Flickerfest returns to the Northern Rivers 15–16 May, with screenings at the newly refurbished Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah. Celebrating 30 years in 2021, Flickerfest, Australia’s largest and only Academy and BAFTA Qualifying Short Film Festival, presents the best in shorts over one big film-packed weekend showcasing its much awarded and applauded FlickerKids, Short Laughs Comedy, Best of Australian Shorts and Best of International Shorts programmes. The 40+ films screening in Murwillumbah are handpicked from Flickerfest’s 2700 entries; they include Academy® Nominees and award winners from across the world, hilarious comedies, moving and inspiring Australian shorts and award winning Northern Rivers filmmakers lighting up the big screen. The Regent is giving Northern Rivers’ audiences a final chance to catch these spectacular shorts in our region. Highlights from the Best of Australian Shorts include the fabulous intimate and moving drama This River shot in Lismore by locally grown director Naomi Fryer and awarded Best Direction at Flickerfest Bondi. This River stars Murwillumbah born-and-raised actress Madeleine Magee Carr. She was living in London when her mum saw the call-out for local Northern Rivers’ actors for the short film, so Madeleine auditioned virtually and the producers were so impressed they hired her on the spot to star in the film. This award winning short will screen alongside the beautiful Bama, shot locally and directed by emerging Indigenous filmmaker Jahvis Loveday, from Ocean Shores, who won the Jury Award for Best Short Film, and the audience award, at the recent Flickerfest Mullumbimby Byron All Shorts screening. Jahvis’s Nan and Great Nana lived in Murwillumbah and he forged a strong connection to the area growing up. His strong family connection is the inspiration for Bama and Jahvis will be at the screening to introduce his film and also to participate in a Q&A.
