YEAR IN REVIEW

Each year, Sarasota County’s economy is shaped by new opportunities, bold investments, and the strength of our collaborations. In 2025, we worked alongside partners locally, statewide, and internationally to drive growth and innovation. From breaking ground on new business parks to welcoming industry leaders and expanding our global reach, this year marked significant progress. These milestones reflect our shared commitment to ensuring Sarasota County remains a dynamic and competitive place to live, work, and invest.

October & November 2024

As the new fiscal year began, Sarasota County faced the impacts of storms Debby, Helene, and Milton, which heavily affected coastal businesses. Ahead of Milton, we worked with county business groups to monitor damages and coordinate support. We connected with 20 key representatives across major business parks to assess needs; providing a full overview of affected areas within 24 hours. To aid recovery, we partnered with Visit Sarasota County on the Support The 941 campaign, encouraging local promotions and events to remind residents and visitors that businesses were open and ready. Alongside County, City, and Chamber partners, we conducted business walks reaching over 250 small businesses. These efforts earned two Florida Economic Development Council awards; Pivot and Persist and Best in Show: The Melissa Medley Creativity Award

December 2024

December focused on turning back on business attraction efforts and letting the world know Sarasota County is serious about business growth. We focused on building critical relationships to attract new investment. The EDC and City of North Port attended the Area Development Fall Consultant’s Forum in Coral Gables, where we networked with 24 leading site selectors and corporate real estate consultants. These professionals guide corporate location decisions, and we used the opportunity to highlight our business advantages, available sites, and appeal to diverse industries. Conversations also addressed broader investment trends and site readiness, reinforcing our strengths as a prime business destination. By building and maintaining these relationships, we are ensuring Sarasota County remains top of mind for corporate expansions and relocations. December’s efforts laid important groundwork for 2025, setting the stage for continued growth and diversification of the local economy.

January 2025

January set the tone for global engagement and local innovation. At CES, the world’s largest electronics show, partnering with SelectFlorida gave us the inside scoop on companies considering Florida. Before the event, we contacted over 200 tech companies that were going to attend the show, then we partnered with the State of Florida to meet with 65 international firms. Locally, we sponsored the first Sarasota Tech Summit with more than 300 attendees, showcasing the region’s growing innovation ecosystem. We also engaged with peers at Florida Power & Light’s annual Illuminations event and toured the 35 Mules startup accelerator to learn best practices for supporting entrepreneurs. Our Sarasota County Connect workshops continued to serve the local small business community, with more than 400 participants. The month concluded with a Chair Advisors Roundtable featuring insights from the Federal Reserve on credit, inflation, and workforce issues, connecting our business leaders to the data they need to make the right decisions.

February 2025

February emphasized leadership and long-term strategy. EDC President and CEO, Erin Silk, attended the International Economic Development Council’s Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., with sessions on AI, foreign investment, and more. Locally, the EDC advanced its business park growth strategy with a new promotional video showcasing rezone and development ready sites. Current projections include 762K square feet of new business park over the next five years and 5.4M over the next decade, ensuring the capacity to diversify industries and attract jobs. Josh Ewen, Vice President Economic Development, represented Sarasota County at the Urban Land Institute’s Tampa Bay Trends Conference, discussing how next-generation business parks strengthen competitiveness and resilience. February’s efforts demonstrated the County’s ability to pair national leadership with local action, building the infrastructure and opportunities necessary for a robust economy.

March 2025

March highlighted Sarasota County’s role as a regional economic leader. Erin Silk joined her peers from Tampa Bay, Bradenton, and Pasco for a panel discussion with the Tampa Society of Real Estate Professionals, focusing on trends such as slowing growth from rising cost, and a goal to increase interest from international headquarters. At The Patterson Foundation’s Digital Access for All Symposium, Josh Ewen and partners from Sarasota.Tech and the Florida High Tech Corridor explored the importance of innovation partnerships, noting the Sarasota region is projected to gain 2,300 new tech, finance, and insurance jobs over the next five years. We also participated in Tampa Bay’s Synapse Summit, connecting with entrepreneurs and industry leaders to better link our regional startup ecosystem. March reinforced the County’s commitment to competitiveness, innovation, and preparing for significant industry growth.

April 2025

April was a month of outreach and brand building. We partnered with the City of North Port at a major trade show in Nashville, meeting with 280 exhibitors and hundreds of attendees to promote our County’s advantages for manufacturers and suppliers. At home, we celebrated the launch of our refreshed brand with a community event that brought together public and private partners. The rebrand also drew regional recognition in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, which highlighted the County’s maturing economy and the growth of industries like creative technology and ocean-tech. To reinforce our updated image, we unveiled a redesigned website, emphasizing the Board of Directors’ strategic priorities and the value of our Interlocal Partnership. Together, these efforts enhanced Sarasota County’s strong business-friendly brand and set the stage for continued growth.

May 2025

In May, we showcased our global reach and local strengths. At the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C., we pre-targeted 75 international firms, secured 30 in-person meetings, and engaged with international firms and government leaders to discuss Sarasota County’s strong pro-business, pro-quality-of-life and unique opportunities for business expansions. Locally, a Sister Cities delegation from Siming District, Xiamen, China, explored opportunities in software technology and advanced medical manufacturing. Our annual Economic Outlook drew 350 attendees and featured leaders who highlighted our top ranking in Florida for in-migration of 25–34-year-olds, a key workforce demographic. We also promoted Sarasota County’s creative economy, with the Film & Entertainment Office launching a national video campaign spotlighting the County’s beaches, parks, and cultural assets as incredible film and photography locations. Check it out at www.filmsarasota.com. May showcased Sarasota County’s unique balance of global connections, strong workforce appeal, and creative assets.

June 2025

June brought recognition, collaboration, and expanded partnerships. Partnering with Florida Trend, we hosted roundtable discussions with over 70 business, government, and education leaders on tech growth, capital investment, and workforce shifts. A Coastal County Collaboration meeting with Lee County leaders focused on business disaster resilience and recovery planning. We further strengthened our global visibility by joining the new SelectFlorida Partner Program, aligning with the state to boost international outreach and attract new businesses. Together, these milestones reflect our resilience and commitment to shaping a diverse, future-ready economy.

July 2025

July marked progress in Sarasota County’s business park development with Tavistock Development beginning construction on a 93k square foot facility in Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park. This new space will serve manufacturers, distributors, and medical technology firms. Also, Erin Silk emphasized the connection between education and economic growth through a podcast with Jennifer Vigne of the Education Foundation of Sarasota County. Their conversation focused on strengthening the workforce pipeline through education. Internally, we welcomed two new staff members: Paul Littleton and Amy Freese. Both bring valuable experience from Atlanta and Minneapolis, bolstering the organization’s capacity. With projects breaking ground, partnerships in place, and new leadership on board, July highlighted our role in building Sarasota County’s competitive edge for the future.

August 2025

August underscored Sarasota County’s economic momentum with growth across business parks and key industries. Over the past three years, we have supported the development of 535k square feet of new business park development, and Sarasota County successfully rezoned 43 new acres of shovel-ready sites. Local companies also expanded: D-Trans opened a $6.8M headquarters creating 50 new jobs, and DMSI doubled its facility to 15k square feet. Collaboration was also front and center at our workshop with the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners, Visit Sarasota County, and the Arts and Cultural Alliance. Together, we explored how tourism, arts, culture, and economic development align to attract talent, investment, and opportunity—reinforcing Sarasota County’s reputation as Florida’s Cultural Coast® and a premier place to live, work, and play.

September 2025

Innovation and collaboration took center stage the last month of our year. Our 21st Annual Meeting brought together 400 attendees including investors, business leaders, and elected officials, to celebrate our strategic plan progress and honor outstanding leadership. Rick Severance, President of Wellen Park, received the Clyde Nixon Business Leadership Award, and Mike Simas, President & CEO of the Florida Council of 100, shared statewide insights on economic competitiveness. We reported that Sarasota County is solidifying our position as a destination for emerging technology. To continue building this momentum, we launched our new Tech-Innovation Council, aimed at bringing together strategic partners that will help guide us in ways we can strengthen the region’s innovation ecosystem. Lastly, we hosted an inbound mission with state partners from FloridaCommerce, SelectFlorida and FPL, spotlighting Sarasota County’s assets and business-ready opportunities for future growth.
