THIS IS WHERE THE IDEA OF ECIS BEGAN... Now, over 50 years later, ECIS members number more than 425 international and internationally-focused schools in 75 countries. We’ve come a long way since that first conversation in a Beirut cafe, and since then, we’ve seen continual growth to become a true collaborative made up of a dynamic community of educators, focused on empowering young people through international education. We’re excited about the future, and we’d love for you to be part of it. Be part of our unique community!

01

KEVIN J RUTH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ECIS

As much as we hear about the need for creativity and innovation in education in an incessantly dynamic and interconnected world, what action do we take to catalyse and make that a reality? It seems we’re waiting to be told how to do it, as if there were some road map to which we all should have access. A creativity toolkit, perhaps? Unfortunately, the standards-based movement looks at creativity and tries to codify it by writing a standard around it, then integrating that standard into individual “creative” learning opportunities. And while some parameters are arguably helpful, actual prescription is simply a continuation of how we’ve always “done school.” Continuing to do what we are currently doing – albeit somehow more brilliantly – is not likely to produce very different outcomes.    Truly enlightened thinking – and, importantly – action around international education is the task before us.   At ECIS, membership equals partnership, and we look forward to working for you and with you to accomplish that task.

INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS CERTIFICATION How well are you and your school recognising your place in the world, cognisant of your own context yet not bound by it? How do you work to create an internationally-minded culture that informs your school ethos as well as your own teaching and/or leadership? At ECIS, we believe that increased global understanding and engagement is an imperative in schools today, as we seek a better understanding of our world and an appreciation of each other, so that we create impact and opportunity for the current and subsequent generations. Enter the ECIS International Mindedness course. Designed to help you develop your own international mindedness and to influence the development of international mindedness in your school, this course takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, and culminates in an assessment aimed at helping you take stock of strengths and opportunities for growth, as you and your school move forward. A certificate is issued upon completion.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS Special interest groups are an active body of practitioners, contributing both to the professional development of other practitioners and to the international school sector as a whole. ECIS special interest groups (SIGs) are committees of up to six individuals from within our broad yet deep membership base, who are experts in their core areas, whether subject-specific or interdisciplinary in nature. Though the core committee is limited to six members, the larger special interest group on ECIS Connect has unlimited membership. Many of the SIGs run events throughout the year. With ECIS, the goal of special interest groups is to transform practice through professional learning opportunities that feature leading practice and are evidence-led. A further goal is, where appropriate, to create research and/or research opportunities around particular problems of practice. When you join ECIS, you’ll have access to Connect, our community platform, and it’s here that you’ll be able to connect with the Special Interest Groups that suit your professional development.
