Heads up that the Broken Head Quarry, which has been the subject of years of court battles and court orders, has submitted a DA to change its use to a waste management facility. A concerned resident contacted The Echo to put the word out. The DA is expected to be publicly available for just two weeks from August 16, which seems unfair to all those neighbours who will be impacted. Deciphering complex engineering and environmental impact statements is no easy task for those without degrees and expertise in such areas. Perhaps councillors could look at extending the public submission times for big proposals such as this? QQQQ

Last week’s story on the historical shenanigans by Council and their decades old flooding (mis) management left out some of the webpage address. The full address is www.brunswickvalley.com.au/floodhistory/current_updates.htm. QQQQ

The destruction of an old, beautiful and enormous fig tree in Lennox Head (along with habitat loss) was a complete fiasco and was led by a majority of Ballina councillors, including mayor David Wright. Yet at least it raised questions over the rights of nature. A last minute effort for an Interim Heritage Order (IHO) was ignored, says Greens Member for Ballina Tamara Smith. She said the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) declined to recommend the IHO for the tree, as they needed Council’s support for it to proceed. Where insurance companies dictate government actions, common sense and justice clearly do not prevail. QQQQ

A new Byron Shire Unfolded map was launched at Crystal Castle on Tuesday. It’s designed to help visitors discover hidden gems and attractions across Byron Shire and is available at visitor centres and key attractions and businesses. Pictured are map designer Gaby Bogart, Brunswick Heads Visitor Centre Kristina Drapes, Cr Cate Coorey, Byron Visitor Centre’s Mick Webb, Cr Sarah Ndiaye and castle owners Tony Gilding (Macadamia Castle) and Naren King (Crystal Castle). The legal system, which is of course a cornerstone of democracy, can sometimes deliver good outcomes. Take last week, where a Californian jury awarded school groundsman Dewayne Johnson $289m for his terminal nonHodgkins lymphoma. The jury found, on all the scientific evidence presented, that his exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller caused his cancer. While Monsanto will likely appeal the decision, thousands of other Roundup victims are waiting to have their cases heard should the jury’s decision be upheld. Other countries have banned it and it’s being slowly phased out, but just not fast enough.

ning, yet that hasn’t stopped a panel with almost an 100 per cent approval record.

How will Ewingsdale Road cope with an additional hospital? This week a NSW government-appointed planning panel (JRPP) held a meeting and gave it a tick, despite a fairly flawed traffic report (see page 5). Building a large
