A Tasty Sunday of Fun! Story and photos by Terase Davidson

Sunday saw the Ballina Food & Wine Festival celebrate its ninth year of bringing the community together to enjoy a day of epic food, wine, beer and live music. This hugely popular local event is entirely run by volunteers from the Ballina Rotary Club, with lots of food-loving locals and plenty of local restaurant teams carving the festival day out in their diaries well in advance to get involved in the good times. Okay… so let’s talk about the food! Dave and I managed to hook into a mountain of food throughout the festival with some of the many highlights coming from the crew at Junk Yard Barbecue with their slow-cooked chicken wings. The wings, smothered lovingly with their housemade secret weapon sauce, are totally awesome on their own… or you can turn up the flavour volume as we did even more by adding a generous drizzle of El Gringo chilli sauce from the The Chile Banditos crew (these guys also do some beautifully balanced BUT nuclear chile sauces for those that are game enough to take it up several levels of mind altering heat!). And what better way to toast the end of a monster event than with a locally brewed Stone & Wood Pacific Ale paired with Oysters and Duck-Fat Fries from the oyster-obsessed team at Balcony Bar & Oyster Co, while watching the old-school guitar and Above: The Chile Banditos vocal talent of Diesel, closing the event in style holding festival Below left: oysters and chips goers in the palm of his musically gift hands.
