Quicksilver State Junior Titles

for the premiers who had three players unavailable due to work commitments and one player not turning up so Mittchell Mc Grath had to play another full game. The premiers were also helped by a second division player in Ryan Harper. The game started at a hectic pace with the Rams side playing well and attacking Rovers on the counter attack. Bruce Morhaus up front was leading the attack with Jonathan Pierce out wide keeping Rovers danger man quiet. The defence held well with Rick Rasso and Sam Clark solid. Sam Owen, Todd Knaus and captain Shaun Packham marshalled the midfield well and Rovers who were expected to win found the going tough. Once again any thing that got passed the defence was saved by Kai Connell. The score was nil all at the break and thats how the game ended. Both these Rams teams who were under strength can be proud of their efforts and

John Campbell There were seven minutes left in a bad tempered game. Mullumbimby trailed 26-28 after Lower Clarence had engineered a try from what everybody but the ref saw as a classic shepherd. Needing the win to keep their finals chances alive, the Giants, like Johnny Cash’s shoeshine boy, were standing on the windy corner of a dirty street. A penalty was awarded to Mullum under the sticks. Would they take the two points or press for the try? The boys looked to coach Damon Scott for guidance. The boss took a nervous drag on his ciggie and opted for the bird-in-hand. Dane Chisolm slotted the goal, but 28-all was not going to cut it if the premiers were to have the opportunity to defend their title in the play-offs. It was a luminous late afternoon at Les Donnelly Field. The visitors, third on the ladder, arrived from Maclean with ominous form under their belt. But they are

a mercurial outfit, as likely to turn it on as implode. Chisolm took an AFL type mark from Troy Johnstone’s kick to score in the first minute and centre Glen Godbee went in shortly after to give the home side an early fillip. Against the trend, the Magpies’ lock strolled through flimsy defence to open his side’s account and stoke the embers. Fear and loathing then entered the fray, resulting in a spate of ugly incidents and sin bins – at one stage it was twelve Giants against ten. While the visitors pursued their reckless path of selfdestruction, Mullum took advantage of the open spaces and got Chisolm and Simon Baines over the stripe to make it 20-6. Lower had lost their rag and, presumably, the match. Thankfully, a donnybrook was averted, but only just. Lower at last pulled their heads in and played some footy. Mullum got scrappy but held a precarious 20-18

As perfect 1m conditions graced Boomerang Beach, four new state champions were crowned at the prestigious Quiksilver State Junior Titles with great results for two local surfers. The best juniors battled it out for state titles, and selection into the team that will represent NSW at the Australian Junior Titles at Margaret River in December. In the under 14 boys division it was event standout Soli Bailey from Byron Bay who took the prestigious state title. Displaying an array of skills beyond his years, Bailey took the crown over Michael Wright (Culburra, NSW), and a great third place to Tommy Boucaut Look at those legs! Great weekend for the Rams The Rams travelled to Lismore on Friday to take on Richmond Rovers who are leading the competition in both premier and premier reserve grades. Playing on Splendour weekend meant the Rams were short of playing staff and Garry Thompson and Lachlan Ray from the second division side played for the reserves. The young Ram side headed by Mitchell McGrath, Josh Mc Inereney and Oliver Bleakley were set to plan the demise of the Rovers side and with outstanding defence they kept the Rovers scoreless. Whenever they were beaten keeper Wissam Abdallah was there to save the team . In the second half Yantra Whitling rose above every one to head in the winner. The whole of the Rams young side stood tall last Friday night and heralded that they can be a threat to the competition. If times were hard for the reserves it was even harder

have two home games next week end. Hopefully with more players to chose from. The third division played a must win game to keep their semi finals chances alive against Murwillumbah and came away 3-1 winners. The Rams were ahead 1-0 at the break and raced away to a 3-0 margin before Murwillumbah scored a consolation goal. Best for the Rams were Mitchell Booth, Tony Coleman and Michael Dunne who had his supporters in the crowd. The second division side without three of its key players took on Richmond Rovers who were also on top of the competition. The Rams took the lead when Mitchell Booth from third division scored. A hotly disputed penalty made it 1-1 for Rovers then another penalty saw Rovers 2-1 up. The Rams kept fighting and we nearly scored on a few occasions. Rovers overpowered us towards the end and won 4-2.

Kyogle beats Bangalow at home Last weekend’s top of the table clash saw the Kyogle Cockatoo’s take out this year’s Minor Premiership with a 10 nil win over Bangalow at Don Gulley Oval. Starved of possession Bangalow were forced to constantly defend against a rampaging Kyogle forward pack. Unforced errors and poor support play also took its toll whilst a tiring tackle tally and a lop-sided penalty count effectively shut Bangalow out of the game. It was a harsh lesson in finals footy as Kyogle out muscled and out played a disjointed Bangalow who will now be forced to rethink and regroup before next weekends Major Semi-Final.

Nil all at half time Kyogle took the lead early into the second half with a successful shot at goal, following yet another infringement at breakdown by the ill-disciplined Bangalow. Pinned in their own twentytwo for much of the game Bangalow showed great heart to keep Kyogle at bay. Eventually though it wasn’t enough with Kyogle crossing the line mid-way through the second half through a strong forward drive. A successful conversion cemented the score at 10 nil while Bangalow were forced to finish the game with only 14 men after halfback Kerry Jennings was sent from the field following a professional foul.

lead at half-time. Full back Jy Hitchcox scored first after the break, but Lower replied for 26-24 before losing captain Don Walker for the duration after he thuggishly elbowed Andrew Moroney in the head. Mullum’s Aaron Cook and Lower’s Goliath prop were also marched for a later contretemps. Lower rallied, launching raid upon raid at the Giants’ line and raining fearful bombs on Hitchcox, who stood his ground and handled them manfully. Finally they got their questionable try and Mullum the equalising penalty. A deflating draw seemed certain, until Hitchcox sprinted away after working the old mousetrap at a play the ball. In the frantic passage of play that ensued, fiveeighth Jason Willis struggled over for the heart-stopping four pointer and the 34-28 victory. Geez it was good.
