Because of you, we did it! MANY EXPERIENCES, ONE SPIRIT: THE CAMPAIGN FOR ECKERD COLLEGE 2006–2011

BECAUSE OF YOU, WE DID IT! Many Experiences, One Spirit: The Campaign for Eckerd College is the most successful fundraising campaign in the College’s history. Its impact will reverberate for generations as the programs, facilities and people enriched by your contributions continue to deepen the Eckerd experience. This report only begins to demonstrate ways the Campaign has transformed Eckerd College, and we hope you will visit www.eckerd.edu/campaign to learn more about the people and programs behind our Campaign success. Thank you for your contributions, which surpassed our fundraising expectations, also inspiring a renewed sense of loyalty to the College and appreciation for the Eckerd experience. I hope you, too, are proud of what we have accomplished together.

DONALD R. EASTMAN III PRESIDENT

CHALLENGE CONQUERED! We did it, indeed! Never have I doubted the spirit of this special place. When we set a goal of $80 million to be raised over the course of five years, we knew it would be a challenge, even before the unanticipated financial crisis of 2008 and the world devastation of a tsunami, oil spill and earthquakes. Yet, the dedication of the Eckerd community prevailed. In fact, we outpaced our goal, reaching it a month early, and then surpassed it by $2.7 million! During the Campaign, nearly 11,000 trustees, alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, friends and organizations invested in the vision of an even better Eckerd College. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for making Eckerd students—our legacy and future— your philanthropic priority. With gratitude,

GROVER C. WRENN ’64 CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN

“Through my scholarship and Eckerd College’s community-conscious education, I have been encouraged and challenged to take a hands-on approach to building a better community for future generations.” —Stephanie Kyle ’11, Bevan Scholar, Biomolecular Sciences

CAMPAIGN GIVING BY PROJECT AREA The priorities of the Campaign were derived from the Campus Master Plan and 10-year Strategic Plan endorsed by the Board of Trustees in 2004.

AT THE END OF THE CAMPAIGN, ECKERD WAS PROUD TO HAVE: received $82,687,903 in gifts and pledges from 10,860 donors, 40% of them first-time donors; 195 donors join the Science Fellows, a recognition society for those who give $5,000 or more to the Center for Molecular and Life Sciences; increased membership by more than 100 in the Kadel Society, which honors donors who have included Eckerd College in their estate plans; worked with hundreds of trustee, alumnus/a, parent, ASPEC, faculty and staff volunteers to realize the goals of the Many Experiences, One Spirit Campaign; almost tripled the College’s endowment to $47.4 million and created 123 new endowed funds, nearly doubling the number of endowed scholarships and programs; collected more than $61 million in cash gifts to the Campaign, a remarkable 74% of all commitments; 231 donors (including 63 alumni) give—for the first time— gifts of $25,000 or more, largely inspired by the $25 million Collier Challenge, which matched gifts at this level; and doubled the number of endowed professorships with the addition of the Richard R. Hallin Professorship in Natural Sciences, Tom and Mary James Professorship in Finance, Peter Meinke Professorship in Creative Writing, Christian Nielsen Professorship in Film Studies and the Elie Wiesel Professorship in Humane Letters.

CAMPAIGN GIVING BY CONSTITUENCY

“In the same way we support our families for everything they have done for us, we contribute to Eckerd with a similar sense of gratitude and spirit of commitment.” —Robin Suarez ’85 and Curtis Arnold ’87

CAMPAIGN SUPPORT FOR ENDOWMENT Endowed programs and scholarships—funded with endowment earnings rather than operating funds—ensure students, faculty and staff benefit from donors’ generosity in perpetuity.

BECAUSE OF YOU… CAMPUS HAS NEVER LOOKED BETTER. New facilities and campus beautification build the foundation for a high-quality, modern liberal arts education. The Campaign’s largest project, the Center for Molecular and Life Sciences, will buttress the aspirations of Eckerd’s 272 science majors and 35 science faculty members. Renovated at the beginning of the Campaign, the Wireman Chapel has since hosted hundreds of events, meetings, weddings and services, including the installation of Eckerd’s chaplain and associate chaplain. Funded through the Campaign, GO Pavilion and the fitness center have enhanced the entertainment and physical activities of thousands, including campus visitors who marvel at GO’s canopy. The Pruitt Center for Ceramic Arts and Sculpture will reshape not only the Eckerd landscape but also the possibilities imagined by art students and faculty.

BECAUSE OF YOU… THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS HAVE SEEN THE WORLD. Eckerd seeks to enrich each student’s experience with service or study abroad. Half of the nearly 1,500 students who studied abroad from 2006–2011 received a scholarship to help fund their travel due to the generous $2.7 million in support from Campaign donors. Eckerd’s burgeoning Study Abroad Scholarship program inspired the 2011 launch of Passport: The Eckerd College Study and Service Abroad Scholarship Appreciation Dinner, which allows grateful scholarship recipients to share their globe-trotting stories with the donors who helped make it all possible.

BECAUSE OF YOU… ECKERD IS POISED FOR GREATNESS. A well-funded and astutely managed endowment strengthens the College’s financial position and attracts outstanding faculty and students as well as grant opportunities. By the completion of the Campaign, the College’s endowment nearly tripled, total cash and cash reserves reached $32.4 million, and the Annual Fund increased by 19%. The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Eckerd a $300,000 challenge grant toward the Christian Nielsen Professorship in Film Studies—one of five endowed professorships funded through the Campaign. The Collier Challenge helped generate 123 new endowed funds that will provide annual support for students, faculty and staff. LEARN MORE www.eckerd.edu/campaign

“Our opportunity is singular. How often are we put in a position immanent with greatness? How often are we given the privilege to complete a transformation of a college to its deserved recognition as the educational jewel of 21st-century liberal education? It can happen here.” —Miles Collier, Chairman of the Board of Trustees
