orget about drinking in parks. The Sobriety Ordinance of Davao City was approved on its third and final reading on Tuesday. The ordinance will take effect after its publication. Councilor Maria Belen Acosta, councilor of district one said that with this ordinance there will be legal basis for the rules implemented in parks that prohibits the consumption of alcoholic beverages. “If you disturbed the peace of other people, then you should be responsible for it, you should be accountable for it,” said Acosta on Tuesday at the Sangguniang Panglunsod. This ordinance’s general

provision states that the consumption of alcoholic beverage in public streets, sidewalks, public parks, playgrounds and other public areas is prohibited. The consumption of the same drinks aboard any motor vehicle found or parked within the prohibited areas also constitutes a violation of the ordinance. Acosta said that the difference of this ordinance to the liquor ban ordinance is that the liquor ban ordinance only

prohibits the buying and selling of liquor at a speci�ic hours whereas the Sobriety Ordinance is in effect all the time. The consumption of alcoholic beverages or intoxicating beverages in public streets, sidewalks, public parks and playgrounds are prohibited other public areas such as private areas generally open to the public such as parking areas, green spaces, gardens, playgrounds and uninhabited private places without the permission of the owner such as beaches, empty lots, abandoned house or building is also prohibited. “It’s better to have a legal basis so that those people who are violating this will be given

consequences instead of just reprimanding them. This was experienced by our barangay especially our barangay tanod” she said. Exempted from the ordinance are customers of any establishment whose business is authorized or permitted by the City Government to use a portion or part of the stress, sidewalk or public park; Special occasions or festivities that shall be authorized or permitted by the City Government or the Barangay Concerned.
