Defining Green Principles

LIFE SKILLS: GREEN LIvING SKILLS

Page 2

INSTRUCTOR: As each competency is mastered, place your initials and the date in the blank on the left. This will verify that the student can perform the skill with a minimum of supervision.

Something that anyone can do to improve the Earth is plant a tree or shrub. A new tree or shrub can help to offset the loss of plants in your community, can add to the value of your property, and can improve the environment for wildlife. You can transplant a bare-root tree or shrub, or a tree or shrub grown in a container. Make sure you complete the job quickly to keep the roots of the plant from drying out. You can plant a tree almost any time of year, as long as the soil is not frozen. Early fall is the best time — the roots grow some during the first fall and winter; when spring arrives, the tree is ready to grow. A second choice for planting is late winter or early spring. Hot summer weather is hard on newly planted trees, and planting in frozen soil is hard to do and is tough on tree roots.

Hands-on activities (with evaluation criteria)

• Bare-root tree or shrub (usually packed in damp peat to keep roots from drying out) or container-grown tree or shrub • Shovel • Knife or pruning shears • Water • Starter fertilizer • Staking materials, if needed

Dig a hole at about twice the spread of the roots of the tree or shrub and deep enough so the plant will be at the original soil level.

NoTE: You can add topsoil or a soil mixture to bring the soil to the right level.

More and more, people are adopting green as a way of living and a way of doing business. But “green” involves more than just the way people interact with each other — it is also about the environment and the world in which we live. By learning about issues and concepts relating to sustainable living, you can make better buying decisions and lifestyle changes that help to protect the environment. Regardless of whether the changes you make are large or small, there’s no better time than the present to learn about going green.

WEb ACTIvITY:

Petroleum was used thousands of years ago in Ancient Egypt and the Middle East. In North America, Native Americans skimmed petroleum oil off the surface of lakes and streams and used it to waterproof their canoes and for medicine. Later, North American settlers eventually began using petroleum to replace whale oil in lamps when whale oil became too expensive. In 1859, oil was discovered in a water well in Pennsylvania. From this discovery, entrepreneurs figured out how to pump the oil to the surface and put it into barrels.

What You Will Need:

People often form their impression of you very quickly and that first impression is very hard to change. Because your appearance, your greeting, and your actions help create that impression, it is important that you approach interviews prepared. This requires looking your best, knowing as much as possible about the employer and the interview process, and feeling ready to present yourself in a positive, confident manner.

Once you have determined in general what you want from your work—such as money, prestige, self-satisfaction—knowing in particular what you want helps you match your personal interests to possible careers.

Finding the right job can be challenging because you must know where to look and how to apply. You must also prepare a resume and a letter of application. Once you have application forms, you must complete them and, if the employer requires, take an employment test. Practice preparing and completing these items will help you in a real employment situation.

✔ Note: Pudding is a very imprecise term, with considerable variation in cultural usage . In the United States, it is a synonym for a thickened dessert like a custard; in Great Britain, the term can mean any sweet dessert, though it sometimes denotes a savory dish that does not resemble a custard at all . However clear the meaning may seem to the reader, it is strongly advised to use the most precise terms and descriptions possible to avoid confusion . a . Custards • Egg-thickened puddings bound together by eggs, milk, and cream • Stirred custard is soft, rich, and creamy. Examples: Vanilla custard sauce, pastry cream, lemon curd • Baked custard is firm enough to slice. Examples: Crème brûlée, cheesecake, flan

Our Guarantee for Oklahoma Customers We think you’ll like our curriculum products, and it’s important to us that you are happy with your purchase. That’s because if you’re satisfied, you’ll be much more likely to try our other products! Why don’t we offer free previews? Yes, we realize that some of the commercial publishers offer you a preview copy. Unfortunately, because we’re a state agency, our budget does not allow us to do that. However, once you’ve purchased your curriculum, if you are not completely satisfied, we do want you to return it.

We want to offer our customers the most current, valid information available, so we update our materials periodically. Sorry, but we can’t take back the previous edition when a new edition becomes available. Of course, we do hope you’ll want to purchase the updates! Just like our commercial counterparts, all CIMC/ MAVCC materials are copyrighted. That means they can’t be copied unless it specifically says so on the material. We realize that by packaging some of our materials in a loose-leaf format they would be easy to photocopy, but please do not copy them and then return the originals to us. Please note that our return policy does not include CD and video products.

Our staff is pretty sure you won’t be disappointed, but if you are, we’ll provide a refund, credit or exchange. All you have to do is:

In the event these guidelines are not followed, materials will be returned to the customer at the customer’s expense.

• Make sure you return the product within 90 days, in its original form and in resalable condition. (That means no torn or bent pages, the pages are all in the correct order, and it’s been re-wrapped to make sure it stays intact on its way back to us.)

Questions? Contact our Customer Service staff at 800.654.4502.

• Make sure you include your shipping ticket or invoice number, so we can credit your account. • We’d love to know why you’re not happy. If you tell us why you’re returning the product, we can use that information to improve our products. • Send your returns to: C IMC/MAVCC Instructional Materials Warehouse O klahoma Department of Career & Technology Education 1201 N.
