T

he surf has been phenomenal in the last two months and a cruise of the local coastline has delivered some awe inspiring waves and as we all know, big surf equals big crowds. Fortunately we have plenty of

top breaks to thin out the mob though having said that, one Saturday last month there were 340 surfers counted between the Pass and Clarks Beach. From aphotographic point of view this convergence of wave riders provided

for posterity, great archival media for future generations of surfing sociologists and humble surf rats. Snapping this society from the rocks day after day, you can observe surfer behaviour at its best, worst and at times, just plain suicidal. Surfers ‘short cut’ their way out at the Pass’s back

beach. Most, wisely, force their way out to the far right. Many of the others misjudge the passage. One afternoon five surfers made the frightening and unplanned adrenalin trip through the rocks. The best advice is to consider releasing your leg rope. Don’t exhaust yourself. Relax – if possible – your body, to minimise the brief rocky impact. Then

go with the flow and savour the experience. Photographically if you want outstanding images consider ditching the black wet suit for a decadent ensemble of vivid butterfly hues and a matching shiny radiant ultra glossy new shooter.
