Backlash Level two water restrictions remain in place for the Shire, say water utility Rous County Council, despite the recent heavy rains. A Rous spokesperson told The Echo that after meeting with the regional councils who draw water from Rocky Creek Dam (including Byron), a decision was made to keep the restrictions in place. Mullum is also at level two restrictions. No time for complacency! Q Q Q Q

An Echo reader from Talofa near Bangalow says hundreds of plastic tree guards have ended up on his rural property as a result of the recent flooding. They aren’t necessary for protecting saplings, he says, adding that the plastic debris could have reached the Richmond River and ocean. ‘I’m waiting on the RMS as to whether they are theirs,’ he said. Heard of the Currency (Restriction on the Use of Cash) Bill 2019? If not, it’s a bill written for the benefit of the financial sector and has a strong whiff of civil liberty erosion about it. If approved, it would force the public to use electronic transactions, or cheques, over cash for payments above $10,000 and impose two-year jail sentences and fines of up to $25,200 if they don’t. Thankfully the senate committee tasked with reporting on the bill has been extended till February 28. Parts of Byron Bay were flooded last Thursday after heavy rain drenched the region. Council say 283mm was recorded in Belongil, while 275mm was in the gauge at Cape Byron. Drainage problems also contributed to the flooding, and ‘Council will be investigating this as part of its review of the incident.’ How will a massive new West Byron suburb impact the Bay?
