She laughs, "You take my breath

Lennon's 'Abbey Road' Suit Sells for $46k in Auction

The white two-piece suit John Lennon wore on the cover of the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album has been sold at auction in Connecticut for $46,000. The suit and other Beatles memorabilia were sold Saturday at the Braswell Galleries' annual New Year's Day auction to an online bidder who wished to remain anonymous. Owner Kathy Braswell tells the Connecticut Post the holiday auction is their biggest event of the year. The suit was custom made for Lennon by French designer Ted Lapidus. Hank Gioiella of Darien paid $5,500 for a rusted green 1972 Chrysler station wagon Lennon and Yoko Ono owned.

Widespread Panic to Celebrate 25th Anniversary in 2011

Widespread Panic is planning to keep "a pretty high profile" in 2011, as the Georgia jam band marks its 25th anniversary. "I plan to do a lot of celebrating," Dave Schools -- who will also be releasing an album by his other band, Stockholm Syndrome, next year -tells Billboard.com. "Twenty-five years is kind of a milestone to keep a band together through all the things we've been through. We've never had a chance to sit back and go, 'God, there's a lot of gigs under the belt.' So it'll be a good time to go, 'OK guys, we've made it a lot farther than

anyone could have imagined'...and take a good, hard look at how we can take this further, how we can continue to evolve as a group of people, not only musically but spiritually and hopefully in a positive way." With "Dirty Side Down" only seven months old, Schools says he doesn't anticipate a new Widespread Panic album in the new year, but he's sure the group will be touring. And he says there's "some pretty serious backing for a major documentary over the course of next year," which the group began filming over Halloween weekend in New Orleans and which will include both newly shot and archival footage. When the celebration isn't keeping him busy, however, Schools plans to focus on Stockholm Syndrome, which he launched in 2004 with Jerry Joseph of Portland's Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons and resumed this year to make a second album, "Apollo" with Schools producing and Widespread Panic cohort John Keane engineering. The album comes out Feb. 15, and quintet will be part of Jam Cruise 9 in January and start a West Coast tour on Feb. 18-19 in San Francisco. More dates will be added to the itinerary soon, Schools says. "We'll be touring as much as we can throughout the year," he promises. "We want to really roll out the carpet and let the word out that there's a new record. We can take this music out and let people hear that it's more than just a hobby side project. It definitely evolved quickly into something that's beyond that. It's living, breathing. It's a band."
