In December members of the Lawtons Progressors enjoyed several activities that were educational, community - minded, as well as fun. The focus of the business meeting was devoted to preparing for the Erie County Public Presentations events held in February and March. Much information was shared with members on how to develop a well - organized presentation. Following the meeting participants shared the treats (holiday and nutritional) thy brought. Afterwards several projects were offering including making gifts for our friends at Absolut Care of Eden and creating creatures out of recycled light bulbs.

In the small town of Jericho, Vermont a Christian named Wilson Bentley read the verse above. In the late 1800's he discovered a way to photograph snowflakes that landed on black velvet. Using primitive camera equipment he photographed over 5000 snowflakes in his life. Before he died in 1931 he concluded from his research that "no two snowflakes are alike." NFVB 16U Gold Places 2nd at Niagara Cup Tournament held in West Seneca

On January 7th, members of NFVB 16U Gold volleyball team placed second in the 18U Niagara Cup Tournament held at Buffalo Niagara Court Center in West Seneca. Rather than play in the 16U tournament, the 16U Gold team was moved into the 18 year old bracket for the tournament.

In the first round of pool play, the team went 4 and 0, sweeping both Lockport 18U and Rochester 17U. Teams were then regrouped for a second round of pool play. In that second round, the team went 3-1 in game play, sweeping Lockport 17U and splitting with NFVB 17U. With an overall pool play record of 7-1, the team was moved into the Gold Medal Playoff bracket. In their quarterfinal match, NFVB 16U Gold sweep another Lockport 17U team, 25-22, 25-23 to win the best of three match.

In the semifinal, the team defeated a team from Rochester, but, it didn’t come without a fight. Playing against a team from the Roc City Volleyball Club, NFVB dropped a close first game of the match, 23-25. However, they stormed back to win the second game 25-18, to force a third game.

In the deciding game, 16U Gold pulled away, late, to win 15-8.

In the finals, the team locked horns with Lockport 17U. Lockport was just too much for 16 Gold, as they lost in the finals 18-25, 13-25. Lockport’s exceptional team consists of numerous members of the Lockport High School team, that won the Class A Sectional Championship this past November.

The team plays next in Rochester the weekend of January 13th-14th in the Can Am Tournament. NFVB will play teams from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec during the 2 day tournament. A strong finish in the tournament would earn the team a bid to the National Championships in Phoenix in July.

Players who competed on the team this past weekend (and their hometowns) are: Jake Basinski (Eden), Joe Botticello (Grand Island), Saferino Dour (Buffalo), Jake Janus (OP), Greg Jubulis (OP), Nate Lippitt (OP), Alex Overhoff (Eden), Teddy Payne (Clarence), Nate Petrik (West Seneca), Nick Thomas (OP) and Josh Williams (Eden). The team is coached by Robert Pierce and Justin Waldorf. ________

How To Ace Job Interviews When Switching Careers

Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement.

Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible.

Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. · Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career. · Use your contacts to your advantage. Even if much of your experience won’t transfer to your new career, your professional network might still be valuable to a prospective employer. The longer you have been working the larger your professional network likely is, so highlight those contacts in your interview and illustrate how you can put them to good use should you be hired. · Showcase how you have adapted in the past. Much of the business world moves at a breakneck pace. That pace has become even faster thanks to advancements in technology that routinely affect how businesses operate.

Even if you have never before changed careers, that does not mean you have not adapted to change. Sharon Marlene Murphy

Sharon Marlene Murphy of Elmwood Park, Illinois died on December 15th, 2017, surrounded by family members.

The cause was complications from diabetes, a disease Sharon battled for more than 40 years. Sharon was born on Christmas day, 1953; the third of six children. She is survived by her adoring husband, Gilmar Gramajo and their son, Noah. She is predeceased by her loving parents, Marjorie (nee Ryther) and Eugene Murphy, her sister Melanie (Dr. Fred Luongo) and her nephew C. Michael Flint. In addition to her husband and son, Sharon is survived by her siblings R. Warren Flint (Nancy), Catherine (Jon Gailmor), Michael (Karmel) and Sean. Sharon also had many nieces and nephews and a great-niece who will miss her immensley and many cousins, especially her beloved friends Pamela Savage Roglich and Carol McTigue. Sharon was raised in Eden, NY and graduated from Eden Senior High in 1971. She attended SUNY Buffalo, studying history and political science. She had a discerning eye and was always interested in the creative arts and gardening.

She created warm and inviting homes for her family and friends, framed by the beautiful gardens she maintained. She worked in the hospitality business both in Buffalo and Chicago, working in some of the finest establishments in both cities, including the Rue Franklin and Olivers in Buffalo and Charlie Trotters, Trio and Les Nomades in Chicago. For a number of years Sharon owned and operated a store named Arcadia, in Williamsville, NY, combining her love of flowers and the decorative arts. Sharon will be missed by her whole extended family who will fondly remember her beautiful voice and smile and her love of adventure. For those who wish to remember Sharon, contributions to the American Diabetes Foundation, the Les Turner Foundation or Seasons Hospice would be greatly appreciated. ________

Charles C. Boltz

Charles “Chuck” Clarence Boltz, 77 of Lake Worth, FL passed away at his home on Saturday morning December 30, 2017 with his daughters by his side. He was born March 14, 1940, in Angelica, NY. Chuck graduated from Orchard Park HS in 1958 and is a veteran seaman of the US Navy serving from 19581960. Chuck and Beverly (Briggs) were married for 25 years and raised their three daughters, Connie, Kim and Cheryl. He was employed at Mecca Farms from 1977 until he became ill in 2017 and could no longer work. He was a simple, hard working man always providing for his family and a dedicated employee of Mecca Farms.

Chuck is survived by his daughters, Connie L. Tuller, (Ed) of West Palm Beach and Cheryl A. Boltz of Port St. Lucie. Granddaughters Kimberlyn and Katelyn McCoy. Brother David Boltz, (Gail) of Jamestown, NY and nephew Gregory Boltz of Hamburg, NY. He is preceded in death by his father Clarence Boltz, his mother Vera Hilbrecht Boltz, his wife Patricia A. Boltz and his daughter FHP Trooper Kimberly A. Hurd.

A celebration of life will be held at the Eagle Grill on Sunday January 14, 2018 from 2 – 4 PM located at 4636 Jog Rd, Greenacres FL 33467. Burial service will be held graveside at Our Lady Queen of Peace on Monday January 15, 2018 at 11 AM located at 10941 Southern Blvd, Royal Palm Beach FL 33411. In lieu of flowers those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider making a donation in Chuck’s memory for a memorial bench.
