when, in Castelvetro di Modena, a research laboratory was opened, involving experts of materials and mechanical engineering performing mechanical testing on specific materials in the field of advanced mechanics for complex products with high added value. The research field of materials are raising an increasing interest in the light of their wide use in various sectors such as

the aerospace, automation, food packaging, the production of goods for personal care, biomedical, pharmaceutical. Since, in the course of their employment, such materials are subject to mechanical deformation, measurement and analysis of their properties is an effective tool to prevent problems in the industry. Yet, the laboratory of Ca’ di Sola is only the first step, because the structure will be

transferred in the next two years in a Research Campus of 37 thousand meters in the green hills of Modena in the municipality of Castelvetro di Modena. Here a group of laboratories will be operative managed in an integrated manner with the parent Schio and the main reference centers Emilia, national and international. In the context of new site, office units of study will be based mainly on the analysis

and development of new materials and enabling technologies (rapid manufacturing, tribology, corrosion studies of materials and structures, special materials characterization). A group of engineers will be dedicated to the integrated design of mechanical systems with high efficiency and low cost (design to cost). In addition, a special section will be dedicated to the installation of a series of test benches for testing new solu-

tions in the advanced mechanics. The location of the laboratory within the Emilia region, is the scenario of numerous business ventures that will expand and strengthen visibility of the group in the domestic market and much more. â–ˆ www.ecorcampus.com

strategy based on an innovative industrial model identifies the new Ecor Research. The company has recently entered into the world of simulation of industrial processes, Aerospace and Defense, completely rethinking its business model and its organization. Management policies driven by total quality and design to cost, the production of few batches with high added value, an entire department dedicated to the engineering and R&D are among the main factors that have led to a rapid and effective penetration of the new markets, with synergy and integration. The company decided to invest invests decisively and constantly in training and

high technology as additional competitiveness element in current and future markets. In this context, if on the one hand, there is a continuous effort for the growth of core competences, on the other hand, the company is developing a network of collaborations and projects with universities and research centers, with a synergy between skills and capabilities perspective; from basic research to the development, prototyping and industrialization. Thanks to the structuring of the production and management chain according to cutting-edge methods, such as Total Quality Management and World Class Manufacturing, it was possible to transfer this company mindset, in fields other than the one of automatic machinery, acquiring high

level certifications and awards such as the NADCAP for welding, heat treatment and non-destructive testing and certifications by some of the leading international players in the aerospace sector. Ecor Research production model is evolving towards an integrated system of production & development, in which the R&D activities are not considered patrimonies merely of the company, but are performed and directed in close collaboration with its key customers The company evolution, therefore, is based on a gradual growth of the development area, supported by and integrated with the production area. This integration results in greater flexibility, which is pivotal in opening new markets. â–ˆ

To know █ Total Quality Management (TQM) was born in Japan in the 50ies, and is a company organizational standard, based on “ongoing improvement”. All company employees, regardless of their position and level of responsibility, must be involved in reaching the following objectives: organizational efficiency, waste (material, resources and time) reduction and customer satisfaction. The

company doesn’t therefore produce only products or services, it produces quality. █ World Class Manufacturing (WCM ) is a best practice standard which was developed in the USA in the 90ies and spread to Italy in mid 2000. It integrates Lean Manufacturing with Total Quality Management (TQM), introducing the concept of “Zero defects”. WCM identi-

fies some main areas of activity whose problems are sorted out by ad hoc cross-functional project teams, by analising data through statistical tools. The aim isn’t to find a solution, but to assess and eliminate the root of the problem. Zero defect, zero breakdowns, zero incidents and zero stock, for a general cost reduction.

When potable water makes its first appearance Ecor Research and its partner Aerosekur presented to the Italian Army Corps of Engineers a project of the mobile water treatment unit, during the “Smart Sapper 2015”

E

cor Research attended the event “Smart Sapper 2015” organized in Rome from the Italian Army Corps of Engineers. Prominent authorities of the State took part to the event, such as the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Mr Domenico Rossi, and the Chief of Staff of the Italian army, General Danilo Errico. In the first part of the day, exercises of the different departments of the Army took place, using dozens of specialist tools, procedures and operational capabilities for the use both in national territory and international missions have been put to the test. In a second step, suppliers presented to the army officers the latest news. Among the exhibitors, there were also Ecor Research and Aerosekur, a manufacturer of advanced equipment and survival systems for critical missions within the Aerospace and Defense field.

14

| Il Leone di San Marco - September 2015

Ecor Research and Aerosekur have presented a project in partnership. The program concerns the construction of a mobile water purification unit, a plant intended for the treatment of water, including its purification, in the context of interventions in support of the population affected by natural disasters, to which frequently the Corps of Engineers takes part, and military interventions. The objective of Ecor Research and Aerosekur is to facilitate the transportation of the equipment and make it parachutable, in order to facilitate their use in hostile territories and with different environmental characteristics. To meet these requirements, the design team has conceived several water treatment modules with specific functions. Each of these blocks is autonomous and can, thus, be easily transported by decreasing the

maintenance costs of the mobile unit and simplifying its use, since it is not required authorized personnel. The plant can produce 1,000 gallons per day of drinking water from a natural source such as a river, a lake, a sea, a well, satisfying the need for feeding and personal hygiene of about 20-30 people. Another new feature of the project is the new-patented technology for water treatment using the process of photo-ozonolysis, ensuring greater water purity. The design phase lasted about one year and a half and in the coming months the prototype plant will be presented to the corps of Engineers. In particular, Ecor Research has been involved in the project for the industrialization of the system and the definition of complex processes. █

IN THE WORLD

To know â–ˆ The mobile water purification unit is a water treatment plant for the water used in interventions to support people affected by natural disasters, to which the Italian Army Corps of Engineers frequently takes part and military interventions. The equipment consists of: a power module intended to draw water; the desalination module which removes salts from

brackish water; the form of condensation which turns into water the moisture in the air; the module for purifying water and make it drinkable; the auxiliary module in which are present the utilities (power unit, compressor and control panel). â–ˆ The photo-ozonolysis is an advanced oxidation process based on the combined action

of a powerful oxidant, ozone, and ultraviolet light. Unlike a simple ozonation or a classic UV irradiation, sterilization of the water is faster, more complete and effective towards all the pathogenic and non-pathogenic micro-organisms, and it is more safe from the purity point of view.

E

cor Research has started a University collaboration in order to gain expertise on how to use hardware and software systems for test rig data control and acquisition and to test a given food packaging machine component. Test rigs subject components to mechanical, thermal and chemical stress, thus replicating what happens in a real work environment. These tests are also performed in order to analyze pieces which are used for the same purpose but are made of different material, so as to determine which is more suitable. Test are therefore a guarantee of product reliability to the client and, by defining a product life-cycle, they enable us to properly schedule maintenance operations on the component. As I’m a near-graduate of second level degree in Energetic Engineering at Università degli Studi in Padua, I was given the opportunity to work on this project by Giorgio Pavesi, professor of the Industrial Engineering Department. I afterwards illustrated this experience in my degree thesis, which I presented last July. The research, which started last January, is on the design of a transmission belt test rig that simulates the functioning of a part

of a food packaging machine. In particular, and thanks to a mass it is connected to, this belt enables the package to exit the machine through a conveyor with a well-defined position profile of motor. As the belt tends to break after a given number of hours, this test rig aim is to collect data so as to define its lifespan and therefore schedule future maintenance operations. The test rig is made up of a panel board and a motor unit with belt drive transmission, and data of belt deterioration are collected by two force sensors, two temperature sensors, motor torque values, acceleration, currents and voltage. The test rig has been operating since March and it soon will be possible to analyse data. I would like to thank in advance all the colleagues who have supported me in this project: Fabio and Giovanni Bao, Alberto Solani, our consultant Maurizio Bollini, Alberto Renzi, Andrea Albanello, Lorenzo Gentilini, Luca Smiderle, Nicola Pozzan, Fabio Battistella, Paolo Romare, Pietro Pranovi, Luca Silvestrini. â–ˆ Davide Marin Engineering

joined “I*Can” in 2007 after I decided to give up basketball, which I’d been playing for several years, and I’ve been President of this association for a year now. “I*Can” promotes initiatives for social inclusion and participation of disabled people through exercise, as a means of gaining psychophysical well-being. With this purpose, it schedules two tennis training sessions a week. It works according to the method and regulations of Special Olympics Italia, an international training and program designed for young and adult athletes, with limited intellectual abilities. “I*Can” is a proper tennis school and it is managed and promoted by a first grade

level FIT(Italian Tennis Federation) tennis instructor, who is current member of the federation. So far the number of special athletes has exceeded 20 people, and they are all supported by a group of young volunteers like me, who train with them and help out instructors during training sessions and events. Matches are arranged according to athletes playing level and each of them is paired with a playing partner who is trained properly in order to make matches a more inclusive experience. All boys and girls who are part of the project are aged between 17 and 25 years, and are disabled by mental disorders of different kind, which often affect physical ability and lead to a loss of independence.

Furthermore, besides tennis we took up swimming last September and next winter we will put ourselves to the test with skiing as well. Evey year our association takes part in tournaments in the North of Italy and in a National Special Olympics event, which has been held in San Giovanni Lupatoto (Verona) this year. We have recently organized a Unified Doubles Tennis Tournament at a sports facility in Breganze. Even though we can rely on qualified instructors and staff, we are not aiming at turning disabled boys and girls into professional athletes, but at promoting social integration and contributing to increase their independence. This can also be im-

PEOPLE proved during summertime when the guys, who aren’t busy with their routine training, can choose whether to keep doing sport autonomously. Keeping in contact with these special athletes is really rewarding. It is amazing to see how there are happy with very little and aren’t demanding at all. They put in a great effort when competing and can’t hold back emotions which prove how valuable sport is to them. There is another aspect which surprises at every single event and which should set an example to each of us, and this is fair play. Whether they are winning or losing the match, they shake hands with and hug their opponent at the end. If you would like to join the association or visit us during our initiatives, you are welcome. You will have the chance to learn to play a sport and above all to do a good deed which will pay you back with lots of emotion. █

Saturday 22nd August, Sergio Rizzotto, our beloved colleague, passed away at age 32. A short but exciting life, always marked by that constant smile, which showed his lust for life, even though he had lived in failing health since he was born. We would like to thank Sergio for being a dedicated, hard-working and honest employee, for always being ready to support all, for bravely fighting against death until the end.
