The City of Deer Park is proud to showcase the newly built Jimmy Burke Activity Center (JBAC) and the adjacent Ella and Friends Dog Park, located at 500 W 13th Street. Funded as a voter-backed initiative, this extensive project represents a significant investment in the city’s infrastructure and long-term quality of life. PORT HOUSTON: INVESTING IN COMMUNITIES TO STRENGTHEN THE REGION Supporting the communities surrounding the Houston Ship Channel helps strengthen the region’s future. Through the 2026 Community Grants Program, Port Houston awarded $500,000 to 32 organizations supporting education, workforce development, health care access, food assistance and neighborhood improvement across the Houston Ship Channel region.

Nearly half of this year’s grant funding will support workforce development programs that help students explore career paths, earn industryrecognized credentials and prepare for careers in the maritime, logistics and industrial sectors that drive the regional economy. The program received 194 applications requesting more than $6.6 million in funding, a testament to the continued need for funding of local projects.

Among this year’s recipients, La Porte ISD will use grant funding to expand its Elementary STEM Academies, providing students with unique learning experiences that foster critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving while introducing them to future career opportunities.

“This year’s applications made it clear that there is no shortage of organizations doing important work in our communities,” said Maria Aguirre, director of public affairs for Port Houston. “The need is significant, but so is the commitment of the nonprofits, schools and community partners working to address it. We’re proud to support these organizations and help expand the impact they’re making across the Houston Ship Channel area.”

Since launching the Community Grants Program in 2020, Port Houston has invested more than $2.65 million in local organizations. Beginning in 2027, the program will align with Port Houston’s Anchored in Action Community Investment Plan, helping ensure future investments continue to reflect priorities identified by residents in port-adjacent communities.

ASSOCIATED BUILDERS & CONTRACTORS GREATER HOUSTON In June, it was announced that Houston will serve as one of four pilot sites for America’s Workforce Academy (AWA), a partnership between Meta, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), and CBRE designed to launch careers in construction. Backed by a $115 million Meta investment, the program flips the traditional training model: participants receive a guaranteed job offer from a Meta contractor partner before completing training.

Over four weeks, candidates train at no cost with tuition, airfare, lodging, and a daily stipend covered.

Training covers safety, OSHA certification, construction math, and an introduction to core data center systems — electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fiber connectivity. Graduates earn the NCCER credential and an America’s Workforce Certificate, both portable across employers and industries; participants are under no obligation to stay with a Meta contractor partner.

The program is open to veterans and transitioning service members, career changers, and other new entrants to the trades from all educational backgrounds with no prior construction experience required. Applicants from all 50 states are eligible, with Meta covering travel for those selected.

CITY OF LA PORTE La Porte is on the move! Harris County Transit has extended Route 5, adding a new stop at the San Jacinto College Maritime Center. This improvement supports workforce accessibility, strengthens commuter connections, and enhances mobility for students and employees alike. Since 2008, EHCEC has evolved from a grassroots nonprofit into the region’s trusted convener, bringing together business, education, government, healthcare, philanthropy, and community organizations to strengthen economic opportunity and regional resilience. Together with our partners, we’ve helped mobilize more than $25 million in cash and in-kind investments and created pathways that have impacted more than 100,000 residents. HOUSTON WILDERNESS Tree planting and native grass installations in the Ship Channel by Houston Wilderness, Ana Tapia, Sr. Director of Environmental Projects Nature can overcome the most impossible of feats and with a little help can exceed expectations even in the industrial Ship Channel Corridor. Houston Wilderness- in partnership with Kinder Morgan (pictured above), Air Products, Sesco Cement, and many other industry leaders has successfully planted over 90k trees to help alleviate the byproducts of the Energy Corridor for its workers and the surrounding communities. We will be planting to 100k this Fall and hope to continue expanding our impact areas- if you have any green space that continually gets mowed and could benefit from a change in view and purpose- let us know how we can include your land for the Fall 2026 planting schedule.

SAN JACINTO COLLEGE TMC, San Jac partner to boost advanced therapeutics manufacturing pipeline. The Texas Medical Center (TMC), the world’s largest medical complex, and San Jacinto College, have a new partnership to boost the advanced therapeutics manufacturing talent pipeline in the greater Houston region. The collaboration will better align student pathways with the rapidly evolving needs of the life sciences and biomanufacturing sectors, which are aiming to modernize drug production, reduce shortages, and facilitate the reshoring of manufacturing. The agreement will help to design and implement initiatives that promote student recruitment, enrollment, and participation in the College’s bio and pharmaceutical manufacturing programs. SATTERFIELD & PONTIKES CONSTRUCTION OmniSource Ribbon Cutting: A major investment in the region’s industrial future is now online. Satterfield & Pontikes Construction (S&P) joined OmniSource, Steel Dynamics, and local leaders to celebrate the ribbon cutting of a new stateof-the-art metal recycling facility in Dayton, Texas—marking the project’s transition from construction to full operations.

Situated within the Gulf Inland Logistics Park, the 150,000-square-foot, rail-served campus is built for high-volume scrap processing and long-term growth along the Gulf Coast. The project includes multiple metal buildings, extensive concrete infrastructure, and a 500,000-pound shredder system that serves as the heart of the operation.

As OmniSource’s first major greenfield project in more than 20 years, the facility signals a significant commitment to the region. With planned expansion already on the horizon, the site is positioned not only to strengthen supply chains, but also to create

SATTERFIELD & PONTIKES CONSTRUCTION Ross Sterling Middle School Groundbreaking (Humble ISD): The future of education in Humble ISD is taking shape. Satterfield & Pontikes Construction (S&P) recently joined district leaders and community members to break ground on the new Ross Sterling Middle School—ushering in a modern campus designed for the next generation of learners.

Replacing an aging facility, the 215,820-squarefoot school will serve more than 1,300 students in grades 6–8 and is thoughtfully designed around student-centered learning. The campus will feature academic “neighborhoods,” flexible classrooms, and collaborative learning spaces that promote engagement, connection, and adaptability.

With dedicated areas for science, career and technical education, performing arts, athletics, and a technologyforward learning commons, the school reflects both the district’s educational vision and the community’s identity.

Slated for completion in August 2027, the project represents a long-term investment in students, families, and the future workforce of the region.

UNICORN SERVICES Unicorn Service Solutions Advances AI Permitting Innovation: Unicorn Service Solutions, a MWBE, HUB, and SBE-certified firm and the only local, womanrun company with two decades of hands-on permit management experience, drives economic growth in the Houston Port Region. The firm has volunteered extensively at local, state, and federal levels, partnering with the City of Houston and Harris County to modernize permitting and platting processes.

Exciting Announcement: We are honored to be considered and asked to submit a proposal to the federal government featuring its tested Unicorn Intelligence AI platform. Commissioner Adrian Garcia joined the board as the special guest speaker, sharing his insight and perspective on the region’s economic growth and infrastructure. Economic Alliance Houston Port Region President & CEO Chad Burke joined the Greater Houston Partnership’s Joint Committee Field Briefing at Port Houston, bringing together leaders from more than 40 organizations across the region. Chad presented “Port 101: A Strategic Economic Engine,” followed by insights on channel infrastructure from Lori Brownell, P.E., BC.NE, F.ASCE, freight mobility from Callie Barnes, and a firsthand tour of Bayport Terminal. The briefing highlighted the critical role of Port Houston and the Houston Port Region’s infrastructure, connectivity, and economic impact in powering regional growth and global commerce.

EHCMA GOLF TOURNAMENT

Michael Richter, CEO & President of Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston / Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF), gave Marisela Ramirez and Mandy Baucum a grand tour of CMEF’s multi-building facility. The visit provided an inside look at the organization’s training facilities, programs, and commitment to preparing the next generation of skilled workers. The Houston Port Region continues to be strengthened by the partnerships, workforce development, and industry connections that help drive our region’s growth.

The EHCMA Golf Tournament benefiting Dream It. Do It. Southeast Texas brings together industry leaders, workforce and educational partners, and organizations from across the region. President & CEO Economic Alliance Houston Port Region had the pleasure and privilege of speaking to the PEMEX Deer Park Leadership Team today at their Annual Away Day retreat. A beautiful theme of “Legacy” and culture based on the James Kerr book (check it out if you haven’t read it).

Economic Alliance Houston Port Region hosted a strategic U.S. energy discussion for more than 60 members and regional partners, moderated by Chad Burke and featuring Kyle Haustveit, P.E., Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy. The conversation focused on the Houston Port Region’s role in energy security, U.S. market positioning, geopolitical competition, and workforce development supporting national energy initiatives, followed by a tour of the LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology at San Jacinto College. The visit highlighted the region’s workforce training, innovation, and energy infrastructure and their importance to strengthening U.S. energy leadership.

They discussed how what happens at PEMEX Deer Park impacts and improves our community.

Through signature events like the Women’s Leadership Luncheon, we provide meaningful platforms to highlight exceptional women, share their stories, and celebrate their leadership. On April 29th, we hosted our first Women’s Leadership Luncheon of the year with a SOLD-OUT crowd! We were honored to be joined by Sunita Williams, American Astronaut and Retired U.S. Navy Officer, with our very own Karen Gregory serving as moderator.

It was truly an inspiring and unforgettable afternoon filled with meaningful conversations, powerful insights, and connections that will continue long after the luncheon. Sunita shared stories from her incredible career and journey into space, reminding us of the importance of perseverance, courage, leadership, and believing in yourself—even when the path ahead is uncertain. Her story resonated with everyone in the room and left us inspired to dream bigger, embrace challenges, and recognize the impact we can make in our own careers and communities.

Most importantly, the luncheon brought together women from across the Houston Port Region to connect, encourage one another, and celebrate the incredible leadership happening within our region. The energy in the room was a true reflection of what Women In Alliance is all about—creating opportunities for women to learn from one another, build relationships, and lift each other up.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this sold-out event such a tremendous success. This was just the beginning of an exciting year for Women In Alliance, and we can’t wait to see where these connections and conversations take us next!

The Business Growth Task Force mission is to provide mechanisms for the education and development of regional businesses to sustain and grow regional commerce for our communities.

The Committee meets monthly—on the first Wednesday of every month at 9 a.m. in the Economic Alliance Board Room. These gatherings offer an open and collaborative space for members to share updates, discuss ongoing projects, and celebrate recent successes. Each meeting also includes a “Member Highlight,” giving attendees the opportunity to learn more about one of our valued member companies.

In the 2nd quarter we heard from Enstructure, Energy Edge and No More Carbon. We also hosted our first Industrial Procurement forum of the year where we saw over 200 people in attendance.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TASK FORCE The second stop in the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region Economic Development Taskforce tours themed the “Process” provided a close-up view of a specific petrochemical operation in the Houston Port region.

Over 40 members of the taskforce received an overview and tour of LyondellBasell’s La Porte site. The group viewed firsthand how their operation produces chemicals used to create a variety of products impacting everyday life which include toys, retail carry-out bags, paints, coatings & adhesives, food packaging, wire & cable coatings, and automotive safety glass.

The LyondellBasell facility directly provides good paying/stable jobs and supports local schools and government services through their economic activity.
