What a successful Science Week! And an AMAZING fundraising effort! THANK YOU! Thank you to all the family members/friends who came along to visit classes during Science Open Week last week. Approximately one hundred and twenty visitors came along to spend time in classes! The Science Trail throughout classrooms was really successful! We do appreciate you coming along to spend time with students and participate in the activities with them. Thank you also to those members of our community who came along to speak with students; this provided valuable learning experiences! A photographic record will be uploaded to the newsletter folder on our website this week. Science-a-thon: We have now exceeded our target of $8,000 and have collected $10,067.50 to date, which will provide new science and digital equipment for classes; teams are currently completing their ‘wishlists’.

Sincere thanks to our wonderful community for participating so wholeheartedly in our curriculum fundraiser!

Eden-Albert Speech Contest Congratulations to Mackenzie (Year Five) who won Edendale’s Speech Contest this year. Although unplaced, Mackenzie was a wonderful representative for Edendale at the Eden-Albert Speech Finals held at Balmoral School last week. You gave an amazing, thought-provoking speech and we are so proud of you! Well done!

ICAS Writing Skills Special congratulations go to Katie and Joshua in Year 6 who recently received High Distinction in the ICAS Writing Skills Competition! Congratulations also to Jade and Lily in Year 4 and Alex and David in Year 6 who each received Distinction. Well done to all, we are extremely proud of you! Great work! Twenty students from Edendale participated and were awarded two High Distinction, four Distinction, nine Credit certificates and one Participation. Well done to all participants! See over the page for further information.

‘Closed for Good’ at Garden to Table Thank you to the large group of volunteers from BNZ who are working with our Garden to Table programme at Edendale today as part of their ‘Closed for Good’ Community Projects Day. We really appreciate your support with putting together our newest garden beds and making cupcakes for an Edendale fundraiser as well as your work with our students today! ‘Closed for Good’ is a wonderful initiative and we are fortunate to be a part of the day!

Edendale Saturday Netball Netball season is now over; we had four teams participating on Saturdays this year. Our very special thanks to our parent managers, coaches and supporters for their commitment, for volunteering and for ensuring our students were able to participate in this very popular weekend sport. We really appreciate the time and effort that goes into netball each year. We wouldn’t be able to do it without you! We had one team participate in A Grade (moved up from B Grade); two teams participated in C Grade (Edendale B came third equal in the second round) and one team in D Grade this year (Edendale D came fourth). In 2014 we plan to include Year Three students in Saturday netball if we have enough interested players! Thank you once again!

The Ministry of Education is currently revising our accommodation needs and may provide additional classrooms when the Year 3-4 block is rebuilt. You may pre-enrol when your child turns four. Please note that this does not mean your child can start school before they turn five!

School Information • Programmes • Notices This week we welcome Year Four to Garden To Table In gardening class we are learning to build a garden bed from scratch using recycled materials. We will be planting potatoes as they are a great crop for starting off a new bed, we are adding a lot of organic material (compost) that they thrive on and potatoes help break up the soil and add vital nutrients for future crops. Now is a great time to plant your spuds (we found that Swift and Agria potatoes are two great varieties), just in time to have spuds on your table for Christmas lunch! Don’t forget to plant your mint as well! We had a bumper crop of beetroot and carrots that we turned into colourful dips (Moroccan carrot and beetroot yoghurt dip) to go with flatbread and to top it off we made beetroot and chocolate cupcakes—who knew what a versatile vegetable beetroot was! This continues our ever expanding knowledge of how we can use a vegetable in many different and exciting ways. We also discussed how important it is to read a recipe properly when baking so that we get delicious results. I am sure at home you will now have many able and adventurous cooks at hand! This week we are making Vietnamese rice paper spring rolls with our cabbage, spring onion, mint and carrots - a great nutritious dish to welcome in spring! Sarah and Jodie

School Information • Kabila Authors • Advertisements How to make Oobleck

In Week Four Mr Swain visited Room 10 to talk about rocks. He is a geologist. We looked at different types of rocks under a magnifying glass to see holes, bubbles and crystals.

To make oobleck you will need: Water Cornflour Measuring cup Tray Put two cups of cornflour in the tray. Pour one cup of water in the tray. Mix the cornflour and the water together with your hands. I liked it because it was like sticky glue. By Amy, Room 8 Shadows Shadows, shadows we see shadows everywhere and every day. Shadows, shadows what do you see? I see people in front of me. Shadows, shadows what are you? I am a thing that follows you.

On Thursday Kazik’s dad, Mr Swain, came to Room 10. He showed us some different types of rocks. One had crystals and one was a fossil of a leaf. By Fatima, Room 10
