In regards to West Byron, I don’t have the skills or the right equipment, but if someone – or better still if many people – could film the traffic on Ewingsdale Road at peak traffic times and email it to every politician in both the upper and lower houses of parliament this would be a good counter to the bullshit being disseminated by the developers. Better still if the footage could be put on a DVD and posted to them all – as an email is easy to ignore. David Gilet Byron Bay

Q I received a letter from the NSW government Planning Panel about meetings to ‘hear submissions from the community’ on the West Byron development. This has been sprung on the community at short notice – making it difficult if not divisive for us to select representatives from the thousands who feel passionately that this development is a disaster for our environment and its inhabitants. Community representatives will get three minutes each for a total of ten minutes – well three isn’t a factor of ten for a start!

The applicant’s representatives are allocated 50 per cent more time to speak and presumably will be slick professional speakers. As I read it, this process is rigged against the community’s interests from the outset and is the antithesis of ‘community consultation’. I believe the only appropriate response to this sham would be a massive display of public disobedience. Alistair Bell Byron Bay

Holiday-let options

We have been reading with interest the debate on short

term holiday letting [STHL] going on in the Byron Shire and thought we would share what the situation is in our area. Margaret River is where we have lived for nearly 40 years and over the last four years we have been operating a STHL. When first applying for a STHL house we had to pay a $395 application fee then over a three-week period the shire notified the neighbours each side and adjoining to give them the opportunity to comment on our application. There are two categories: small house (sleeps six) or large house (sleeps up to twelve). Once the application period has finished and there are no objections (if there are you have a right of reply) you get approval for one year. Once that year has passed you go through the same process (another $395 fee) and if there are no issues then you are given permission for another three years. You are still required to address any issues that may arise. To be compliant you have to have a mobile phone number displayed at the front of the property, be available 24/7 to address any noise issues or complaints, display laminated copies inside the house of house rules, copy of house plan showing all exits, emergency phone numbers continued on page 12
