Main Street Burger Bar are hosting a great community fundraiser this Thursday 8 August to provide clean water for communities in need around the world. There will be $5,000 in raffle prizes on offer along with a live DJ, local art and photo exhibition, and of course food, drinks, and good times, because the philosophy of the charity beneficiary (Waves for Water) is ‘doing what you love and helping along the way’. Waves For Water has a simple goal: get clean water to every person who needs it. Past community fundraisers through Waves For Water have helped ‘clean-water couriers’ travel to India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Africa, South America, Central America, Fiji, and Central Australia (as they say, can you believe that even in Australia we still have areas with limited access to clean safe drinking water?). They believe that ‘access to clean water is a fundamental human right’, and that they have dedicated their lives to providing it, through the implementation of portable water-filter systems, the digging/renovating of bore-hole wells, and the construction of rainwater harvesting/storing systems (in places where groundwater is not accessible). Since 2014, Australian travellers have helped to provide more than 500 water filters to over 30 countries, providing up to 50,000 people with access to clean water. According to the charity, ‘The global water crisis is solvable. The technology exists, along with the manpower to implement it. It just comes down to a choice: those who have access to clean water choosing to provide it for those who don’t.’ Entry to the event is $10 (includes two raffle tickets) and all proceeds go to Waves for Water, a registered charity. All donations are tax deductible. Thurs 8 August 7.30pm at Main St Burger Bar

I’m going to be honest – I hadn’t been to The Rocks at Aquarius before! But my uncle Charly has been raving about it for a while now, so I decided to give it a spin with my mum recently, and I have to say that I’m officially a big, big fan! The Rocks at Aquarius do some pretty epic lunch specials (the specials change daily), so you can always be sure of something new and tasty to try for just $15 with either a wine, beer, or soft drink. Our salmon was cooked perfectly (or as I like to call it medium rare), with crispy skin, and the béarnaise sauce was a masterstroke with the zucchini and bok choy, a rather delicate flavour profile that went beautifully with our glass of Sav Blanc! We also got stuck into two generous and succulent Duck Pancakes with all the usual trimmings for just $12. If you are looking for something super healthy, nourishing, and flavour jumping, I’d seriously recommend you get among the Green Bowl ($15.50) – it’s piled high with all the goodies you’d expect, and can easily be vegan if your heart so desires. Though, I’ve gotta say, I do think the perfectly sunny-side-up free-range egg perched on top looks rather sexy! If breakfast is more your thang, then you will be well fed and catered for with classics like Eggs Benedict for $19.50. Or dive into one of their daily breakfast specials; like my fav the bellylovely Huevos Ranchos with beans, pico do gallo, avocado cream, jalapeño salsa, and fried eggs on a tortilla – $15 with a coffee, juice, or tea, Si Senorita! Or the ever-popular Corn Fritters for $18.50, with poached eggs, tomato, rocket, grilled halloumi, and spicy tomato relish. If you’re a local then rejoice, my fabulous friends, because you simply just need to mention that you’re a local to your waiter and guess what?! You get 10 per cent off your bill, yep for real! Ah, and if you are looking to book a cocktail party or fab function with friends, these guys are starting to open in the evenings for private parties in the coming weeks! With various canapé options and even a barbecue menu too, give Patrick the manager a call for all the info! The Rocks is open for breakfast every day from 7 till 11.40am (coffee from 6.30am) and lunch from 12 noon till 2pm. Happy Hour is offered every day from 12 noon till 2pm! So you can enjoy your favourite alcoholic beverage with your bacon and eggs on toast, should you desire! The Rocks at Aquarius. 16 Lawson Street, Byron Bay. 6685 7663. Open 7 days a week 6.30am till 2pm. Follow the good vibes @aquarius_byronbay. Words and images by Terase Davidson: Terase is the founder of Taste Byron Bay.
