a MeSSagE from snOw Angel

Humanity is currently making the shift from Old Justice/Vengeance Paradigm to New Mercy/Forgiveness Paradigm, the shift that will bring about World Joy. As a messenger, my mission is to teach the Chakra Mirror Math and the Forgiveness Method because forgiveness is the key to opening humanity’s collective heart chakra.

The Chakra Mirror Math reveals the hidden 8th chakra. The 7th chakra is mirrored by the 1st and 7 + 1 = 8; the 6th chakra is mirrored by the 2nd and 6 + 2 = 8; and the 5th chakra is mirrored by the 3rd and 5 + 3 = 8.

This leaves the 4th chakra: What plus four equals eight?

Four. This secondary heart chakra is your soulmate’s heart chakra. Their 4th chakra is your 8th chakra. And your 4th chakra is that person’s 8th chakra.

Each of the four chakra mirrors, the 7/1, the 6/2, the 5/3, and the 4/4, can be approached as a dual steppingstone on a path of Spirit that leads initially to our own open heart, then to our soulmate’s open heart, and finally to humanity’s collective heart chakra opening, which will cause and sustain World Joy. Your 8th chakra is the secret chakra that you influence, and that influences you, whether or not you are in contact with your soulmate or have even ever met that person. Forgiveness causes an open heart chakra which in turn causes, and sustains, the opening of all the other chakras, including your soulmate’s heart chakra. Even if you do not know the identity of your soulmate, the act of forgiveness in your life is the gift of forgiveness to their life.

Before Separation, when our souls were still merged with God in a state of blissful Oneness, we were experiencing ecstasy but we didn’t know it, couldn’t perceive it. God couldn’t allow us to perceive pleasure without also allowing us to perceive pain. This is because Separation from God allows us to feel everything — not just joy — and is the only way we could perceive anything, pleasurable or painful. And God wanted us to be able to perceive the very best thing of all: Oneness. When we were merged into Oneness with God in Heaven, our soul had not yet separated from our soulmate’s soul. Therefore, Oneness with your soulmate is Oneness with God. However, the only way we can ever perceive the depth of such bliss is through making love on Earth where Separation allows us to contrast the moment of Oneness with the moment of Separation before and after.

To know that beauty, that incredible gift of being able to give one other human being a tangible reminder of what Heaven was, and is, here on Earth, during that reunion of souls, is the whole point of existing outside the cocoon of Oneness. The beauty of the merging of our soul with the other half of it, our soulmate’s soul, and the merge of that whole back into the heart of God, is to merge with all of creation, everywhere, to dissolve space and time boundaries and know the inspiration that drives the expansion of the entire Universe. To make love is to create love, and to create love is to know God.

No Punishment One of the most controversial concepts I will teach in my lifetime is that there is no punishment from God for anything. Does this mean that people have the spiritual equivalent of carte blanche to hurt anyone for any reason? Yes, it’s called Free Will. God has given everyone on Earth Free Will in order to ensure opportunities to forgive which allow us to love others not because they have earned it or deserve it but simply because they exist, that is to say, to love them the way that God does.

The cycle of lifetime after lifetime after lifetime of making and repaying karmic debt doesn’t make sense for two reasons. First, the obligation to repay karmic debt would be redundant. Why? Because people who hurt others are already in the worst pain there is: the emotional state of being unable to feel Joy (God’s Love).

That’s why they hurt others. There is no point in enduring a second round of suffering for someone who already can’t feel Love: not being able to feel Love is the worst torture there is. That person is already in agony, right here on Earth, in this lifetime. No punishment gets any worse than that. We as lightworkers can give people a get-out-of-emotional-hell-free pass by forgiving them which transforms our heart chakra into a conduit for the healing power of divine love which causes their heart to open in turn. They will then be able to feel Love again and will no longer hurt others. Why? Because they will no longer feel a desire to. In this way, forgiveness not only heals pain, it prevents future pain of the same nature.

Second, when we affirm that when people hurt us, what goes around will come around or that God will make sure “they’ll get theirs,” we miss the irony of the whole process. If what goes around comes around, then we are getting ours. In other words, we are saying that whatever is happening to us is happening because we did something in the past that earned it. God’s wrath is now upon us, the karmic debt collectors are now knocking on our door. So every time we say, “instant karma’s gonna get you,” we’re saying we’re going to get our comeuppance or just desserts too. And that every time something goes wrong in our lives, it’s because we’re getting it, right now.

The mercy of forgiveness stops that endless cycle of scorekeeping and retribution. God is love; therefore God can’t not love. If the opposite were true, angels would be karmic debt collectors instead of messengers of love.

Your soulmate could be in a very dark place right now: your act of forgiveness could be just the burst of Love that gets them through it.

by Tim Miejan t’s impossible not to marvel at the resilience of the human spirit in times of crises — from the impact of 9/11 and the devastation of the Gulf Coast by Katrina and the BP oil spill, from the Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tuscon and Aurora shootings, from the tornadoes in Tuscaloosa and Joplin, to the greatest depression since the Great Depression.

We’re still digging out from that last one. As far as I know, no one has totaled the collective loss — millions of dollars erased from people’s savings, investments and home equity, millions of jobs lost — all for what? Greed?

And how many souls were lost in the process, people who found it too hard to swim against the undertow? Did the moneychangers just view those bodies as collateral damage?

In 1623, John Donne wrote, “No man is an island…,” a sentiment reminding us that when one of us is lost, we all suffer. That’s because we are all connected. Six degrees of separation.

Those of us who live in small villages and on farms are reminded every day how much we rely upon others to survive. That’s sometimes easy to forget in a metropolis filled with so many people. One can feel isolated and small, just one person among millions of others, and what difference does one person really make, anyway?

You make a great difference, whether you live in Minneapolis or Echo, Minnesota. Each of us yields a sphere of influence that extends far beyond what we can imagine. A single sentence you post on your Facebook page could have a lasting effect for one of your friends.

The example you set by the way you live your life is understood by all who know you. The prayer you say for those who have lost their way may inspire someone to find the light.

Comedian Bill Maher likes to make fun of people who believe in things they cannot see — like God, like the power of prayer. But it’s what we cannot see that makes all of the difference.

Like love. Like intention. Like your inner desire to make a difference. Like the healing energy that comes from a needed hug.

The things we cannot see will make it possible for all of us to reinvent the way we do things so greed does not kill so many people, so pollution does not kill so many people.

Our individual challenge — now — is to transmute fear into love and channel our soul’s intention into our waking reality. It’s why we are alive. a

NATURAL LOVE

Silent Partner

Author’s note: This piece was written following her first 4-day silent retreat in a cabin deep in the woods.

E

ver so slowly it began. She felt a deep stirring within the very depths of her loins, her soul, and her center. The heat of it rose gently at first, arousing her, awakening her, amusing her. “I must have him” she thought.

With this thought, she sent a message to his loins, his soul, and his center. The message was received and perceived…. He was a willing participant in the proposition he was faced with. “How long has it been” he wondered.

“How long since I’ve honored her and shared my passion with her? How long since she has tasted my love for her as cool, sweet drops of my soul upon her body. How long since I have caressed her curves, her hills, her valleys; felt the deep recesses of her? So long, too long!”

He was indeed ready; his erect intention was known to her now, as well. He entered into his foreplay… a glance, a look that lingered…a groan, the lights of his very being cast above and upon her. As his electric fingers touched her, she responded with her own groan….a silent uttering she felt deep down to her core, her center. It cooled her passion only enough for her to long, and almost beg for more. She returned his playful gazes with direct intention. It was clear she wanted more.

He acquiesced to her request and his rhythm increased as he came down upon her hard and with a greater awareness of his own needs. His caresses became intentional, as well, as he lingered in some places and moved quickly, where she ached for his thirst-quenching liquid love.

His moist laps of her body were making her as wet as he was, sharing the experience of being lubricated; washed clean of any distraction. Nothing existed except their union.

She opened herself to him fully as the wave of intensity hit a peak. Suddenly they shuddered together, another lingering gaze was shared and this round of supreme connection was completed.

He held her as she quivered, and the life began to stir in all parts of her; she shared her colors, thoughts and blossoms with him. He looked down upon them with great joy and peace, for he knew he had pleased her. It pleased him deeply to view the energy of this reciprocal event; she showed all of her her beauty to him as a sign of her love and commitment to their endless connection, their purpose and passion.

Over the vast span of four glorious days, he made love to her with varied pace and fervor. She was moist and fruitful from the union for many days afterward, feeling renewed and alive once again. The dusty dryness of her soul was refreshed and she again was strong enough to birth many astonishing creations. “He will be so happy to see me burst forth with color on my cheeks once again,” she mused.

Reluctantly, he made his retreat, promising to return again when he felt her urges and her calls to him. It was his duty, after all, to watch over her and attend to her needs — to listen for her signals and requests. He was in contract to honor the very depths of her soul, her body, her existence.

It was then that I exited my humble, silent abode and strode upon her aroused surface. The evidence of this sacred

union clearly in sight, resting as puddles of their love for all to see. Countless artistic works were strewn about her landscape, and he was reflected within them. She was the mirror, holding his image as a way to keep them closer for a while longer. I viewed them together in splendid wonderment. She held the liquid of his love until it soaked deep within her.

What did not soak in, evaporated, to once again meet him — and he knew he would rain it down upon her some day when she so openly requested it.

Yes, Father Sky made love to Mother Earth, and as the only true witness, I have been changed forever by it. As I was held within this energy, being soaked to my very soul by it, I was made aware that I was being gifted in miraculous ways. I saw Gaia’s surface turn greener, saw the blooms of her union with her lover, felt his humble response in the whisper of his breezes. ’d like to share a few helpful ideas about undoing the ego (the thought of separation from our Source and the idea that we could take on an individual existence or personal identity) and returning to our Source. I hope you’ll employ these powerful tools to experience your reality, which is permanent, rather than just this world, which is temporary.

• Put the Holy Spirit (or your higher power) in charge: This simple act can be done in the morning in ten seconds. Say: “Holy Spirit, you be in charge. You direct my thoughts all day.

If there’s no time for me to ask you what to think then I know you have promised that wisdom will be given me when I need it. What I do is just a result of what I think, and I trust you to Guide me.”

This may seem simple, but it’s a lot more important than most people realize. When you put the Holy Spirit in charge of your day, you are actually undoing the idea of separation, whereas if you do things on your own, you are actually reinforcing the idea of separation without realizing it.

• Practice the original form of prayer: This is a meditation in which you join with your Source and become one with God. Your eyes are closed and you attempt to join in perfect oneness with God. Real prayer is done silently.

Words or thoughts are only used at the beginning to put yourself into a visualized state of mind, one in which you’re ready to join with that which created you. Then for five minutes, join silently with God in your mind in a condition of

love and gratitude. Do this twice a day. It puts your mind “in spirit,” which is what the word inspired means.

Love and gratitude is a great place to be coming from, and leads to the kind of inspired ideas that can guide you through life. It’s really the love that matters. The rest is just a natural after effect.

• Practice true forgiveness: We forgive people not because they’ve really done something, which would make us victims. We forgive people, because they haven’t really done anything, because we’re the ones who made them up in the first place. By overlooking our misperceptions, and instead, thinking of seemingly separate people as being what they really are, which is perfect spirit, we come to think of and experience ourselves that way. THE HEALING JOURNEY Cancer the Disingenuous Disease

What you put on your body counts, too

arly on during my journey of learning about and experimenting with a healthy lifestyle, I came across Paul Bragg’s book, The Miracle of Fasting, and began fasting once a week; I then added two longer fasts a year. In recent years, this habit fell away. Now that I have started fasting again, my body seems “quite at home,” happy, more rejuvenated.

To paraphrase Paul Bragg, he recommends not only being diligent about what you put in your body, but also being meticulous about what you put on your body. Over the years, I have tried and used many hair- and skincare products, always seeking more natural, healthier ones. It has been more than two decades since I have used a deodorant with aluminum in it. (There is research that Alzheimer patients, on average, have higher levels of aluminum in their bodies.) One suggestion given to me in my rounds with the doctors and chiropractors was to avoid deodorant with aluminum. I had been using a natural deodorant stone that had no aluminum. However, since my cancerous tumor diagnosis, I stopped using a deodorant because it may impede my lymph system from working optimally.

Natural methods

Currently, I am eliminating the Stage One Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in my left breast through natural methods and have been writing about this journey in the Edge Magazine since March. It occurred to me it would be important to consider my skin — the largest organ of my body — as part of my regimen for clearing the cancer. It makes sense to use the skin’s natural absorption qualities to help the body eliminate cancer cells and restore my breast tissue to health.

I turned to a friend of mine, Paula Quinlan. She, too, is diligently working her way through health challenges.

We got together to discuss which of the Essential Oils she recommends to someone like myself who has a cancerous tumor, especially breast cancer. Paula suggested several options. Perhaps when I was using them more diligently they may have been preventing an earlier onset of cancer. Of course, I will never know. I let her suggestions simmer in my unconscious, and asked my intuitive side to help select those which would be optimal for my situation.

Is there an ‘all natural’ alternative to antibiotics?

T

here are good reasons to use antibiotic drugs. That said, most physicians and healthcare professionals agree that they are often overused. The overuse of antibiotics has created “superbugs” that are immune to the most common antibiotics. But on a more personal level, antibiotics can wreak havoc on your own immune system and gastrointestinal tract.

The good news is that there is an all-natural alternative to antibiotics that I’ve found to be very effective. If your infection is not life threatening, you may wish to try herbs instead of, or in addition to, regular antibiotics. Of the most-often used herbal anti-infectives — calendula, chaparral, echinacea, goldenseal, myrrh, poke, usnea and yarrow — it is the lovely purple coneflower, echinacea, that I most often turn to.

I find echinacea as effective as antibiotics (dare I say sometimes better than!) if E. angustifolia/augustifolia — but not E. purpurea — is used when you make your own tincture; tincture, not capsules or teas, is used; the root, and only the root, is used; and very large doses are taken very frequently.

To figure your dose of echinacea, divide your body weight by two; take that many drops per dose. There are about 25 drops in a dropperful; round up to full droppers. For example, if you weigh 180 pounds, take 90 drops/4 dropperfuls. There is no known overdose of echinacea tincture. With acute infection, I take a full dose every 2–3 hours. When the infection is chronic, I take a full dose every 4–6 hours.

Many infections can be countered by echinacea alone. But, when there is a deeply entrenched infection in the pelvic area, for example, I add one dropperful of poke root tincture to my one-ounce bottle of echinacea. Poke is an especially effective ally for men with prostatitis, women with chronic bacterial vaginal infections or PID, and anyone dealing with an STD/STI or urinary tract infection (UTI).

There are many good-quality vendors who sell echinacea root. To make your own echinacea antibiotic tincture: Put 4 ounces, or 115 grams, of echinacea cut root in a quart jar.

Fill the jar to the top with 100-proof vodka. Cap tightly, and be sure to label it and keep it safely out of children’s reach.

Wait at least six weeks before use. This tincture is even more potent after one year. a Susun S. Macular Degeneration:

In the eye of the beholder

by Elaine Voboril hear the wild laugh of the pileated woodpecker. I turn off the Mixmaster and peer out the kitchen window. She lands on my suet feeder and pecks away, pieces of suet flying, as she ratchets the frozen tallow. This is a mature female. She does not have the red stripe from her bill back to the throat and her crest is perfectly coifed — not the immature feathers that stick up on a juvenile like the hair of a teenage boy.

I was putting together my mother’s recipe for refrigerator cookies, but it will wait. The woodpecker’s black, white and red markings are displayed flamboyantly against the snow. For a moment I forget there may come a day when I hear the raucous cry, but the red crest and markings of this huge Woody Woodpecker may not be seen by me. I may not be able to pick out the undulating flight as she meanders through the woods to my feeder.

My most recent routine eye exam revealed macular degeneration. I was told that “I should have years” before any symptoms are present. That, however, has not been the case. I see wavy lines in the grid with my right eye and years have not passed — only six months. Straight lines of window frames and art pieces have sharp angles where there are none.

As I continue to marvel at the bird, the sun reflects through the window and reproduces my image. In my 69th year, I have taken on many of my mother’s characteristics. My jowls sag, I wear glasses, and my body frame is similar to hers.

I remember Mother’s diagnosis of macular degeneration. She was 82 and was losing central vision of both eyes.

I took her to a specialist to determine if there were any treatments or assistance for her.

Yellow drops were inserted into Mom’s eyes and tears ran down her face.

“It only hurts for a little while,” said the nurse.

Mom had been hurting since her diagnosis, and that would not cease when burning from the drops lessened.

garden because the physical labor was too much, but not being able to see the perennials bloom or her daily newspaper had suffocating implications.

Losing her vision would be like a killing frost in August.

I watched the pupil of Mom’s eye grow, the blue part getting darker as though the tears were washing out all but the darkest color. With that much blue, she should have been able to see the world.

The doctor prescribed a basic eye test to be given by the nurse. She moved about eight feet in front of Mom, and instructed her to cover her left eye with a hand-held plastic shield.

“Can you see this?”

“No.” She moved closer — to about four feet.

When the nurse was four feet away, Mom could see a shadow with her right eye. She could not see the nurse’s arm or the fingers held up to be counted.

I watched her eyes, the large black pupil and dark blue around it, the sightless beauty trying to see, trying to please, and trying to discern the place where a face should be. Is this what will

happen to me? No birding, reading, or golfing, and will I not be able to see the beloved face of my partner of twenty years?

Since Mother’s diagnosis, I have been taking supplements — Vitamin C and D, beta-carotene, bilberry and lutein — having yearly eye checks, attempting to ward off what now seems inevitable.

I’m signed up for an intensive acupuncture program, and I’ve read about stem cell research for eyes, but apprehension flutters into my daily activities.

The cookies are baked, and once again I hear the rough cry of the big woodpecker two times in one day; I am blessed. I go to the window, ignore the wavy line of the sill, and peer through my binoculars. This is a male, because it has a red line from the bill back to the throat. Homeopathy: A success story at Spark Clinic

by Desirée Brazelton llness never happens on a schedule. It’s a rare occasion when your child gets sick during office hours and you are able to get an appointment with your practitioner. Even if you’re able to reach your homeopath during these hours, it can be difficult to get the remedy that you need. You’re often left with just a few conventional options – urgent care or the emergency room.

While I was in homeopathy school, the realities above were very true for me. I had three small children, and while I trusted homeopathy, I didn’t quite trust my prescribing.

I found myself in a situation where I needed help — and fast. My 2-month-old daughter had developed a high fever and was lethargic. It was around 5 p.m. and I couldn’t reach my homeopath. Being a quite worried and out of options, I headed to the ER with my remedy kit tucked into my purse.

In the end, my daughter got some Tylenol for her fever and was prescribed antibiotics for an infection. Having reached my homeopath by then, I never filled the prescription and took care of the infection with remedies. While it ended up to be quite inconsequential, the whole experience was eye opening for me.

I started thinking about my passion for homeopathy and how much I wanted to bring it to the world, but the current practice model was prohibiting. If you wanted to see a homeopath, you’d set up an initial appointment, which was not only time consuming but expensive. There was no place to go when you had a cough or your child had an ear infection unless you were already seeing a homeopath (and could reach them at that time).

I wanted to make homeopathy available to the larger public, in a way that was familiar. Given my experience with my daughter, I wanted a place where people could go in the evenings and on weekends. This place would have a talented, well-trained staff and an extensive pharmacy.

Thus, in 2009, Spark Clinic was born.

It began with staff of six homeopaths, sharing shifts a few nights a week and on Saturdays treating acute illness.

Surprisingly, our clients were people who had never tried homeopathy before. Some had no idea what homeopathy was. They did know that they were not being heard by their conventional doctors and were not getting well.

We have seen a lot of children at the clinic and have numerous success stories in healing childhood illness. These situations are always great, especially when you are able to stop the cycle – in this case, of ear infections. Ben’s mom brought him to us out of desperation. He had had numerous ear infections already in his 12 months of life and had been to the ER for many of them.

Normally a happy kid, Ben was uncomfortable and screaming with pain. He had a temperature of 104 with bright red cheeks and glossy eyes. His right ear was also bright red.

I gave him Belladonna while they were in the office and additional doses to take at home. The next day his mom called to report that by bedtime that night, Ben’s fever had gone down and he was able to sleep. By that morning, Ben was back to being a happy kid.

Along with homeopathic care, we began to offer massage, shiatsu, acupuncture and Reiki. Realizing that people walk through many different doors as they begin their healing, these modalities complimented homeopathy and allowed us to reach more people.

One evening a woman came to us with a very painful sore throat. She had been having pain for two weeks with no relief. When she described her pain, she said it was like shards of glass in her throat. We also talked about an issue she was having with her husband, which left her feeling resentful and angry. After our half-hour acute visit, I gave her the remedy Nitricum acidum.

After taking her remedy, she received a half-hour Reiki session. By the time our client reached her car that evening, her sore throat was completely gone.

It became clear that we were outgrowing our small building that was tucked away on a quiet street. In late 2011, I was given the opportunity to move into a new and much larger location with storefront signage on a busy street. Thus on January 1, 2012, we opened our new

Walk-in Clinic, Wellness Center and Yoga Studio with a special 108 Sun Salutations class.

Our move gave us the opportunity to expand our hours, offerings and staff. We now offer homeopathic care, holistic medical care, chiropractic, acupuncture, Reiki, cupping, tuning fork therapy, raindrop massage, therapeutic massage and shiatsu.

Yoga, being therapeutic for both mind and body, helps our clients stay active, flexible and grounded. Over 20 classes in many different styles are offered throughout the week.

Acute illness is a wonderful gift to the homeopathic practice. When we are able to treat someone successfully with homeopathic remedies, it opens a door. We are given an opportunity to educate patients about homeopathy, how to listen to their bodies and what healing really means. Five tips to experience presence instead of pressure in chaotic times

n a chaotic world where there never seems to be enough time to accomplish all that we feel needs to be done, what are some new behaviors that can help us meet our goals with clarity and reduced stress? Here are five important guidelines for experiencing presence instead of pressure.

1. Remember to breathe. Slow your breathing down just a little and imagine that your whole body is breathing. Picture every cell of your body in contact with the source of life, and each cell communicating in harmony with all the other cells. Do this for 5 to 10 breaths every half hour or whenever you feel like you have become anxious or hurried.

2. Remember to be grateful. Our minds can fill us with scary thoughts and images, but if this were your last moments of life, would you want those fears to dominate you? Wouldn’t it be time to say “Thank you?” Even when you are the most upset there is always something to be grateful for. Start with what your eyes can see, and thank all the images and colors. Thank the sounds; even the intrusive noises become less annoying when you say, “Thank you.”

Thank all your sensations even if you aren’t feeling well. Being grateful and giving thanks can turn every “NO” into “YES!” 3. Remember to smile. Don’t hoard your smiles and save them for special people. Smile at the check-out clerks and sales assistants. Smile when you hear an angry horn blast in traffic. Smile when you catch your own thoughts being critical of yourself. Let the smile well-up from deep inside and connect you to a great cosmic laugh, like a big, laughing Buddha. Smile at any part of you that wants to tell you that there is no reason to be smiling.

4. The past has many rich memories, but only the present moment is where we are alive. So, pull your mind back to the present, to your breath, to what you can see and hear and give thanks for all of it. If you find yourself dwelling on a memory, especially one that brings sadness, thank the memory and ask it to step back and let you taste the newness of the present moment.

5. Don’t be on your way to your life, hurrying to the next appointment, rushing to check off all the items on your “to do” list. Pause and be in your body, right in the center of your life. ugust should offer something of a respite from the intense energies of 2012. It’s time to recharge our batteries and prepare for the final chapter of this transformational year.

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…If you feel like you’re waging a one-woman war against injustice, take a step back and ask yourself where the fun went. Yes, your cause is probably just, but fighting fire with fire leaves everything burnt to the ground. You didn’t come here to put all the killjoys in their place; you came here to find your own joy.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Put some energy into noticing how most of your so-called problems seem to grow from the same root. The picture this month is clear: the money is there for you and so is the success, but to get to them, you have to find a way under, around, over or through the wall of your family karma. Stop making the same mistakes mom and dad made, and you’ll be well on your way.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)…You may not notice it immediately, but the landscape of your mind has shifted.

You are starting to see opportunity where before you saw only uncertainty. Rather than cursing your short attention span, you are recognizing how refreshing it feels to shift focus and follow your curiosity. Consciously tune into this new way of seeing; dropping your self-imposed blinders opens your eyes to abundance.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Take your time with the money thing, because you need to understand what isn’t working before you can move on to what will work. My struggle with fear, being true

by Kimberly Wencl fter the sudden death of my 20-year old daughter in 2003, amazing experiences of signs and messages from her were all around me. I was led to an amazing medium and teacher and I began to wonder if these experiences were common — did this happen to everyone? I didn’t think so, but I was clueless as to why they were happening to me. I loved them — they brought me much needed peace and consolation — but why? Please keep them coming, I would plead continuously, but again, why? Eventually I quit asking why, and instead, my question became what? “Dear Universe, please show me what you want me to do with these experiences!”

I became quite fearful and guarded. I knew that not everyone would embrace my experiences the way I did; some would hardly see them as “godly.” In fact, I knew there were some who would say my experiences were most likely “of the devil” — even though the Bible is filled with stories of angels and visions and prophesies.

The journey to come to terms with my experiences of signs and messages from the dead, working with mediums and harnessing my own intuition was a rocky one.

I was so fearful that I would be ostracized for sharing my experiences. Several years passed before I could even begin to share them with most of my family – most importantly, my parents. I was quite certain they would think that their oldest daughter was delusional and most likely had “gone off the deep end.”

I would secretly quiz those I came in contact with to see if I felt they were open to hearing my story. At times, it was a very lonely and frustrating exercise in futility.

I had no answers. I only knew that the Universe was in charge, and when the time was right, it would happen. Of this, I was completely certain.

Eventually, my story became “known” and I knew it was only a matter of time before word reached my parents. After all, we live in the same town, only a block away from each other. I knew I needed to be the one to share it with them — not some acquaintance out on the street.

My experiences had even become part of a book, True Stories of Messages From Beyond, and still my parents were in the dark.

It all came to a head at a family reunion. Several of my cousins and an aunt and uncle or two had read my story.

We had no more than exited the car when they approached me and began to share how much they had enjoyed reading my story and how amazing my signs and messages had been.

I would quickly thank them and then pull them aside and whisper that this was all fine and dandy, but hey, my folks don’t know anything about this — so don’t mention it to them okay?

By the end of the day I knew how absolutely ridiculous the situation had become.

It was clear the time had come to share my secrets. I dropped Mom and Dad off at their home and returned to mine. I went into my office and pulled a copy of my

book off the shelf.

I returned to my childhood home, finding my Mom busy in the kitchen and my Dad enjoying an afternoon nap.

“Mom,” I said, “I have something to tell you and you need to sit down. I don’t think you are ready for this, but I wanted you to find out from me and not someone else.” I laid the book in front of her and she read the cover. She opened up the pages and saw my story of Elizabeth.

Much to my complete shock, she proceeded to tell me that she wasn’t surprised. She had googled my name a while back and knew all about it!

I returned home, and no more than an hour later my phone rang — it was Mom. She had already finished reading my story and she told me through her tears how proud and happy she was.

I look back on that time now and all I can do is laugh. I was so sure that my experiences would be discounted that I didn’t give my family a chance. I have now come “out of the spiritual closet” and have only encountered a smattering of souls who did not approve of my experiences, and that’s just fine with me — after all, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. I would never force my personal beliefs on anyone. All I can continue to do is to share my experiences in the hope that perhaps they will help someone else along the way — always with the Universe leading the way. a Kimberly Wencl is a writer and speaker living in southern Minnesota. Fear, blindness and vision

by Jerry Buchmeier ’m going blind. Little by little. Well, maybe.

Five years ago, I had murky glue over part of my left eye some mornings. The ophthalmologist said, “It’s a cataract.” I said, “It comes and goes each day.” He said nothing. I wondered if he heard what I said.

And one day it stayed, and gradually clouded over completely.

Not so bad. A little bit harder driving at night. The only thing I can’t do is play pingpong.

I don’t trust surgery, except maybe as a last, last resort. I understand that surgery amplifies the chances of age-related macular degeneration, which blinded my father.

Now my right eye is getting cloudy. Whoa!

No offense, Milton, but serving by standing and waiting is not my plan.

A few weeks ago, I had to renew my driver’s license. I sat waiting for 45 minutes, praying, “Thy will be done.” When I looked into the machine to test my vision, I could read only four of 10 letters. I mumbled and guessed. A woman next to me said something, so I took my head from the machine, looked at her, then started over. I squinted and could read six of the 10, so again I mumbled and guessed.

The attendant said,” I cannot hear you, please start over.” This time, as I put my head down to the machine, pressure on my eyebrow from leaning on the machine cleared my vision and I was able to read all 10 letters aloud with confidence. When I got home, I tried clearing my vision with pressure on my eyebrow, and couldn’t make it work.

I heard. And, “What you fear, comes.” I fear losing my sight, and think that is what is happening, unless something changes.

I ask God. He says, “My son, My son, you are My beloved son.” I feel more peaceful, but still bewildered. I say, “Is this what you ask of me? “ He answers, “We create together.”

“What are we creating?” I wonder. All the people I know are going through life-changing challenges. Is this 2012, the time of karmic clearing, the preparation for ascension?

I ask Mother Mary. She says, “Dear Jerome, find me in your heart. It is not your karma to be blind. What you are facing is a challenge to be creative in the flow of ever-changing energies and people. This is your challenge, your struggle, your opportunity. The outcome is not certain.” I ask her to help me with peace, confidence, and guidance. And she gently reminds me to find these in my heart.

I ask, “Must I no longer fear losing my sight to clear my vision?”

She answers, “Dear Jerome, we are always with you. Be at peace, and be open in every moment. Use your fear as a question, a key for openness, every moment. Allow the beauty and the power to unfold despite your fear. Fear is nothing to be ashamed of, and need not hold you back.”

Addicted to drama

Shifting from the energy of anxiety to the energy of joy

by Peter Baksa hile living in Beijing, China, recently, I spent my days at the Lama Temple interviewing Tibetan monks for my recently released book, Think Yourself Young. An elder monk approached me one day as I sat next to the Laughing Buddha statue. He told me a story that goes back to the time of Lao Tzu (the founder of Taoism), 400 BCE, that has stuck with me ever since.

It goes like this: A beggar stood at the gates of the temple with his hand out asking for coins from the monks that came and went. On this particular day an elder monk approached the beggar.

The beggar responded by putting his hand out. The elder said, “I have nothing to give you, however, I have a question.

Have you ever looked inside the box that you have been sitting on all these weeks”?

The beggar said, “No, why? It’s an empty box.” The elder monk suggested that the beggar take the time to look inside. He went on to suggest that should he do so, he would find it filled with gold.

The story is analogous to our propensity as humans to look outside ourselves to seek happiness, fulfillment, joy, etc. I spent the first half of my life as a beggar.

tunity, college degree or sports trophy for fulfillment.

I was, like many humans, addicted to the adrenaline rush of the next life situation. Many of us are still beggars, moving from one life situation or person to the next, seeking the next high. Some of us fill our lives with drama and crises, fulfilling our need for emotional stimulation. I found myself attracting partners that needed to be rescued. Charging to the rescue, I would feel needed. This did not require much introspection, and I was not forced to look at myself since the constant drama and crises kept my attention focused and my awareness muted. My excuse may have been love, and my fix, the rush of the situation.

My reality was mostly hidden within a fear-based initiative — fear, because by remaining focused on others, I allowed myself to remain above and outside, always preaching reason and logic to the insane drama that would transpire as a result of another’s less-than-practical thoughts and actions. I could remain safe and untouched from any normal or healthy introspection that a balanced healthy relationship would require of me.

Some might see this as philanthropic, affording affirmation; I call it the hero effect. The reality is that I was stunting my own growth, remaining safe in my

isolation with all the attention placed on the drama, and, of course, the other person’s obvious malaise. From my vantage point, this was a silly exercise in inefficiency. It most certainly detracted from the depth and complexity of the life situations I was attracting. The drama acted like a drug to keep my senses dulled and — like the beggar in the story — outwardly focused. The obvious need for a level-headed, logical approach that I always would bring allowed me to remain unaware of my own addiction, hence lack of introspection seemed normal since I was the sane one, at least from one vantage point. The reality is that we are what we attract. I was as much a part of the drama as anyone. Had I been more aware, I would have seen this.

Most drama and/or ongoing stories that we tell ourselves are typically a way of dealing with pain. They are the story we are addicted to. The drama is our fix.

It is the high that allows us to remain unattached from reality, much like a drug addict or a dry alcoholic.

When confronted with the next drama beginning to unfold, the answer might be to take two steps backwards and quiet the mind. Focus on your breath for a minute or two.

The truth of the interaction will surface, and right action can be taken vs. just any action, or an action derived from an unhealthy pattern of addiction. Most of the time we are fixated by what is in front of us, but, in reality, the causal effect is built into our brain.

A past trauma or life situation that we need to forgive may be the true requisite action for us to be released from this internal loop of action and reaction. Unconsciously, I was hooked on the drama and the resultant opportunity to get my fix.

The moral of the story is for us to recall the monk’s advice to the beggar. Rather than looking outside ourselves for happiness, joy, money, love, we need to begin to look within. Look inside the box we have been sitting on — while here in the natural — for the answers. Look inward.

By looking within, we can find our center. From our mental and physical center, we can care without becoming a caretaker. One can be responsible to people without becoming responsible for them. The net result is that one no longer needs the stimulation of the recurrent drama. In Eastern philosophy, we are taught to substitute dharma — spiritual truth —

for the ensuing drama. We begin to see that small is beautiful and less is actually more.

We begin to appreciate the subtle, profound beauties that exist all around us. We seek the subtle spark in others and seek to help ignite it.

Next time you are confronted with an opportunity for drama, ask what hidden rewards are there for you. Are you using this crisis as an excuse for not facing something else? Are you ready and willing to change this unhealthy pattern? Is there a person or situation from your past that you need to forgive?

On spiritual practice

by Sophie Rose n this age of technology and materialism, when many wonder what tomorrow will bring, the resurgence of spirituality is a normal phenomenon. For centuries, people have turned to religions or other belief systems for support and understanding. Yet, it never resulted in a better world on a global level. An improved personal life perhaps, but not a better planet.

So one can wonder why, after centuries of religious or spiritual teachings on love, forgiveness, presence or service, the world situation has not improved spiritually — why acts of sharing and forgiveness are the exception, not the norm. We can guess that the majority of people weren’t ready for these teachings — that the failure to bring peace, love or the end of suffering on earth is the failure of humanity. After all, the spiritual realm did its job, didn’t it?

So why are people not listening?

The answer lies in each one of us. Our perception of the world is a very personal thing. It involves our mind and the infinite interpretations it can make about our experiences.

This is how most of us lead our lives; we base our actions on what our minds are telling us. Yet, many spiritual teachings tell us to go the other way: love, meditate, watch your mind, forgive, practice compassion and open your heart.

The discrepancy between the teachings and what we do with them is as wide as the gap between faith and belief.

Faith is the mysterious spiritual touch that brings a sacred dimension to our life. Faith doesn’t abide by rules.

Unlike belief, it has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with following one’s heart. Faith is our personal affair with our spiritual Self. Are we in a relationship with our soul or are we cut off from it? We can tell by the quality of our life.

A person who has faith acts from a place of trust and inner knowledge; a person who doesn’t have faith acts from the mind; this person doesn’t trust life and often second-guesses himself. Faith is this indescribable feeling of knowing what’s right for oneself and acting on it. That’s what soul work is about; the inner knowledge of what one has to learn and do in this lifetime. Every soul has its purpose, every heart its calling. The work required to discover it is a spiritual journey some feel drawn to take.

My experience at Bhaktifest It’s not about religion or God, but connecting with love

by Roxanne Sadovsky finally get around to returning Ma’s call a few days after the Fourth.

“So? How was it?” she wants to know.

“Was it fabulous? Were you totally blissed out? Did your boyfriend come? What’s his last name again? Was the Kirtan Rabbi there?”

“It” was (and is) Bhaktifest, a three-day peaceout rooted in yoga, meditation and Kirtan — devotional call-and-response chanting, mostly in Sanskrit. An annual event in Joshua Tree, California, since 2009, Bhaktifest producers responded to the Midwest’s call for consciousness and took the Bhav (spiritual emotion, bliss) on the road, debuting Bhaktifest Midwest June 29-July 1 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Venue-wise, Madison’s Alliant Energy Center is more fairground than folk, a somewhat surreal host for a festival in favor of “raising the consciousness.” A sign greets us late Thursday evening flashing “BhaktiFest Midwest” theatrically against a dark country road with subsequent flashing that KORN will be screaming into Alliant in late July. All the same, we could be in Kansas or Oz or anywhere, because when we park our bikes at Willow Island the next morning, beside two freshly opened technicolor pink lotus blossoms, I’m certain I’ve left the home country of my head and have entered Kirtan-Land.

“It was good,” I tell Ma, my typical response to her call, less melodic than Shri Ram, Jai Ram and Jai Jai Ram, but enough to satisfy Ma’s need to know if my birthday weekend was well spent. I liken it to a Dead Show or the annual Hare Krisna Parade at Venice Beach, stuff she can relate to. I tell her I have a new yoga guru, Mark Whitwell, who actually lives near Venice Beach, so maybe she could take a class? Sadly, this is how I dumb it down.

But how do I explain to anyone, let alone my Jewish mother, that I spent the afternoon of my 42nd birthday in a tacky conference room singing to the Lord? I’m not even sure who the Lord is or which Lord I’m singing to — I don’t think Jews do “the Lord,” but this is just one of the things that bemuses me about chanting.

The irony isn’t lost on me, but a quick peak at my blissed-out Bu-Jew boyfriend beside me in lotus pose confirms this is kosher and I’m back to the bhav in no time.

More concerning is why I am so achingly addicted to something I once wrote off as another empty fad, cloaked in woo. Plus, how does a spiritually challenged Los Angeleno raised tithing to Hollywood have faith in something — anything — without expecting to be disillusioned? I’m digging the bhav, but the bliss scares me to death. How can peace and love be so easy?

“Forget about your analytical mind,” says Pascale LaPoint of Kirtan Path, deemed “jewel of Bhaktifest Midwest” by emcee Shiva Baum, “allow yourself to be there.” The more she talks, the more stereotypical I feel. Our kirtan paths (and likely everyone else’s) are similar: you hear it for the first time and you “just know.” When LaPoint heard Krisna Das for the first time, she felt as though she was “coming home,” which is exactly how I felt hearing her chant “Jai Ganesha” at my inaugural kirtan last summer. Similarly, kirtan helped me out of a fairly serious funk; LaPoint says chanting turned her life around, and before she knew it, she bought a harmonium, taught herself to sing, found a couple musicians on craigslist and called up violinist, Nancy Lemke, with whom she happened to rideshare on a yoga retreat.

Like many of us, LaPoint’s gateway to kirtan was yoga and Krisna Das, “KD” to fans, whose pantheric rasp is pure liquid love, a jungle honey you feel in your spine. Ironically, I feel

completely unloved upon meeting Das in person, following his afternoon workshop, the same one where I melodically consent to “find a way to live in the presence of the Lord!”

I even play the Jew card. “Come on Krisna! You had a Jewish mother, too!”

But it’s no use; he insists that it is not my job to change the world no matter how passionate I am or how messed up it is. Later I realize I’m upset because Das has (unintentionally) called me out on my tendency to seek external verses internal validation.

He emphasizes what we all know, but rarely get: It’s not his or anyone else’s love I need — I need my own. And until we learn to cultivate deep self-love (through chanting, or whatever works), external love will never be enough.

Duh. I’m a therapist. I’ve known this a long time. I write about this stuff. I teach this stuff. But chanting, like yoga and the handful of other woo I do, is still teaching my body to know this.

Das also affirms that love is what chanting is all about — not religion, not God, not anything constructed by the mind. He says when we chant to all those Shris and lords, we are actually chanting to the deities within.

Recently, my therapist aptly likened my need for kirtan to an infant’s need for a response to her cry, in my infant case, a cry for hunger, love, holding….

Perhaps chanting provides the response to the call I have longed to hear answered for forty-plus years.

When I chant along to KD’s chant/love song “Heart as Wide as the World,” I cry huge weeping willowy tears of something mysteriously bittersweet, especially hearing “All I need is to be with you…all my prayers have been heard….” Perhaps the tears are not so much about the longing to have someone sing these words to me and truly mean them (though boyfriend take note), so much as me recognizing the sweetly ringing nectar of my own voice tenderly humming down my throat, before settling to safely rest against my own widening heart. a Roxanne Sadovsky, MA, MFA is a Twin Cities freelance writer, teacher and healer. Your outlook on life shifts to incorporate spiritual realities and your inner transformation is mirrored in the outer world.

Every spiritual journey leads to a better understanding of your place in the world. Spiritual practice helps you connect with your Self, which is a drop in the sea of consciousness.

As you connect with consciousness, you slowly learn that there is an intelligent design underlying your life, and that the spiritual realm contains all you need to know. So why not pick up a spiritual practice?

How do we define spiritual practice? A spiritual practice is the very simple act of getting in touch with your Self — not with your mind, your feelings or your body, but with this sense of presence or being behind them. How to go about it is a matter of personal preference.

Remember, religion or traditions do not matter, except to your heart, so it is very important to follow your intuition, not your mind (or another’s). Practice will make all the difference.

Spirituality is an experience, not an intellectual pastime.

Discouragement is common; the best way to deal with it is not to expect anything from your practice. Flowers only bloom in the right season, provided they were well taken care of.
